I really really doubt that Alex Turner cares about getting the #1.

I’m pretty sure he does seeing as all their other albums have gone to #1. This one misses out, it will break their streak of #1 albums

The fact that neither they nor Taylor have moved suggests that neither care that much about the prospect of missing #1 in the UK.

Following the sound of Tranquility and the singles from this, I'd say that Arctic Monkeys are making music for themselves and not for chart success

Their others went to #1 as they’re massive, not down to Alex’s personal strategic planning. If he cares, it’d been moved by now…

I can’t hear that comparison at all!

I def can actually, it’s an interesting era this!

Surprise! “I Ain’t Quite Where I Think I Am” is out now, and it’s very funky indeed. I’m getting big Toejam & Earl vibes from it in the best way possible.

Just had my first listen through and I’m really enjoying this! Definitely a step up from the last album though still not their ‘signature’ sound so I guess that will still put people off. The first three tracks are my faves so far but I need some more listens.

I like AM, even love for some releases and think they are fantastic in live. At least their concert what I've visited at once 8 years ago is in my personal Top-5.

For me it's the band what should sell out stadiums instead of some pop stars.

But.

Something goes wrong when

- you do release only two albums within 9 years

- both albums have almost the same style

- no real singles material on the newest one

- the album is 37 minutes only

- you get much more energy from the new Simple Minds (in their sixtees) album than from Arctic Monkeys' (in the thirties)!

What's wrong, guys? =(((

Where is your BIG energy, your rock'n'roll, your uniqueness and diversity?!

Alex, we need one more album asap!

I'm very dissapointed =(

The song I really like is Perfect Sense.

Maybe because it's similar to The Beautiful South stuff and the intro and beat are the same like INXS's Never Tear Us Apart.

Arctic Monkeys very much do sell out stadiums! Did you not see their tour for next year?

And tbh as much as I’d like more rock music from them, it’s clearly not what they’re interested in right now - you can’t knock them for that.

I'm sort of with you here but not entirely. To take each bullet point in turn -

- don't care too much if the material is great

- See above

- Don't listen to the charts so singles aren't that relevant unless standalone

- Some of the best albums are short. Not a problem

- If you're more boring than Simple Minds then that is worrying ( although they had energy up to 1986 and were still boring) but energy doesn't equal good.

That said I think what they are doing currently is very capably played songs, that are well produced and I'm sure they mean a lot to the group, particularly Alex. Personally I find them rather dull and lacking in a spark (which is subtly different from energy) and am happy to consign the band to being passed their point of final interest for me. They long ago lost their spark although recaptured it somewhat with AM. However, there will always be those first two albums that remain effervescently bright and that'll do me. The rest is extra. Move on and pick something fresh from the garden. There's loads out there worth your time

Thats an interesting point when an artist evolves their sounds but not in the direction we'd want to

for me evolution is always good, there is nothing I hate more than artists repeating themselves and releasing the same album again and again (Muse, Oasis etc)

but can be frustrating when they evolve into something that it's not our thing

but happens all the time, so yes find something else to listen to while you wait for their next album and see what they do next or give it up entirely

I'm on the same boat as you for AM, but happens to a lot of artists. I'm the biggest Bjork fan but hated her penultime album, was eagerly awaiting the new one, but again, I don't like the new album... so I'll wait til the next one...

one thing I don't agree is with how many albums a band should release and how long those albums should be, quality over quantity ALWAYS!

To be fair, I think Muse have changed it up quite a lot. I think at this point their fans would love them to churn out their old musical style over and over again.

I think musical evolution is good to a point...

If an artist is uncomfortable with the sound they (or their record label) are trying to portray then they've gone too far. The Arctics seem very comfortable with the style they lean towards these daya.

I think the group are in a position of being able to do what they want to do. They’ll always be a big name. They proved themselves in the first eras and then proved they could do it all again with AM. In terms of commercial success, they’ve nothing left to prove. I do find it odd though that people just want AM after AM. Lots or artists get criticised for never changing their sound but it seems to be the opposite with Arctic Monkeys-people just want the same. Although I can understand that people who loved AM might not take to the new albums.

The Car is beautiful though. I liked the last album but I think they’ve improved upon that sound with this one. I’ll be interested to see where they go next.
