You wouldn't be able to, they were credited as 'Spice Girls' as writers on the first two albums. My Strongest Suit isn't written by the Spice Girls, it's written by Tim Rice for the musical Aida.

That explains why the Geri haters always say she never wrote the songs, as they are just credited as one big group.

The comments regarding Emma's vocals huh!? She sounds sublime on the song, and she aced it live at The Royal Albert Hall!

Geri is my least favourite Spice Girl now but anyone who claims she never wrote the songs is quite frankly deluded, she very obviously played a huge part in the lyrics for sure, when you look at her solo discography there is obvious flairs of Geri in the lyrics mixed with the other girls styles.

That is exactly what I tell them, but there are some vocal and deluded Geri fans out there who claim her music sounds nothing like Spice Girls', and that Mel B wrote everything  I'm surprised you haven't come across them.

I think we’re lying to ourselves if we say that Emma Bunton had any influence of the popular 60s style from 2007/8. That was clearly kicked off with Rehab and I can’t see Amy sitting down listening to Free Me and getting inspired.

I also very much doubt that Emma specifically influenced artists a few years later with the 60s sounds, but she was certainly ahead of the curve! Her music stood out at a time when pop music was quite electro. Free Me the album received a lot of great reviews at the time, they were complimentary about her musical direction.

Funnily enough, Emma Bunton and Amy Winehouse were both associated with Simon Fuller and his 19 company in 2002/3, so they might have crossed paths at that point.

Emma Bunton is the only solo Spice that I bought absolutely nothing of. Not even so much as a £1.99 CD single!

So I didn't buy What I Am but within months I thought that buying Geri's Bag It Up was a good idea. WTF was I thinking?

obvs Emma didn't influence Amy, which was retro but also very jazz

Amy was jazz with a retro vibe added

but what Duffy did, to me it sounds very much like Emma's Maybe

and it's kinda sad that no one bought >Emma's album cos of the Spices fatigue but millions bought Rockferry

but I guess rather than influencing them, she just happened to do it first

I really disagree, I can’t see Emma singing any of the songs on Rockferry nor can I see Duffy singing Maybe. They may have been inspired by similar influences but I really don’t think Rockferry was modelled on that song. It’s a proper reach.
It's about what started the trend, I don't think you could argue that music from the 90s/very early 00s is specifically what kickstarted the 60s-influence takeover in 2007/8. Also, Gabrielle's music might be soulful but I don't think it's got a particularly 60s vibe in the way some of Emma's music definitely did. I still stand by that it was Amy Winehouse who really started the trend (it was clearly an authentic genre for Amy, she didn't start doing it because Emma was, lol) but it is interesting that Emma was making this sort of music just ahead of the trend.

lol, exactly. Amy started the trend, nobody was inspired by a former Spice Girl doing some bossa nova. Hell, Amy even toyed with it on Frank, it's just that with Back to Black she went full-out with the 60s aesthetics to accompany the music.

Agreed. Rockferry was more northern soul anyway.

Maybe is still a tune. I don’t think it would have done any better chart wise if released a few years later, just unfortunate sales were so poor when it did come out.

This thread/top ten did make me revisit her singles. Had completely forgotten take my breath away and crickets sing for anamaria. Both very nice pop songs.

Had it been released a few years later then it likely wouldn't have gotten playlisted at all. While the Spice Girl fatigue had hit the general public, radio were actually still playing Mel C, Geri and Emma. The complete blacklisting of them on radio didn't seem to hit until 2005-ish (though Downtown did get playlisted in 2006 because it was for a Children In Need; the follow up All I Need To Know was shunned).
