With a guitar solo contributed by Eddie Van Halen, this was the third single to be released from the Thriller album giving Michael Jackson his 12th top 10 single in the UK while in the US, it reached number 1 and won the award for Record Of The Year at the 1984 Grammys.

I like most of the Thriller album, but Beat It never really clicked with me, not sure why. I'd have preferred Don't Stop Til You Get Enough here.

Anyway, that's all the songs I gave less than 5 points to in this final now out, and somehow, despite giving one each of 0.5 to 4.5, I've escaped the bottom 3 for any of them!

21. Heart - Alone

Average score - 6.887 (more 11s)

Writers - Billy Steinberg, Tom Kelly

Top scores : 11 - Bjork, Mango, 10 - George.keh, StoneDragon, JackJones, Ansel

Low scores : 1 - jszmiles, JulianT, 2 - Shaky1981, RabbitFurCoat

It's that Billy Steinberg again. We've already seen him as co-writer of Like A Virgin and One & One. The original version of Alone was recorded by him and Tom Kelly under the name i-Ten in 1983. Heart's cover was their only top 5 hit with two further singles reaching number 8. Heart were formed way back in 1967 and they are still going.

Great to Smalltown Boy do well . A song I’ve only come to appreciate recently after its use in Pride, but loved Jimmy’s voice in The Communards
'Alone' has absolutely no business being anywhere close to this high.
'Alone' has absolutely no business being anywhere close to this high.

It has every business being this high, what with it being the ULTIMATE power ballad. I might even go so far as to declare it my favourite song of the 80s

'Beat It' is an absolute classic too, easily ranks as one of MJ's best, would have liked to see that in the top 20.

20. Giorgio Moroder with Philip Oakey - Together In Electric Dreams

Average score - 6.925

Writers - Philip Oakey, Giorgio Moroder

Top scores : 10 - Jester, Chez Wombat, Jade, Nick F1, dandy*, Tawdry Hepburn, RabbitFurCoat, JulianT, Campbell, Bré

Low scores : 0 - Adelita, 1 - jszmiles, 2 - Shoat, Scene

The film 'Electric Dreams' was directed by Steve Barron who also directed the video for Don't You Want Me by the Human League in 1981 so as he already knew Phil Oakey, he suggested him for this song. The film was a bit of a flop so the song became a lot more well known than the film itself. I actually bought the soundtrack album as there were two new Jeff Lynne songs on there. I finally got around the watching the movie on youtube a few years ago.

Neneh Cherry makes her second appearance here with the Senegalese singer who had one previous minor hit single with Peter Gabriel. The song is sung in French, English and the West African language Wolof. It spent sixteen weeks at number 1 in France which at that time was a record.

And now Madonna makes her second and final appearance. Material Girl was the follow-up single to her other finalist, Like A Virgin.

Together in Electric Dreams is absolutely beautiful, one of the best examples of 80s synthpop  Yes, I have Peter Pan Syndrome and I'm proud :yahoo:
Together in Electric Dreams is sooo beautiful. That’s the first time I’ve appeared on the positive side of the featured scores oops!
Another three fantastic songs there. Always loved '7 Seconds' and 'Together In Electric Dreams', and 'Material Girl' is definitely one of Madonna's best of the 80s and with that iconic video too!

'Together In Electric Dreams' defying Adelita to a top 20 finish  14 year olds unite. Love '7 Seconds' as well!

Into the top 20 and we still haven't even reached an average of 7 yet though...!

17. Anastacia - Left Outside Alone

Average score - 6.962

Writers -Anastacia, Dallas Austin, Glen Ballard

Top scores : 11 - Adelita, 10 - Jade, Shoat, Nick F1, Alex!, Tawdry Hepburn, detonate, Simon, Scene, JackJones

Low scores : -1 - RabbitFurCoat, 0.5 - Jason, King Rollo

From 2004, this was Anastacia's ninth top 40 hit and still her best chart placing.

Last year the first song to get a score of more than 7 in the final was 34th, so even if we allow for there being half the songs in the final to distribute scores this year, that's the equivalent of Left Outside Alone in 17th here - so I guess Bre's right, we are a stingy bunch this year
