Him and his team definitely knew that the interest wasn’t quite there as much as the start of the Divide era and have been trying to build interest. I think if he had went from the last Divide single until now without releasing much there would of been more hype. The fact he released the collabs album and the Stormzy feature and they were still hovering in the charts last year as well as ‘Afterglow’ he hasn’t really went away since 2017. So it’s doesn’t feel like the big comeback like when ‘Shape of You’ was released. He has been going for 10 years though so his popularity has to go down eventually and he’s not exactly got a flop single on his hands it’s still massive.

I know it’s only been a day and I expect it to be massive anyway, but it does seem like a bit of poetic justice. The song is literally a rip off of every trend of the past year, it’s such blatant and hollow chart pandering. I refuse to believe he’s not got better in him.
Surprised Ed hasn’t spotted the rock trend and came back with that type of track! He’s played it safe!

 

No doubt the album will feature some rock. If it doesn't already he'll sure as hell be recording some to go onto it now!

 

I also think the Collaborations Project probably weakened this era being as big as it could have been, although it spawned quite a few No.1 singles in itself and sold very well (not compared to Divide, but compared to most other albums!) a lot of it was generic playlist fodder and not as original as a lot of the stuff tucked away behind the singles on his normal studio albums. And - as mentioned above - its existence meant the general public never really got a chance to miss him. It was also probably quite an alienating project for fans of his that prefer the ballads/MOR stuff.

 

Bad Habits is much better than the bland I Don't Care but a lot has happened musically since his last album. The explosion of TikTok and Gen Z aimed music in particular, and Ed is ultimately a product of a former generation so it won't be as easy for him now. I fully expect a mid-tempo or rock song from him next and then a ballad after that leading into Christmas to make sure the album sells well, as that MOR 35+ audience are responsible for so many of his physical sales and he won't want to alienate them.

He definitely went for the Christmas #1 in 2017 in a calculated way IMO

I see. It's a theory but a fairly believable one considering few artists care as much about charts and breaking records as Ed Sheeran. I think him and Taylor Swift are the most chart-obsessed acts in the Western world.

Tbf it’s only been one day, he’s number 1 on iTunes by miles I would assume, number 2 on Apple (but no idea how far behind Olivia he is) and number 12 on Amazon. His video views will be absolutely huge and his Spotify numbers could still increase as the week goes on as more people discover the song and it gets more radio airplay.

His video views are far from huge, at least globally. Don't know how big portion comes from the UK.

I think Adele's comeback single if it ever arrives will still be massive due to the hype and very likely straight in at #1, she has genuinely been away for a noticeably extended period unlike Ed who's "comeback" is after him having 4 #1s in 2019/2020. I doubt her comeback album would sell in anything near the numbers of 21 or 25 though, again doubtless another huge #1 but a big comedown in sales on what she's been used to. Those kind of sales can't be sustained forever.

"25"'s opening sales were also low key a bit inflated by the choice to keep it off Spotify on release (possibly other services as well? I can't remember) so a lot of people (myself included) bought the thing to check it out. 6 years removed from that, I don't think the same strategy would work as effectively.
Yeah but when I'm talking about Adele I don't just mean compared to her last album - obviously those kind of sales are unsustainable for anyone in the current market. What I mean is, compared to the current market I'm not sure Adele's comeback will be record-breaking. I'd actually be surprised if she broke Olivia's weekly streaming record. Hope it's an amazing return and I'm completely wrong though!
