Like a Virgin is so iconic for her... but it almost feels a little bit "novelty" now. As dandy* said, it's not something that I would actually choose to listen to.

 

Nothing Really Matters is good, but yeah, the worst of her Ray of Light singles.

Another Ray of Light track out in quick succession and also our first song with an 8+ average! Drowned World (Substitute for Love) is an ambient song about spirituality and the journey to finding true love over superficial things. The music video is harrowing in many ways, and shows Madonna running from paparazzi (it was released soon after the death of Princess Diana and so the parallels were undeniable). The song opens the album and so beautifully sets up the vibe both lyrically and musically; it is a journey of spirituality. Madonna has stated that it is the most important song on the album. With the same average, but more top scores, Dress You Up drops out next. The fifth and final single from her second album, it was also the last song to be added to the album. Featuring a guitar solo played by Nile Rodgers who also produced the song, the song uses a metaphor of fashion for passion. A live performance from Madonna's tour was used as a music video for the song.

It took me a while to like Drowned World, at first I found it not even single material but love it now

Dress You Up is incredible, one of her best and most under.rated oldies, I remember being obsessed with the song as a kid...

Huge love from me for both Dress You Up and even more for, Drowned World.... I'd of been happy if DW was in the Top 10 - an unconventional choice of single, and I love it all the more because of that. Sublime.

 

Drowned World really is something else. Love it. The video is very much inspired by the death of Diana. I think they slightly recreated the CCTV of Diana leaving the building for the start.

 

Dress You Up is another fave. Not one I loved as a kid, but now one of the best tracks on Like a Virgin.

Next out it's the haunting, heart-breaking ballad Oh Father. Taken from the Like A Prayer album (and later Something to Remember), the song deals with the male figures of authority in Madonna's life with her father at the centre. After the death of her mother, Madonna's relationship with her father soured and she explores this pain and sadness through this song. The music video was directed by David Fincher and is a reflective piece about her mother's death while Madonna in present day follows a young girl trying to escape an abusive father. Lightening proceedings somewhat, from the same album we also lose Cherish, which preceeded Oh Father as the 3rd single from the album. In this much more light-hearted single, Madonna sings of love and romance and the devotion that she has for her lover. A commercial success and inspired by Romeo and Juliet, the song was written in a state of super happiness and positivity that Madonna recognised herself knew would not last. The joy is captured throughout the song and video and it's a light relief in an otherwise hard-hitting album.

'Oh Father' is a MASSIVE favourite of mine. Never fails to move me completely. :wub: :wub: :wub:

First out in this set, it's the second single from Madonna's second album! Material Girl was indicitive of Madonna's life at the time and sees Madonna seeking a life of riches and material things. Often noted as the song that truly made Madonna into an icon, it was a big success around the world and continued to cement her place on the pop scene. The music video helped with the building of this icon status and is a mimicry of Marilyn Monroe's performance of the song "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" from the film, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Madonna has since stated that she regrets recording the song because of how the media latched onto it as a nickname for her. We also lose Beautiful Stranger from the soundtrack of the film, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. A psychedelic pop and disco song, it features production from William Orbit and was later included on her greatest hits albums. For the song, Madonna earned her fifth Grammy award (Best Song Written for Visual Media) and it became a commercial success, including in the US where it wasn't given a full release. In the music video for the song, Madonna is joined by Austin Powers himself!
