I know Good 4 U is more pop with guitars but with that and Zitti E Buoni suddenly exploding, I do wonder if a rock revival in the singles chart is just around the corner?

 

Let's hope it's not a fluke because honestly I'm looking forward for pop punk rock oriented music comeback on 2020s mainstream music oops.

Could be partly a reaction to Covid, the roaring 20s 2.0 could be about to happen and rock music could definitely be at the forefront of a movement like that.

 

The (chart) music of much of the 2010s felt so sterile in comparison to previous decades and I feel there was always going to be a backlash against more generic stuff. Gen Z are definitely at the forefront of all this, you can see even in the variety of music used on TikTok vids.

 

I’m sure a million think pieces on all this can’t be far away...

Its the 2nd biggest non-Xmas song day ever yeah, even higher than Castle on the Hill's debut!

I’d prefer Eurovision songs being hits on their own merits but if we have to get TikTok involved I suppose its better than them being completely ignored after two days.
A hit on their own merit would be great but im all for anything that helps as outside the Eurovision night itself the song get little to to promo unless picked up by social media of some kind.
I have warmed to TikTok as a hit generator a lot more since actually downloading it and understanding it more (after feeling like I was too old for it for a while, but hey, I'm still part of Gen Z :kink:) - I am all here for it helping the chart to be more interesting!
I'd say that a song blowing up on TikTok is well within the scope of 'on its own merits', there is obviously at least some degree of astroturfing going on there (I don't think there will ever be a platform for songs to blow up that isn't also subject to payola etc.) but the songs do still need to be connecting for people to a) proliferate the trends and b) go out of their way to seek the full songs based on the short clips that go viral. TikTok is just an integral part of culture now and is only going to become more and more influential over time, I don't think we should dismiss songs as 'just being TikTok hits' as if that's any less valid than hits that don't come via TikTok.

Thought that was going to happen when 5 Seconds of Summer - She Looks So Perfect went to #1 but it didn't sadly :(. There was also the brilliant Angel - Wonderful which was an R&B song with an electric guitar in it, thought it might have created a new trend but it didn't sadly :(

Pop punk is definitely becoming an increasingly trendy sound right now though (just look at everyone and their dog clambering to make a song with Travis Barker), Machine Gun Kelly's 'my ex's best friend' has been another fairly big hit from this current revival (more in the US than the UK admittedly) but now there is a full on huge hit from it I can definitely see it becoming a lot more prominent in the charts pretty soon.
we just need Arctic Monkeys to make a comeback!

I know they've always been popular, but it seems like they've made a bit of a comeback recently with their past hits.

I made a comment in Gezza's countdown thread that the album bomb impact of Ed Sheeran's '÷' hadn't really been matched since - unless I am forgetting something obvious this Olivia album seems to be the closest we have had since that? It definitely looks like her songs are going nowhere any time soon! (Obviously there have been other albums that did similarly on their first day but Ed's album was unique in managing to maintain absolute dominance for weeks with many songs if anything only climbing)

To answer this indirectly, and as far as I know, these are the only times the streaming 'sales' for an album have exceeded 30k in a week - all while at #1 unless stated:

Olivia looks certain to join this list anyway - I'd say somewhere around 45k is possible, maybe even 50k depending what happens with streams later in the week which (as per the above) has not been done since the first 2 weeks of ÷
