February 2, 20214 yr I'd be up for any of those really! (possibly not 90s R'n'B, sorry for being generic x), is there a reason is has to be those certain years for dance? I think there were 3 dance ‘eras’ in the 90s, with their own sounds.
February 2, 20214 yr I think there were 3 dance ‘eras’ in the 90s, with their own sounds. Which ones? I was thinking euro-once at the end of the 80s/early 90s with Black Box, Snap, Technotronic, Haddaway, 2 Unlimited, Culture Beat and then at the end of 96 there was this sort of dance-indie music with Prodigy, Underworld, Faithless, Chemical Brothers...
February 2, 20214 yr Author There's definitely the later 80s/early 90s underground, house and rave inspired stuff. I'd say there was then a period where it became heavily influenced by eurodance from about 1993 and then in the later part of the decade it gradually became more indie, garage and trance focussed. That's from a chart point of view anyway, obviously there would have been early pioneers for all those sounds before they became more mainstream. We haven't compared notes though so that may not be how Jester sees it...

I would agree - underground, acid, rave in early 90s, house, indie or euro influenced in mid 90s and then trance in the late 90s. This is rather broad, but I do see 3 eras for 90s dance.
February 2, 20214 yr there was sure acid/rave in the early 90s ie The Shamen, Oceanic ;) but also eurodance, which was far more dominant in the charts
February 3, 20214 yr To this day I have still only sent one song from earlier than 2005 to BJSC so this will be a good way to get me to find more retro songs for song contests :magic:
February 4, 20214 yr Looks like 80s synths will be the first contest. Excited. And the new romantics and 80s cheese categories sort of fit in to it too so there is some overlap there.
September 12, 20222 yr What happened to this then? Did it get forgotten about? We've had a 70s/80s Club Bizarre and a retro PFSC since this idea came up which both went well so I think this is still something that people will be interested in. I don't mind hosting the first contest (80s synths was the poll winner). I can start it this week if you want as the next BJSC has been delayed.
September 12, 20222 yr OK, I will. :) Regarding vetos, I would suggest that we exclude top 10 singles and anything else that would be regarded as being too well known. Also, will it be called the Retro Song Contest or did the mods like any of the suggestions that were posted in this thread?
September 12, 20222 yr I think the 2 suggestions I like are: Now That's What I Call a Song Contest Back Trax To The Future Happy for my fellow mods to pick though :D
September 12, 20222 yr mine songs that haven't been top 20 otherwise it will be Take on Me vs Tainted Love
September 12, 20222 yr uhsting says he secretly loves retro music and he can’t wait to get involved in this contest! ;)
September 12, 20222 yr How did I miss this? This is so right up my street that it's got the same post code as I do. Edited September 12, 20222 yr by Colm
September 12, 20222 yr Could it be a possibility to combine a couple of genres ideas into one contest so as not to be strictly one style like we did a while ago for CB incorporating Jungle, Drum & Bass and Garage all into one contest? I’ll understand if one’s oppose but 80’s synths isn’t my strongest option. Maybe 80’s synths and electronica? Or 80’s cheese and novelty to combine another option listed in the poll?
