November 3, 20213 yr Incredible for Killer to finish so high Would have never thought Great classic too bad Seal was never credited
November 3, 20213 yr Oh of course nostalgia can influence, but it's this angle of oh people MUST'VE given this song 30 points due to nostalgia when they were a child, there's no possible other explanation because it has no merits etc, when a few of us have explained (not that we needed to justify anything...) that this isn't the case. I was not even alive at the start of this decade and merely 2 years old by the end of it, I just love the song and don't appreciate this weird repeated dissection (as if we're trying to be caught out like it's shameful to enjoy it...) just because it's the Spice Girls. Fine if you don't like the song but the incessant invalidation is tiring. I have a very open-minded taste and there's nothing wrong with it! Elsewhere, it's also cool if people are primarily into pop music of a similar ilk, do your thing. If I could like this post then I would! There's SO MUCH I could say about vitriol that harmless young fans face and gender double standards but I'll be here for hours and don't want to distract too much from the point of Gezza's brilliant thread. So I'll leave it here because I think I'm done shouting loud in defence, when I shouldn't have to be doing that. I like what I like and there's nothing embarrassing about that! ~~~ 'Killer' now a totally different song but also brilliant! I don't know what it would've sounded like at the time but over 30 years later it feels fresh and in its own lane. 👏🏿 Exactly! I always had a group of friends who would Snear and look down their noses at me because of the music I liked and it still happens now and I’m near 40!!
November 4, 20213 yr Great result for Killer and it’s done really well to top such a strong year. It doesn’t sound dated at all and of course Seal’s vocals are brilliant. I love the follow up, The Space Jungle, too. Not sure what happened to him after that. Killer has an amazing production, I really love it, but I think I prefer Space Jungle's vocals. I thought it was Adamski's vocal on it but Wikipedia says Ricardo da Force. :o ^_^
November 4, 20213 yr Very impressed that Killer has come this far - it's the only song in the top 12 that didn't make the final 100 of the Ultimate #1s a couple of years ago.
November 4, 20213 yr I loved Killer at the time but as the decades have passed it has improved for me and is an all time top 100 track for me. As I have remarked elsewhere, Killer has been almost universally prased and loved, it's been covered a lot - atb, Sugababes, George Michael - but nothing has ever sounded like it since. No one tried to rip it off or copy any elements of it. Which is quite rare for such a song. For some reason this youtube video won't embed in this post. The hi-hat is rarely as important to a dance song as it is in Killer. Prominant and recognisable. Edited November 4, 20213 yr by Colm
November 4, 20213 yr Excellent to see “Killer” in the Top 10!! I don't remember it from the time but I remember discovering it when I watched the BBC Series 'I Love the 90s' and started to buy the Guinness Hit Singles books in the early 2000s and going through all the #1s. 1990 always struck me as a great year for number 1s. Here's what I wrote about it for me & Colm's Dance #1s of the 90s thread: At the time, the DJ was just a face hidden behind harsh electronic synths and the star was invariably the singer on the record - in this case the soaring vocals/lyrics of an unknown 27 year-old Seal - who was propelled into the spotlight after the single’s run at No. 1. However on “Killer”, Seal - who came to Adam’s attention in late 1989 at a large illegal rave in Northamptonshire - was left uncredited, with much made of this when the record became massive, and was the basis for a re-recorded solo version released in late 1990 that went back to #8 for Seal. The single has quite rightly become a 1990s dance classic, and remains relatively un-dated save for the piano break, a testament to the excellent production and play between the tense electronic beats and Seal’s stunning vocals. It struck a chord with the British public and went on to spend an entire month at the top of the singles chart. It's a shame that neither artist managed to have much success after, Adamski hit the Top 10 just once later that same year, and despite “Crazy” going to #2 in early 1991 Seal only managed a total of 4 additional Top 10 hits, including his most recent “My Vision” (#6 in 2002) - another dance music collaboration with Isle of Wight DJ Dave Lee (Jakatta). Sorry I didn't vote in this Gezza, but thanks for running this. I am following of course and muchly approving of the results - especially “Viva Forever” appearing in the Top 10 as the Spice Girls best! *Hides from Bjork*
November 4, 20213 yr I would have said that Seal had huge success in 1991. His album entered at number 1, stayed there 3 weeks, didn't leave the top 10 for 17 weeks, spent 57 consecutive weeks in the album chart, becoming the 11th best selling album of 1991, 6th biggest studio album, 5th best selling British album, and he got 2 Brits in 1992. Even looking at his singles, he had a single in the Top 75 for 30 out of the 52 weeks of 1991. Edited November 4, 20213 yr by Colm
November 4, 20213 yr I am following of course and muchly approving of the results - especially “Viva Forever” appearing in the Top 10 as the Spice Girls best! *Hides from Bjork* Just to add that I’ve revisited Viva Forever as a result of this thread and am gaining a whole new appreciation of it. I was actually going through a weird early teenage phase in 1998 when I only listened to classical music so I only discovered it later. I think I had slightly written it off as generic Spice Girls but it’s much better than that. So thank you all for opening my eyes! :D Incredible that White Town’s still in - I’m guessing that will be #6 but would love to be wrong!
November 4, 20213 yr Here's Seal's UK discography, which sadly doesn't include the original Killer as he wasn't credited Crazy/2 Future love paradise/12 The Beginning/24 Killer EP/8 Violet/39 Prayer for the Dying/14 Kiss from a rose/I’m Alive/20 Newborn friend/45 Kiss from a rose/I’m Alive/4 (re-issue) Don’t cry/Prayer for the Dying/51 Fly like an eagle/13 Human beings/50 My vision/6 (Jakatta ft Seal) Get it together/25 Love's divine/68 Waiting for you/Love's divine/80 Amazing/74 Kiss from a rose/57 (re-entry) Secret/82 Kiss from a rose/67 (re-entry) and in the US: Crazy/7 Killer(solo)/100 Prayer for the dying/21 Kiss from a rose/1 Don't cry/33 Fly like an Eagle/10 Love's divine/79 Waiting for you/89 his 2nd era in 94/95 was pretty huge and he even got a US #1
November 4, 20213 yr Yeh I would agree Seal is still a very well known artist 30 years after ‘Killer’!

November 4, 20213 yr 1997 was by far the best year of the 90s for number 1s! Well pleased with Your Woman being so high.
November 4, 20213 yr Did not expect Your Woman to do that well! :o I do love it though, one of the most unique number 1s.
November 4, 20213 yr Yeah colour me surprised by such a strong showing for 'Your Woman'! Not complaining of course with it being my 15 pointer, very eerie and captivating *.* I'm glad that Dua has put it back in the public consciousness with 'Love Again' too.
November 4, 20213 yr Your Woman was such a refreshing #1 in early 1997 and still sounds unique. It was only 96th in the Ultimate #1s rate in 2019, while the remaining 5 all finished in the top 30 (and 4 in the top 10) so it's done incredibly well here!
November 4, 20213 yr Your Woman is brilliant and I'm delighted it finished so high here  It's such an odd #1 single though, it basically sounds like the sort of 90s song that would have scraped top 30 and then disappeared forever. Probably one of the most leftfield chart toppers of all time.
