Posted December 17, 20204 yr ag2i5vA3WEs Thought this might be a good discussion thread! Was the tv show your starting point? Have you tried to drag up yourself? (or play with gender expression another way? - don't answer if that's a personal question!) Maybe you had friends who did it, or came across it on social media, or just took a look from curiosity?
December 17, 20204 yr Lewis got me into it, he basically told me to watch it numerous times until I did. I already knew Adore Delano because her music came up on my Spotify but I genuinely had no idea she was a drag queen . I knew of Bianca Del Rio from Hurricane Bianca and ofc knew of some others very vaguely just from hearing songs by them bc of people on here (I particularly remember Alaska and Violet). I didn't think it would be my cup of tea, not because of the drag element but because I'm not big on reality/competition style shows so I thought I'd just give season six a shot mostly bc of Adore, I didn't think I'd last more than a couple of episodes tbh but omg I was hooked. Ended up watching other seasons afterwards ofc and now we're here  So thanks Lew xxx Edited December 17, 20204 yr by linds
December 17, 20204 yr I lived in Manchester in my early 20s and despite going up Canal Street a lot I never really embraced drag culture - to the point where I avoided Drag Queens on a night out. I gave Drag Race a go (through crappy YouTube videos) and got hooked! There was also a video with Willam, Courtney Act and Vicky Vox at an airport that I was transfixed by (why has Vicky Vox never done Drag Race?!)

I gave Drag Race a go (through crappy YouTube videos), partly as I wanted to educate myself and got hooked! December 17, 20204 yr Mine was the fact there was a UK Drag Race and it was showing on BBC iPlayer! I did watch the first episode of season 10 a couple years ago as people from my skating team were talking about Miss Vanjie, and I had seen the memes and was intrigued! I only started properly watching October last year thanks to the easy accessibility of the UK version and then started catching up with all the US seasons after that. I got through them very quickly!
December 17, 20204 yr I had some friends tell me in a PE lesson (because we’d all lost dodgeball) about how much I’d love the show because they know I was so into pop culture and music and started with Season 6 and was HOOKED
December 17, 20204 yr Author I actually quite randomly got into Drag Race, initially by going to a viewing party as a date. Oddly (now) I had always thought I wouldn't be interested in it - although I like live drag shows - but I kinda came to realise I think that was internalized homo/trans/femmephobia. In a way lockdown was a godsend to allow me to blitz through loads of seasons & use it as a kind of placeholder for the physical queer community. And now here I am actively making fan content! But it feels like a healthy evolution for me. Ironically enough, I actually saw the Christmas Queens live show before I knew who any of the queens were. It was very confusing! I guess it's probably also ironic that I had never heard of RuPaul before Drag Race and my entry point was Ru's archenemy Willam!
December 17, 20204 yr I watched season 6 as it aired, I think prior to that people had recommended it to me but I never got round to it and when a new series came around I finally did and the rest is history! I never really knew anything about drag then, I just thought of the Lily Savage kind of OTT panto drag queens but as soon as I got into the show I saw the artistry and flair and individuality that goes into it, and loved it instantly! Now I'm a fan of drag rather than of Drag Race, I adore Dragula too and would love to go to more local drag shows etc., I just love how there's so much variation in how a queen can express themselves or put on a show, drag can be ANYTHING whatsoever and the only limit is one's own mind.
December 17, 20204 yr It's floated around my general knowledge through memes and seeing Shangela on Dance Moms. I had watched like clips of it but I hadn't watched a season in full until S9 I think. And now it's added to one of my go-to reality shows :P
December 17, 20204 yr This will sound funny, but it was actually Charlie Hides who got me to watch RPDR  I was following him on YouTube and then saw that he was going to be on RPDR so I saw the episodes he was on and for whatever reason I stopped watching until I was reminded by Netflix that the show existed right when All Stars 4 started airing. I recognised Trinity, Valentina and Farrah from Season 9 and decided to watch it and I remember feeling so shook by their stunning looks, especially Trinity's, Manila's and Naomi's. Got hooked ever since.
December 23, 20204 yr I went through a hard time around Christmas 2018/early 2019 and was pretty down so decided to check out this show it felt like everyone went on about. I looked up the best season to start with and this article recommended 6, the rest was herstory xo
December 23, 20204 yr I guess it's probably also ironic that I had never heard of RuPaul before Drag Race and my entry point was Ru's archenemy Willam! Yes I was the same! I knew the name RuPaul because of the TV show and I didn't actually know that the show referred to drag queens at first  How things have changed!
