The last of these for Girls Aloud & they only released 4 singles from 3 of their studio albums, which is a bit of a shock, considering both 'Tangled Up' & 'Out Of Control' had several contenders for single releases - 'Girl Overboard' & 'Control Of The Knife' from 'Tangled Up' & for 'Out of Control' had 'Rolling Back The Rivers In Time' & 'Love Is Pain', any one of these could have made great choices, but oh well for the time being we have 3 pretty great tracks on display here, but what's your fave/least fave?

Jump [sound of the Underground]
Wake Me Up [What Will The Neighbours Say]
Whole Lotta History [Chemistry]

BEST: Wake Me Up. It's such an underrated/forgotten song now but it's such a BANGER.

WORST: I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't... but 'Whole Lotta History' just doesn't quite stack up against the others.

I kinda don't think of 'Jump' as being a 4th single, more as a standalone between albums single that got tacked on to Sound of the Underground.

It essentially pioneered the Mabel album model.

I know 'Jump' was more of a stand-alone, but I included it coz there would only be 2 songs in this poll. Also why didn't 'Tangled Up' at least have a 4th single, they could have easily pushed out another top 10 hit. There were many contenders - 'Girl Overboard', 'Black Jacks' & 'Control Of The Knife'

1. Wake Me Up

2. Jump

3. Whole Lotta History

Best: Whole Lotta History

Worst: Jump

I'm not sure a song that features on TWO of their studio albums could really be standalone! (I see it as more of a SOTU song than WWTNS? anyway)

1. Whole Lotta History  so underrated!

2. Wake Me Up

3. Jump

What an amazing trio though!

For me, Jump feels like a proper 4th single from Sound of the Underground because it played an incredibly crucial role in reviving their album sales, to the extent that it saved them from being dropped! So I regard it as firmly a part of that debut era.

Such was Jump’s success that Polydor must have thought it would be an important inclusion in order to attract more sales for their second album as well. All of this reflects exactly what S Club 7 did with Never Had a Dream Come True single, 7 album re-release album and the Sunshine album.

The “new song + album re-release” tactic was happening some years before Girls Aloud (examples include: 1999 - Honeyz, 2000 - S Club 7, 2001 - Atomic Kitten) so I wouldn’t give Girls Aloud particular credit for being re-release pioneers. Also I don’t think the physical re-release model had any particular bearing on Mabel’s album tactic. Continually updating the streaming version of her album with a string of new singles is quite a different and modern approach. Interestingly her label didn’t even bother to physically re-release it to include all these new songs.

01. Wake Me Up (one of their best songs, so underrated!)

02. Jump (possibly their best cover?)

03. Whole Lotta History (nice but doesn't excite me as much as the other two)
