It just blows my mind that in 1999 a sale of 109,000 could *only* get you #1 in 11 weeks of the year, so the other 41 weeks the #1 sold *more* than 109k. An amazing sales climate for sure.

 

Impressive as they are you have to remember the % decrease was generally quite large while nowadays a song will have sold that much combined by their peak sales week.

95. BARBRA STREISAND- Duck Sauce (66,964) #3

For some reason I’d completely forgotten that Duck Sauce contained a certain Armand Van Helden, but back in 2010 “Barbra Streisand” became a smash hit sampling the Boney M track “Gotta Go Home”. It was the last we heard of the collaboration between Helden and A-Track though they still produce the odd track.

 

94.BILLIONAIRE- Travie McCoy Featuring Bruno Mars (67,000) #3

 

 

No 1 in 12 weeks in 2010

 

On a hiatus from Gym Class Heroes, and post Katy Perry, Travie hit it big with this track co-written and co-produced by Bruno Mars. The inspiration for the song apparently linked to a visit to the UK where Mars’ record label gave him £240 to spend over 11 days in London- hard times.

 

93. LET THE SUN SHINE- Labrinth (67,868) #3

 

 

No 1 for 12 weeks in 2010

 

Becoming Simon Cowell’s first non talent show signing in 6 years, Labrinth arrived on the pop scene in tandem with Tinie Tempah on “Pass Out” and “Frisky” but later in that year Labrinth branched out on his own with this track. In entering at No 3 it saw the rapper stall behind his old collaborator Tinie and of course Bruno Mars who was never far from the top in 2010.

 

Assume you just meant the last we saw Duck Sauce in the top 40, they are very much still going, they dropped quite a few new songs last year. 'Mesmerize' was a banger in particular x

 

'Barbra Streisand' is a classic anyhow, I remember both that and 'Just The Way You Are' being used on X Factor in the same week when both were #1 contenders (and when being used on X Factor was actually significant chartwise), shame they couldn't quite make it to the top.

 

'Let The Sun Shine' was decent but a weird choice for Labrinth's lead single, luckily he went away for a year after that and came back with a far better song.

Loved ‘Let the Sun shine’ although it was far gentler than ‘Earthquake’. ‘Billionaire’ was hideous though. Don’t think Duck Sauce added much to the Boney M original tbh.

92.TOUCH ME (I WANT YOUR BODY)- Sam Fox (68,000) #3

 

 

No 1 in 12 weeks in 1986

 

Believe it or not a top 5 hit in the US as well as over here, this was the page 3 beauty’s first single in early 1986. Filled with enough innuendo and sexual imagery to satisfy her initial fanbase (young males) it was rewarded with high sales and successfully transferred her from the Sun to the charts.

 

91. DNA- Little Mix (72,044) #3

 

 

No 1 in 12 weeks in 2012

 

A spot of early Little Mix now, their third single in fact but their first to fail to hit the top but given those sales it would have been enough in 12 weeks of the year. The promo takes its lead from the film “Sin City” and looked like it could have made the top lagging only slightly behind Bruno Mars (again- what is it with him) but was outstripped eventually by Mars and 1D.

 

90.WITH UR LOVE- Cher Lloyd Ft Mike Posner (74,730) #4

 

 

No 1 in 12 weeks in 2011

 

Fresh from her stint on X Factor Lloyd scored a No 1 with “Swagger Jagger” in the summer of 2011 courting a fair amount of negative press, during her X factor “journey” she’d performed “Cooler Than me” so it was perhaps appropriate that se rope in Mike Posner for her follow up “With UR love”. The Song debuted at No 4 but sold more than her No 1 single did in its first week, them’s the breaks.

 

I think 'DNA' is still my favourite Little Mix song :wub: it has a similar dark, electro-pop edge that attracts me to 'Sexy! No No No...'

‘DNA’ fell down the charts very quickly so even more of a surprise about its 1St week sales being so high.

With Ur Love isn't her best but I do prefer the alternate reality of that being Cher Lloyd's #1. Never knew it outsold Swagger Jagger in their respective first weeks but it makes sense due to her XF performance.

I completely forgot about 'With Ur Love' selling more in its opening week than 'Swagger Jagger'! (Hot take: 'Swagger Jagger' is the more enjoyable song of the two - it is a bit cringe but in a so bad it's good kind of way, 'With Ur Love' is just ok x)

89. POWER RANGERS- Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (72,000) #3

 

 

No 1 in 12 weeks in 1994

 

How this ever became a thing I don’t know, but following the phenomenon of the TV show we also got this version of the theme which was one of the favourites for the Christmas no 1 spot that year. Fortunately it underperformed.

 

88.DOCTOR DOCTOR- Thompson Twins (77,000) #3

 

 

No 1 in 12 weeks in 1984

 

Though they had bigger hits, “You Take Me Up” reached No 2, but in terms of sales the trio never came closer to the No 1 spot than they did with this. It missed out by a mere 3,000 copies in deposing Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s “Relax” and in the relative low sales period of early 1984 it could easily have been a chart topper.

 

87. CRY JUST A LITTLE BIT- Shakin’ Stevens (86,000) #3

 

 

No 1 in 12 weeks in 1983

 

Running into both “Say Say Say” and “Uptown Girl” this could only get as far as bronze position but marked Shaky’s return to the top 3 for the first time in 11 months. It was written by Bob Heatlie who also wrote “Japanese Boy” (for Aneka in 1981, #1) and “Merry Christmas Everyone” again for Shaky which did go all the way in 1985.

 

DNA would have made a good #1. Cher Lloyd & Power Rangers less so.

Power Rangers theme tune is ICONIC and I will simply not hear otherwise. The theme tune to the only series’ of the show that mattered.

So I've now learned the Power Rangers theme song was released and charted! :o I guess that makes sense. I also won't hear any criticism, banger x
