January 21, 20214 yr It'll be interesting to see what the growing left/progressive base in his party push him on over the next four years — but this is a very good start. It's hard not to enjoy Biden undoing various things on day one. It's interesting how both main parties in America are divided really in viewpoints at the moment between two factions within them, although I would say the Republican party more so at the moment than the Democrats. January 21, 20214 yr Author So was Trump the symptom of the cause of US divisions? I think he can be both- the divisions have always existed, just look at the delicate coalition that the US is between its rural interior and its (mainly) urban coastal fringes, and he clearly benefited from focussing on these to take advantage of this in 2016. Probably these divisions have increased as a direct result of the post-GFC world since 2008, and we have seen new divisions develop since, as we have elsewhere in the world - the UK (*cough* Brexit *cough*) being a massive example: in 1983 Thatcher won a majority of 18-24s, in 2019 the gap between the voting intentions of the youngest and oldest generations in society has NEVER been wider. So he was definitely a symptom, and like Brexit a political outcome for these divisions to coalesce around, however he has exacerbated and widened these to the point of destruction. We will never know how close the US came to a civil war, but I'm betting it was an awful lot closer than any of us dare realise. Will these divisions continue beyond Trump's term, possibly- but I don't think it's inevitable that they will and Trump not being there gives us as good a shot as I'd hoped to change things.
January 21, 20214 yr I saw that Ted Cruz tweet, which would be hilarious if not for the unfortunate reality that his base will totally buy it. yay for Biden already rejoining it anyhow. I'm surprised he didn't try and persuade the Trumpistsd that it was entirely for the benefit of Paris Hilton.
January 21, 20214 yr Apparently Trump told daughter Ivanka that if she dared to attend the inauguration he'd cut her, Jared and all their 5 children out of his will and they'd get nothing when he dies. She's had some money but stands to get a lot more. He pointed out that families, "the blood" stick together. She knew he meant it they were saying today on Sky News. I agree with him, family loyalty must always come first. She'd have stuck out like a sore thumb there. Edited January 21, 20214 yr by common sense

January 22, 20214 yr Well she wouldn’t have if her father had had the decency to show up himself. He didn't go because he honestly and truly believes the election was stolen from him. Would you have gone if you truly believed that and thought Biden shouldn't have been sworn in? I wouldn't have either. People have principles. I know a man along our street, a black cabbie, who's wife says was in tears yesterday and couldn't bear to watch any news. He firmly believes it was stolen too. I am not sure if Trump does truly believe it was stolen. And yes the news is upsetting at the moment - surely though because of the grim Covid figures much more than anything to do with US politics, no matter who you supported in the US election. I wonder can the man along your street bear to watch the news any day recently if he gets that upset about Trump leaving office?
January 22, 20214 yr Can the man along your street bear to watch the news any day recently if he gets that upset about Trump leaving office? He didn't watch yesterday because of Biden being inaugurated. Trump losing has really affected him it seems. :( I watched it as I always watch them. Edited January 22, 20214 yr by common sense
January 22, 20214 yr chris, do u believe the election was stolen? also you do understand that Trump was hungry for power and he chose to believe that the election was stolen because he couldn't handle that 'sleepy' joe beat him and turned two red states blue (hence his childish behavior). The fact that Pence attended inauguration and ignoring Trump should teach all of you to accept the reality and move on. He is dangerous and I hope and pray to energy that he ends up in prison for all the crimes he did and lastly for inciting insurrection. I hope and pray no person like him ever runs for president but I think that's a lot to ask considering he legit ignited the idea that any megalomaniac such as himself can run for president.
January 22, 20214 yr He didn't watch yesterday because of Biden being inaugurated. OK I can understand its a sad time for Trump supporters, I do have some sympathy for them, and watching the news yesterday, I did have some sympathy for Trump's family who were at his at his final speech as President at what must have been a rather sad occasion for them. I was a bit harsh in my previous post: I am sure the man down the street is probably already as upset by the Covid pandemic as most people and being a Trump supporter yesterday just added to his upset on top of this. January 22, 20214 yr and btw how someone living in UK is getting effected by Trump loss so much that he couldn't bear watching news yesterday? Serious question. Personally this morning, my walk felt so much better, lighter and brighter and anxious-less just knowing the fact that someone with orange face make up is not president anymore. It was a rough four years for majority of us who lived through his presidency!!!

No I don't honestly think it was stolen now. I have accepted reality and moved on. I can't speak for my neighbour though, who I know truly believes it was stolen by the Democrats. I know it doesn't affect him here, but he says it's the injustice that's eating him up inside. Bit over the top for someone who's not American. He's Irish actually. Edited January 22, 20214 yr by common sense

January 22, 20214 yr I don't know. He's got no work now though as a black cabbie as no-one is about to want a taxi so maybe it's that too. Yeah there's a multitude of issues about at the moment that can affect people's mood negatively, including the pandemic, so we shouldn't judge him.
January 22, 20214 yr BTW did anybody else see Bill Clinton nodding off yesterday during Joe's speech. ? He managed to get 40 winks but the TV cameras picked it up and it went viral.
January 22, 20214 yr On real consequences to people actually still involved in American politics, I'm interested to see that some Senate Democrats have officially filed an ethics complaint into Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz' actions surrounding the attempted Capitol insurrection. Still of the view that they should be expelled for this, them and perhaps some members of Congress if those are also found guilty. Make an example out of them. (did like the AOC fireback against Cruz showing up his useless politician schtick re the Paris agreement though)

That’s why we love to see it not working.
