In the last two months the SPD has risen 10% in the polls!!!! Up 12% compared to the one in the OP. Postal ballots have been sent out already and people are voting (a friend of mine has already sent back his postal ballot)

The CDU have tried to Land some attacks about governing with Die Linke but doesn’t seem to be cutting through so well. (Think Cameron’s coalition of chaos narrative but less successful given an SPD-Grüne-Die Linke coalition runs the capital and the city state of Bremen without issue)

As Long as the AfD Are demoted from their status as opposition then that’s all that matters to me

That and not letting the greens put a speed limit on the autobahn

  • 4 weeks later...
Wonder if the Greens will do well considering the summer Germany has had with extreme weather?!

What time do the polls close tomorrow?

Not sure if it’s the same in every state but polls close locally at 6pm and there’s a looooooot to count. There was Federal, State, Local and a Referendum to vote for here this time round. Busy week of counting that mess

If something gets enough signatures, you can force a non-binding referendum on anything. This one is about appropriating the Berlin assets of the cities largest private landlord and returning the properties to state ownership to be social housing. Rent is a particularly touchy topic here as it’s been rising at astronomical rates lately. It’s only Berlin that has this particular referendum and a bunch of the parties have already said they’ll ignore the results.

Other ones have happened on keeping Tegel open (ignored) and not building houses on the grounds of the former Templehof airport that is now a park (respected, for now)

That's one of the advantages of Sunday elections. There's no need to keep polling stations open as late as 22:00. I assume there will be exit polls, so we should have some idea what's happened early this evening. Of course, it might take a while longer before we know who the new Chancellor will be!

Is it all done with good, old-fashioned pencil and paper?

It also helps that federal law prevents most of the country from working on a Sunday! I think an exit poll is expected at 21h but I can’t exactly remember. And yes, it’s good old paper and pencil!!!

Germanys equivalent of BBC World News, DW, has an explainer thread on understanding how Germans will discuss what happens next.

Personally I am rooting for a Traffic Light coalition. I had written off the FDP as being a bit Tory but they are like major hard on for capitalism in a way that is remarkably pro migrant. I’m backing traffic light because the parties want to allow dual nationality and speed up the time you need to be resident in order to become a citizen

They sound like one of those right wing liberal parties that voted for brexit as the Eu allegedly restricts things then are gutted when there’s no lorry drivers!

The referendum sounds like a good idea but if it’s not legally binding there’s no point!

...they are in the same Europarty as famed Eurosceptics such as the Liberal Democrats and La République En Marche.

So Merkel is still very popular but her party has declined in popularity? A bit strange but I guess voters think the post-Merkel CDU wont be as good.
Omg I just heard that Angela got beat and has had to stand down!!! She id an excellent politician, but if we can get anothrr European socialist government in, then, well...
I see the CDU leaders vote was nearly disqualified because he posted it the wrong way 😂

Are the German Liberals not pretty right wing? Heard they hate the Greens for example!

Yeah but that doesn’t make you right wing. I hate the greens and I’m very firmly left of centre.
