The Kid LAROI

In an Apple Music interview from mid-2020, The Kid LAROI reminisced about the short but formative time he spent in LA living with the late emo rapper Juice WRLD. They’d hang out all day, bonding, making music, seeing friends, whatever. People always coming and going, never a dull moment. Sometimes, Juice would wake LAROI up in the middle of the night, wild with excitement about a track LAROI had to put a verse on. Other mornings, LAROI would wake up to his and Juice’s managers saying it was time to pack up and head to Texas. Like, now. He was 15, 16 years old. “I’d never experienced anything like that,” he said. “Especially coming from Australia, where everything is kind of like its own bubble.”

 

Not that 15-year-olds outside Australia would be used to it either. But such is the meteoric ascent of a talented young rapper circa 2020. Born Charlton Howard in 2003, LAROI—whose name is a reference to the Kamilaroi Indigenous nation, in which he has family roots—grew up in the suburbs of Sydney, and began to work on music when he was a pre-teen. Like Juice WRLD, Post Malone or even Lil Peep, LAROI’s key tracks—“ALWAYS DO”, “TRAGIC” and the Juice WRLD collaboration “GO”—blend ultra-melodic trap with shades of alternative rock and classic pop, a fusion that has put him on the front burner of pop-rap. Born in London, Ontario, in 1994, Bieber was famously discovered when his future manager, Scooter Braun, stumbled on some performance videos that Bieber’s mom had uploaded to YouTube to share with family and friends. Braun, who understood not only Bieber’s appeal but the potential of the internet, encouraged him to keep making videos and keep the equipment cheap—an approach that not only helped Bieber’s growing fanbase to understand that he was still just a kid like them, but drafted a new blueprint for how artists could reach audiences in the digital era. With the exception of a voice change around 2011, 2009’s My World, 2010's My World 2.0 and 2012's Believe are more or less of a piece: the sound of a boy trying to stick the landing into puberty. Released in 2015, Purpose showed Bieber developing a more thoughtful connection to his material, including collaborations with vanguard pop producers like Diplo, Skrillex and benny blanco. After a five-year break during which Bieber underwent significant personal changes—including a detox from touring life, a diagnosis of Lyme disease and a epiphanic marriage to Hailey Baldwin—he came back with 2020’s Changes. “People have been putting me on a pedestal,” Bieber told Apple Music. A couple of years after he broke into the mainstream with 2009’s So Far Gone, Drake was browsing art in Los Angeles when a piece caught his eye: a big neon sign that read, “LESS DRAKE, MORE TUPAC.” For a minute, he felt angry, embarrassed—he wanted to walk up and rip the sign off the wall. Instead, he bought it. After all, he figured, you get someone hanging your name next to Tupac’s, even if it’s only to take a shot at it? You must be doing something right.

 

Born Aubrey Drake Graham in Toronto in 1986, Drake became—like Tupac—something of a generational voice, a prism for his pop-cultural moment. Was he an R&B singer who rapped or a rapper who sang? Was he really that sad, or just doing a bit? And if it wasn’t a bit, how could this guy—talented, intuitive, hardworking—really be so down?

 

From minute one, there was something a little different about him: He could be confessional, vulnerable, but also incredibly coarse; he could make an earnest commitment one minute (“Take Care”) and be drunk-dialing the next (“Marvins Room”); he could convince you he was an underdog from his perch on top of the world (“Started from the Bottom”). Critics—and he’s had plenty—like to point out that he started as an actor: He played Jimmy Brooks in the Canadian teen show Degrassi: The Next Generation. But most of all, he felt like a person—someone who isn’t canceled by his paradoxes, but defined by them.

 

Though the feelings remain (always feelings, big feelings), the sound—for the most part, courtesy of longtime affiliate Noah “40” Shebib—is always changing: a little dancehall here (“One Dance”), a little house there (“Passionfruit”), some old New Orleans bounce (“Nice for What”), a bit of Wu-style boom-bap (“Started from the Bottom”), some smooth, to-the-minute trap-soul (“Hotline Bling”). Like Kanye, Drake is as much a curator as he is a creator, an artist capable of arranging collaborators from a universe of styles and making them all fit into his personal vision—an approach that has made him one of the most definitive rappers and pop figures of his era. “I obviously spend a lot of time in my own world,” he told Beats 1 host Zane Lowe in 2016. “But when I do take a look at the broader scope of things, it’s often [in the studio]… Even though I don’t directly, literally address things in my music, I’ve always tried to make music that transcends gender, nationality—to try and unify people. Some call the end of summer the “slow news season”—school's still out, holidays are in full swing, and headlines tend to get weird—and Doja Cat (born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini in 1995) knew just what to do about it. When singer-songwriter Billie Eilish feels something new, the first thing she does is take out her phone and write it down. “You can write anything,” she told Apple Music in an interview for the Up Next series. “You can say the truth, and you can not tell anyone that it’s the truth—you can just write it, and it’ll be yours.” Raised and homeschooled in Los Angeles by actor/musician parents, Eilish (born Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell in 2001) started writing songs when she was around 11, exploring a strain of melancholy, minimal and slightly surrealistic pop influenced as much by Lana Del Rey as the radical honesty of rappers like Tyler, the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt. Becky Hill

With her highly resonant voice and R&B-influenced style, Becky Hill first came to the public's attention competing on series one of The Voice UK. Ultimately reaching the show's semifinal round, Hill emerged a fan favorite and became the first Voice UK contestant to score a number one single when "Gecko (Overdrive)," her collaboration with Dutch EDM star Oliver Heldens, topped the U.K. singles chart in June 2014.

 

Born on February 14, 1994 in Bewdley, Worcestershire, England, Hill was no stranger to music when she first auditioned for the then new The Voice UK in 2012. As a teenager, she had sung with the acoustic rock & soul group Shaking Trees, which created some local buzz and received several plays on BBC Radio. On The Voice UK she made it to the semifinal with her powerful renditions of R&B songs by the likes of John Legend and others, before being eliminated. By her own admission, she was a novice in the music industry game and it took her 18 months to finally get a record deal. In the meantime, however, her sultry, soulful, older-than-her-years voice was highly sought-after by dance artists looking for feature vocalists. Her first recorded appearance, on British drum'n'bass artist Wilkinson's single "Afterglow," went to number eight on the U.K. singles chart. She then appeared on Rudimental's single "Powerless," singing with them at several U.K. festivals in 2013, including Glastonbury.

 

Following her success with Heldens, Hill worked extensively with London-based dance producer MNEK and issued her debut solo single, "Caution to the Wind." It showcased a shift toward a more electronica-influenced sound, with twinkling melodies and production reminiscent of Four Tet. The Eko EP appeared in 2017, and included the single "Unpredictable." The single "Sunrise in the East" followed a year later. German songwriter, producer, and DJ Topic refers to his sound as "melancholic dance music." His songs typically combine striding house beats and light guitar melodies with yearning lyrics about heartache as well as dancefloor escapism. He made his full-length debut with 2015's Miles, and later scored a worldwide hit with 2019's "Breaking Me," featuring A7S. Tobias Topic was born in Solingen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, in 1992. He began producing music using a digital audio workstation when he was 16. Using social media to launch his career, he released his first single, "Light It Up" (with vocalist Jona Selle), in 2014. His debut album, Miles, appeared in 2015, containing several additional singles, including "Home" (featuring Nico Santos), which was certified platinum in Germany and Australia. He continued releasing additional charting singles such as 2016's "Find You" (with Jake Reese), 2017's "Break My Habits," and 2018's "Perfect" (with former Fifth Harmony singer Ally Brooke), which became his first song to reach the Billboard Dance/Electronic chart. Topic's first major worldwide hit, "Breaking Me," featuring Swedish singer A7S (Alexander Tidebrink), was released during the final weeks of 2019, and hit the Top Ten in two dozen countries by the end of 2020.
