Oh 'Son of a Gun' is a clubbercise staple, should've got that xo

I put Little Mix - 'Wings' at first but then changed it when I saw a pattern emerging and remembered the existence of the Birdy one!

Got that Sneaker Pimps song because the letter 'x' is standout and there were only so many words that could be

29. HID BLING’S GLINT

-> BLINDING LIGHTS - The Weeknd

Top 40 debut 2019 | Peak #1 (2020) | Letters 14 | Guessed by 12

You may have heard of this one though – only the longest running chart hit ever (and still counting), and recently crowned Buzzjack’s RotD to boot! Not bad considering it started out 12-17-20-41… Not too surprisingly it gives us another full house!!

30. TEENAGERS DREAM

-> RENEGADE MASTER - Wildchild

Top 40 debut 1995 | Peak #3 (1998) | Letters 14 | Guessed by 4

Finally for the main quiz, nothing to do with MCR or Katy Perry here :) but the joint least guessed anagram (alongside U R The Best Thing). Wildchild was the alias of DJ Roger McKenzie, who sadly died shortly after this reached #11 in 1995 (as a reworked and renamed take on his #34 hit earlier that year). The song was remixed into a beast of a tune by Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim and finally reached the Top 10 in 1998 as part of a rich vein of form alongside his remix of Cornershop’s Brimful Of Asha, leading up to his own hits later that year.

Now on to those bonus questions!

BONUS: Connection between these songs

Although each song reached the Top 10, part (a) of the theme worth 3 points, is that they had earlier run(s) in the Top 40 where they did not.

Also worth 3 points, part (b) of the theme is that their Top 40 debuts were all in an earlier calendar year than the one when they made the Top 10.

Scoring 3 points for part (a): Mangø, JulianT, LewisGT

Scoring 3 points for part (b): n4yr

but nobody got the full marks for both parts!

Jade and Ansel mentioned that each song didn’t peak on their first week, so I've given them both 1.5 points as that is implied by each part of the theme. A few of you guessed that each of the 30 years since 1991 were represented, unfortunately they were a few gaps here and there!

Glad to have got something from that! :cheer: just noticed how many songs were either boosted by a performance/exposure, remix or general re-release.
Ah nuts I didn’t think of the calendar year thing at all! I think the fact Blinding Lights was only out of the Top 40 for one week before it came back through me off!

BONUS: Order of these songs

To find the reason the songs were in this order, you probably needed to have worked out that each song had earlier Top 40 runs first. The songs are listed in ascending order of their peak position from their earlier Top 40 run(s), from #40 in Q1 to #11 in Q30:

Q1. #40, 2015: LIGHT IT UP - Major Lazer (feat. Nyla)

Q2. #39, 2017: FEEL IT STILL - Portugal. The Man

Q3. #38, 1994: YOUR LOVING ARMS - Billie Ray Martin

Q4. #37, 2012: ONLY LOVE - Ben Howard

Q5. #36, 1998: I PUT A SPELL ON YOU - Sonique

Q6. #35, 2013: TURN BACK TIME - Sub Focus

Q7. #34, 2001: TRUE LOVE NEVER DIES - Flip & Fill (feat. Kelly Llorenna)

Q8. #33, 2011: PRINCESS OF CHINA - Coldplay & Rihanna

Q9. #32, 1992: JUMP AROUND - House Of Pain

Q10. #31, 1994: U SURE DO - Strike

Q11. #30, 2009: TELEPHONE - Lady Gaga (feat. Beyoncé)

Q12. #29, 1993: TURN ON, TUNE IN, COP OUT - Freakpower

Q13. #28, 2004: SOMEBODY TOLD ME - Killers

Q14. #27, 2005: ORDINARY PEOPLE - John Legend

Q15. #26, 1994: THE SUNSHINE AFTER THE RAIN - Berri

Q16. #25, 1993: KILLING IN THE NAME - Rage Against The Machine

Q17. #24, 2015: ONE LAST TIME - Ariana Grande

Q18. #23, 2020: CONFETTI - Little Mix

Q19. #22, 2004: I PREDICT A RIOT - Kaiser Chiefs

Q22. #19, 1993: U R THE BEST THING – D:Ream

Q23. #18, 2014: HOLD BACK THE RIVER - James Bay

Q24. #17, 2012: DRINKING FROM THE BOTTLE - Calvin Harris (feat. Tinie Tempah)

Q25. #16, 2013: WINGS - Birdy

Q26. #15, 1996: SIX UNDERGROUND - Sneaker Pimps

Q27. #14, 1992: HIGHWAY TO HELL - AC/DC

Q28. #13, 1994: SON OF A GUN - JX

Q29. #12, 2019: BLINDING LIGHTS - The Weeknd

Q30. #11, 1995: RENEGADE MASTER - Wildchild

Mangø, JulianT and LewisGT worked this one out and score the full 4 points!

Ansel and n4yr guessed that there was a decreasing gap between debut and peak as the questions went on, which wasn’t strictly true throughout, but they both receive 1 point for being on the right lines!

EXTRA BONUS: Question number at which the following anagram could have appeared instead, in keeping with the connection and order:

NOW I BAIT TO GO FOR POSSIBLE WIDGETS

And as the last bonus question, I gave a choice of simply giving the answer to the anagram for up to 3 points in the same way as Q1-Q30, or instead giving the question number where it could have appeared instead for 5 points. The solution to the anagram - the longest in the whole quiz - was:

-> PROFESSIONAL WIDOW (IT’S GOT TO BE BIG) - Tori Amos

Top 40 debut 1996 | Peak #1 (1997) | Letters 30 | Guessed by 5

Scoring 5 points, Mangø, JulianT and LewisGT correctly identified that since it peaked at #20 on its first Top 40 run, the question number where it could have appeared was Q21!! (Jade’s complete guess of Q22 was so close!)

chrissmith276 and StoneDragon score 3 points for giving the correct answer to the anagram instead!

At the end of all that, there were three players who solved all the anagrams in the quiz, but with two of them sealing the majority of the bonus questions as well, congratulations to our joint winners Mango and Julian! :cheer:

1st= | 102 points | JulianT

4th | 88 points | n4yr

5th | 81 points | LewisGT

6th | 77.5 points | StoneDragon

12th | 14.5 points | PeteFromLeeds

Thank you all for taking part, and for all the time and effort you put into your answers. Next up in the series is Mango’s Chart Predictions quiz!

Quite a few songs I'm not familiar with, so I'm not kicking myself too much  congrats Mango + Julian, that's quite a score, and thanks for hosting Jim!

Well done Mangø!

I admit I did spend many of the free moments I had over 2.5 weeks on this but I knew it would need it. Thanks so much again for this Jim - they’re always so well thought out and a brilliant voyage of discovery in weird and wonderful chart runs!

Well done Mangø!

Right back atcha!

Yeah having some free time to tackle these was the key element for me. I'm delighted with joint top place :D

Well done everybody! That was a tough one! I'm happy enough with how I did after making the mistake of not opening the quiz thread until Saturday.

Very clever idea for the theme/connections, and a fun quiz if at times aggravating :P, thanks Jim!

proud of myself for getting 28/30... never thought I'd get anywhere near that many haha

I kept looking at peak positions and years for the song order, and there was just no logical pattern... figured it had something to do with their chart runs!

If I'd had double the amount of time to spend on it... I might have sneaked up to 8th at best! Thanks for hosting, brain-melting as ever!
By the way, I meant to say that the theme was quite remarkable really. It must have taken some time to come up with songs from each position that later went on to make the top 10. Good effort!

Thanks dandy* - yes some of the spots took a while to fill, and then I had to reject some songs like Titanium because I couldn't come up with an anagram  but I was keen to see it through! I'll probably move on from the anagramming next time, but I'm glad people enjoyed them - thanks for the nice comments all :)

Yeah I think the best I can come up with for TITANIUM is "I, IAN MUTT" most of your anagrams are really good ones, I honestly don't know how you have the patience to sit there and come up with them!
