Quite a perfect pop album for the early 2000s, Amy Studt first appeared as a 16 year old in 2002 with her debut top 20 single ‘Just A Little Girl’. Fast forward to Summer 2003 and ‘False Smiles’ was released. It peaked at 18 in the charts and didn’t hang around for very long or sell that well which is well and truly a shame. A very personal album, it’s clearly influenced by Amy’s struggles at school as a teenager and the feelings of loneliness and feeling excluded for being different. This is very much at the forefront of the biggest single, no.6 hit ‘Misfit’. A further top 10 single followed in the shape of ‘Under The Thumb’ but then the album was repackaged a needless cover of Sheryl Crow’s ‘All I Wanna Do’ was tagged on and released as a single. It missed the top 20 and Amy was dropped from her label. She has continued to make music since but nothing has ever had the same commercial success.

I only got the album (the original version) this year as I was buying old 2000s albums I couldn’t afford when I was a penniless teenager. It’s fantastic pop rock album full of angst from the era-it wouldn’t sound too out of place next to Avril/Pink/Kelly. You just feel like Amy wasn’t really given the chance. Ladder In My Tights and Happy Now would have been much better releases than that lame cover.

Have you heard the album? What are your impressions?

I'm pretty sure I've listened to the album in the car once on the way back from some holiday but I really can't remember much from to it and I'm not sure who bought it  might give another listen to it soon tbh as I was a fan of the majority of her singles.

She's a clear example of should've had more longevity!

It's been a loooong time since I last heard this album so I can't really remember much other than the singles, but Ladder in My Tights was such an obvious single! :(
I forgot she covered All I Wanna Do, it was definitely pointless as her original material was strong and performing well. Misfit was particularly brilliant.

I fricking love this album.

It was released not long before I started uni and in my first year it was on constant repeat in my house (the opening bars of Just A Little Girl are forever engrained into my memory)

Good single choices, although I’d have released Ladder In My Tights over All I Wanna Do

Her follow up album (annoyingly not on Spotify) is also great

This album is definitely one of my favourites from 2000-2005 era

It is a very cohesive album, almost every single song has beautiful melodies.

The ballads are amazing too! My personal top 3 are:

Carry Me Away, Seconds Away, and Testify

A very good 2000s album! Just hoping her second album comes to streaming soon as it’s such a masterpiece

'Ladder In My Tights' is SO good!

Unbelievable that wasn't actually a single, it's probably the one I've listened to the most in the last few years.

This was a great album & really brings back fond memories really enjoyed the singles "Just A Little Girl", "Misfit" & "Under The Thumb", but why on earth was "All I Wanna Do" chosen to follow these epic tracks. Shame she didn't become more successful as she had real potential. "Ladder In My Tights" SHOULD have been the 4th single, followed by either "Happy Now" or "Superior Mind".

Here's my rating of this album =

1. Just A Little Girl – 10/10
2. Misfit – 10/10
3. Under The Thumb – 9/10
4. All I Wanna Do – 4/10
5. If Only – 8/10
6. Beautiful Lie – 8/10
7. Ladder In My Tights – 10/10
8. Carry Me Away – 9/10
9. Happy Now – 10/10
10. Gonna Be Fine – 6/10
11. Superior Mind – 10/10
12. Going Out of my Mind – 7/10
13. Seconds Away – 7/10
14. Testify – 9/10
15. Nobody – 6/10

Scarp "All I Wanna Do", "Gonna Be Fine" & "Nobody", then this would have been more or less perfect. Plus she had some fantastic b-sides which were criminally ignored & will post in the next topic.

Here are some of Amy Studt's fantastic b-sides that could have easily been included on the album, instead of some of the weaker moments I.E. "All I Wanna Do" =

Back in the good old days of fantastic b-sides, especially "Kick Me", "Queen A", ""False Smiles" & the stunning "Rose", these 4 at the very least should have made the album (hell the album was even named after one of them). Scrap some of the weaker moments such as 'All I Wanna Do', 'Gonna Be Fine', 'Going Out of My Mind' & 'Nobody' & have these for the re-release instead..

I guess for some reason they thought a cover of 'All I Wanna Do' was a safe bet to re-release the album with as it underperformed slightly. God knows why.

Thinking about it, what happened with Stooshe was remarkably similar. Things were going quite well for them, then their label decided to release a pointless cover which missed the top 20 and basically ended their careers there and then.

Anyway, here's my rating:

1 Just A Little Girl - 8.5/10

2 Misfit - 7/10

3 Under The Thumb - 8/10

4 All I Wanna Do - 3/10

5 If Only - 8/10

6 Beautiful Lie - 7.5/10

7 Ladder In My Tights - 7.5/10

8 Carry Me Away - 10/10

9 Happy Now - 9.5/10

10 Gonna Be Fine - 8.5/10

11 Superior Mind - 8/10

12 Going Out Of My Mind - 9/10

13 Seconds Away - 10/10

14 Testify - 10/10

15 Nobody - 9/10

Surely I enjoy the second half more than the first half of the album

Absolutely one of my favourite albums towards the end of high school. I remember buying it from Woolworths while on holiday in Devon  I also got the CD singles when they were released so I'm familiar with the b-sides which I love too.

Echo everyone's thoughts on Ladder in my tights, definitely an album highlight.

I’ve only just heard Ladder In My Tights for the first time. Love it, could definitely have envisaged that as another top ten for her, it’s so anthemic and the chord progression leading up the the chorus is so good <3

I found the original version of this (without All I Wanna Do) in a charity shop yesterday for £1 so snapped it up, I really should have listened to it at the time, there's so much good stuff on here. Better 18 years late than never.

Misfit and Ladder In My Tights are 10/10 songs and I also really like Beautiful Lie, Carry Me Away and Happy Now.

I forgot she covered All I Wanna Do, it was definitely pointless as her original material was strong and performing well. Misfit was particularly brilliant.

Eh, it didn't perform accordingly to what the record label expected. They probably wanted her to be the British answer to Avril Lavigne and she just wasn't. Under the Thumb just scraped the top ten in an era where outside of top ten could get you dropped. So All I Wanna Do was a desperate grab for them.
