Biography

Halsey is the alias of New York-based pop singer Ashley Frangipane. The New Jersey native took her moniker from a New York L train subway stop, and her adopted city plays a large role in both the sound and lyrics of her dark, gritty electro-pop. In 2015, she debuted with Badlands, which hit number two on the Billboard 200 chart and sold well, earning early comparisons to Chvrches and Lorde. Continued success came in 2016, when her featured appearance on the Chainsmokers' "Closer" helped push the single to the top of the charts. In 2017, Halsey was back with Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, which topped the album chart and featured the Top Five hit "Bad at Love." At the end of 2018, she notched her first number one single as a lead artist, "Without Me," featuring an interpolation of Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River."

Based on the strength of her first single, "Ghost," she signed a deal with Capitol-owned electronic/dance label Astralwerks in early 2014. Her debut EP, Room 93, arrived in October of that same year. In 2015, Halsey released her debut full-length album, Badlands, which featured production from Lido, the Futuristics, Son Lux, and others. Included on the album were the singles "Ghost," "New Americana," "Colors," and "Castle," a version of which also appeared on the soundtrack to The Huntsman: Winter's War. Badlands debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart and sold well, ultimately achieving gold certification status. In January 2017, Halsey returned with the single "Not Afraid Anymore," which was featured on the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack.

Three months later, she released "Now or Never," the first single from her sophomore album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom. Featuring collaborations with Sia, Greg Kurstin, and Benny Blanco, the LP appeared in June 2017 and topped the Billboard 200. A remix of the LP's dark pop single "Alone," featuring Big Sean and Stefflon Don, arrived in March 2018. Later that year, she was featured on Blanco's solo single "Eastside" alongside singer Khalid. The track became a Hot 100 hit and added to her late-year boost: Halsey was featured in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies (voicing Wonder Woman) as well as A Star Is Born, then hit the top of the singles charts — for the first time as a lead artist — with "Without Me." She started 2019 with a series of high-profile collaborative singles including "11 Minutes" with Travis Barker and Yungblud, and "Boy with Luv" with K-pop superstars BTS. Promotion for her third full-length, Manic, started in earnest that spring. Singles "Nightmare" and "Graveyard" marked a darker, more introspective direction for the set, while third single "Without Me" became her first number one-charting single as main artist. The self-described blend of "angry dark music," was teased by a livestream in September 2019, before its release in January the following year. - Apple Music

Biography

There’s purpose in Dua Lipa’s euphoric pop. “For me, it’s about championing women and putting ourselves in the position of power,” the singer told Apple Music in 2020, ahead of the release of her second album, Future Nostalgia. “I have been inspired by the female alphas that have shown me that we can do it. And that we can wear the pants, you know? We need more of that in music.” Forcing the world to get a little more comfortable with female alphas has been a mission statement for Lipa (born in London to Kosovar Albanian parents in 1995) since her 2017 self-titled debut. It housed the triumphant breakup smash “New Rules”, the self-love anthem “IDGAF” and the assured “Hotter Than Hell”—songs which made it clear that this was no ingénue, but rather an outspoken, effortlessly cool face of pop’s future. Indeed, that status was cemented a year later when Lipa made history as the first female solo artist to receive five BRIT Award nominations. She won two and, in 2019, added two Grammys to her mantelpiece.

Despite the success of her debut, Lipa wasn’t interested in recreating its hits. “People always say, ‘The second album is really scary,’ but for me, it’s more scary to go back into the studio and try to create something like ‘New Rules’ or ‘IDGAF’ over and over again,” she said. “I feel like I’d end up in a vicious cycle of trying to get somewhere but never being able to mature as an artist.” And so, to move forward, she pivoted to the past, drawing on disco and funk—and filtering it through her ahead-of-its-time pop—to arrive at Future Nostalgia. Decadent and every bit as empowering as those early hits, it brought Lipa her first Mercury Prize nod, multiple Grammy nominations and a rightful place in pop’s upper echelons. And with it, too, came Lipa’s new purpose. Released just as the world went into lockdown amid the coronavirus crisis, Future Nostalgia became an urgent tonic for tough times—danced to in living rooms across the world. Yet Lipa wasn’t done there: Five months later, she unveiled Club Future Nostalgia, a thrilling remixed version on which the singer teamed up with club queen The Blessed Madonna, and guests including Madonna, Missy Elliott, Gwen Stefani and Mark Ronson, to bring lockdown-fatigued listeners another dose of escapism. “I didn’t think I’d be putting albums out during a global pandemic,” added Lipa. “But it’s just about creating experiences for everyone at home. That’s the most important thing for me now.”

All of this, of course, is only just the beginning. “I really feel like I’m finding my feet,” said Lipa. “I feel so proud of Future Nostalgia as a whole and the most confident and the most myself making it. But I’m already planning the next move.” - Apple Music

Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber

I Don't Care

170x0w.jpg

1st single from No.6 Collaborations Project

Released: 10th May 2019

Label: Warner Music UK / Def Jam Recordings

Four years after Ed Sheeran cowrote Justin Bieber’s breakup anthem “Love Yourself,” the pair have had a change of heart: On “I Don’t Care,” they serenade their significant others in head-over-heels fashion. Bieber sings lead on much of the song, with lyrics that seemingly touch on some of his very public struggles with depression: “With all these people all around I'm crippled with anxiety/I can deal with the bad nights/When I'm with my baby.” Nonetheless, the breezy beat, featuring rhythmic nods to dancehall à la Ed’s “Shape of You,” helps keeps the mood bright. Let the battle for song of the summer begin. - iTunes

Biography

Ed Sheeran

There’s a lovely moment a little ways into Apple Music’s Songwriter documentary about Ed Sheeran in which Sheeran, jet-lagged and carrying a cup of tea, straggles out into a yard in Malibu at dawn, sits down at his laptop and begins writing a song about the moment right in front of him: the crisp air, the birdsong, the hot tea, the day ahead. He gets a full verse in, melody and all, then pauses. “Songs are weird things,” he says. “How so?” an interviewer asks. “They just come and go,” Sheeran says, smiling. “And they never give you any warning.” For Sheeran, they seem to come pretty reliably. Born in 1991 in Halifax, England, he started out gigging on the UK pub circuit before releasing his first studio album, +, in 2011, and has since become one of the most unstoppable singer-songwriters in music, forging a light blend of folk, pop, hip-hop and dance that feels slick but lived-in, intimate but universal. Whether on his own (“Sing”, “The A Team”, “Shape of You”, “Perfect”) or in collaboration with artists from Taylor Swift to Eminem to Justin Bieber, Sheeran has a unique ability to strike a chord that feels both bittersweet and redemptive, good-natured and genuine: the hopeless romantic who convinces you he might just be right. In 2017, he was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, touching Prince Charles on the arm while shaking his hand—a breach of royal protocol, and an appealingly human one at that. - Apple Music

Justin Bieber

There’s a moment in a 2020 interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe where Justin Bieber begins—quietly, hesitantly—to cry. “It was hard for me being that young and being in the industry, and not knowing where to turn, and everyone telling me they love me, and just turning their back on you in a second,” Bieber says, each clause kicking up memories like dust. The point isn’t to weep with or for him—he had more dreams come true in his first 25 years than most people manage in a lifetime. But he’s also one of the few pop stars of his generation to have truly grown up in public, weathering the cable newsification of celebrity culture in the internet era while still trying to develop as both an artist and a person. Even early on, you could tell he had his eye on the future, balancing a doe-eyed wholesomeness with earnest attempts at hip-hop and R&B, material that suited him as a kid with material that reflected his growth into adolescence and adulthood. Some teen-pop singers end up trapped in amber; Justin Bieber has, knocks and all, kept swimming.

Born in London, Ontario, in 1994, Bieber was famously discovered when his future manager, Scooter Braun, stumbled on some performance videos that Bieber’s mom had uploaded to YouTube to share with family and friends. Braun, who understood not only Bieber’s appeal but the potential of the internet, encouraged him to keep making videos and keep the equipment cheap—an approach that not only helped Bieber’s growing fanbase to understand that he was still just a kid like them, but drafted a new blueprint for how artists could reach audiences in the digital era. With the exception of a voice change around 2011, 2009’s My World, 2010's My World 2.0 and 2012's Believe are more or less of a piece: the sound of a boy trying to stick the landing into puberty. Released in 2015, Purpose showed Bieber developing a more thoughtful connection to his material, including collaborations with vanguard pop producers like Diplo, Skrillex and benny blanco. After a five-year break during which Bieber underwent significant personal changes—including a detox from touring life, a diagnosis of Lyme disease and a epiphanic marriage to Hailey Baldwin—he came back with 2020’s Changes. “People have been putting me on a pedestal,” Bieber told Apple Music. ""I didn’t ask for that. Obviously I love making music, but there are a lot of people that love making music and they’re not in the position that I’m in. I’m just trying to steward that wisely, steward my relationship wisely. I want people to take a look at my story—hopefully, my words can make a difference.” - Apple Music

Biography

Nathan Dawe is fast-becoming one of the UK’s most talked-about new dance acts. Buoyed by a huge fan base in Birmingham and the Midlands, Nathan’s regional pull has seen him sell-out 3000-capacity headline shows in the city’s 02 Academy, as well as curate the first ever, one-day 0121 Fest in the summer of 2019. That pull is now starting to transmit nationwide, with Nathan’s single ‘Flowers’ ft. Birmingham rapper Jaykae – a fresh twist on the UK Garage classic — spending 11 weeks inside the UK Top 20, peaking at #12 earlier this summer. Nathan’s new single ‘Lighter’ ft. KSI went straight to #1 on iTunes on launch and the official video, which also features Window Kid, S-X and Lotto Boyz’s Ash, racked up over 3.5 million views in its first 48 hours – it’s already shaping up to be one of the records of 2020. Both singles follow Nathan’s first Atlantic Records singles ‘Cheatin’ and ‘Repeat After Me’ ft. Melissa Steel, both of which spotlighted his ability to write crisp, infectious dance music. - Spotify

Biography

Regard

The Kosovo-born Regard originally became known in the Balkans as a DJ and producer within the electronic dance scene before moving into the vocal deep house scene around 2016. Regard quickly made a name for himself with his online mixes, DJ appearances, and the release of his own tracks, including the singles "Dream," "Sun Goes Down," and "You're Mine." Although his reworking of Jay Sean's "Ride It" had been floating around since 2017, the track suddenly blew up after gaining exposure online, eventually going viral. The track was snapped up by Ministry of Sound, and the label officially released it in July 2019. It topped the charts in Mexico, the U.K., and Europe, and remixes followed by the likes of Jonas Blue and Franky Wah. Regard rounded out 2019 performing the track live with Jay Sean at London's O2. The song "Secrets" with RAYE arrived in April 2020 and cracked the Top Ten of the U.K. singles chart. - Apple Music

RAYE

Croydon, South London-based R&B singer Rachel Keen (aka RAYE) started her career at the age of ten, guided by her father and her guitar teacher. Her interest in music quickly led to small charity gigs and bouts of singing at her local church. By 2012, RAYE had enrolled in the prestigious BRIT school for music and singing, spending two years perfecting her craft, but she left in 2014 due to the limitations she was being taught and the desire to create her own rules. The following year, RAYE released her debut EP, Welcome to the Winter. The lead single, "Hotbox," was noticed by Olly Alexander (Years & Years) on Hype Machine; he got in touch with RAYE to discuss music, and arranged a meeting with the A&R department at Polydor.

With major-label backing, RAYE kept busy in 2016, including co-writing her single "I, U, US" alongside Charli XCX, appearing as a guest vocalist on Jonas Blue's "By Your Side" single, and releasing the SECOND EP. She was back working with Charli XCX the following year, guesting on the singer's tracks "Girls" and "Dreamer." RAYE also delivered her own single, "The Line." The singles "Check" (with Kojo Funds) and "Cigarette" (with Mabel and Stefflon Don) were released in 2018. The following year saw RAYE issue the emotionally charged single "Love Me Again." - Apple Music

Biography

Performing a distinct Atlanta trap style but hailing from the Pacific Northwest, rapper Lil Mosey made his breakthrough in late 2017 with the viral hit "Pull Up." With its trap bass, light melody, and a singsong delivery similar to Lil Yachty and Desiigner, the track notched millions of streams for the teenaged Seattle musician, who issued his first tape, NorthsBest, in 2017. Follow-up Certified Hitmaker featured Chris Brown, Gunna, and Trippie Redd, debuting on the album chart in 2019 at number 12.

Raised by his mother in the north side of the Emerald City, Lil Mosey started rapping in his early teens, inspired by Meek Mill's Dreams and Nightmares. He dropped out of high school to pursue a music career, heading down to Los Angeles to record. Mosey issued his early songs online, building a following with tracks "Off White" and "So Bad," which both appeared on his debut mixtape, 2017's self-released NorthsBest. "Pull Up" arrived at year's end and carried him into 2018, when he issued the follow-up single "Boof Pack" on Interscope Records.

As Lil Mosey's exposure grew, he joined national jaunts with the likes of SmokePurpp, Smooky Margiela, and Juice Wrld. "Pull Up" then appeared on Mosey's 2018 full-length Northsbest, an entirely different release than his previous mixtape. The album debuted inside of the Top 30 of the Billboard 200 and included the hit single "Noticed," which made Billboard's Hot 100, reached number 37 on the Hot R&B Songs chart, and went on to achieve platinum certification. The single "Bust Down Cartier" appeared in the spring of 2019, followed by "G Walk" featuring Chris Brown. The latter track landed on Mosey's sophomore effort, Certified Hitmaker, which arrived at the end of the year. Debuting on the Billboard 200 at number 12, the set also featured verses from Gunna and Trippie Redd. Mosey was quick to return in 2020, releasing a handful of collaborations like "Back at It" featuring Lil Baby and "Top Gone" with Lunay. - Apple Music
