Posted November 23, 20213 yr On the upcoming UK Singles Chart (Friday 26th November), The Weeknd is set to make UK Singles Chart. Blinding Lights is set to become the first song in the history of the UK Singles Chart to spend two consecutive years in said chart. Two whole years in the chart without ever leaving is absolutely insane.
November 23, 20213 yr Two years?! I didn't realise it was still charting. It kind of makes me wish there was some sort of rule like the US and songs going recurrent.
November 23, 20213 yr Two years?! I didn't realise it was still charting. It kind of makes me wish there was some sort of rule like the US and songs going recurrent. I'm not actually that keen on the song myself, he's done so much better quality wise but it is insanely popular (and despite being on ACR for all of this year and will soon never be eligible for a reset) Deserves to chart to reflect that popularity. Same as 'Perfect' and 'Mr Brightside'. There aren't too many records in this category that genuine new hits can't get through. Of course it could well exit the chart this Christmas due to the festive takeover although could see it staying on due to Christmas/end of year parties.... Edited November 23, 20213 yr by Smint
November 23, 20213 yr I keep forgetting what this sounds like, hearing it on the radio, shazaming it, and then I quickly forget it again and then the cycle repeats itself.
November 23, 20213 yr That's the streaming era for you. It's still an abnormally long chart run even for the streaming era. Putting it this way kind of undermines it. The run will be ended by the Christmas invasion soon of course.
November 23, 20213 yr This will happen more and more frequently as time goes on (obviously) but impressive for whatever song it would ultimately be to set such a record first! Definitely didn't suffer from overplay as much as the other previous long-runners imo which helped it no end.
November 23, 20213 yr Hopefully Levitating (the female Blinding Lights) can do the same. Considering that's already at 83, 14 places lower than BL, I say it's extremely unlikely to...
November 23, 20213 yr And to think they pushed Heartless more at the time, lol. Which was the right thing to do because it allowed 'Heartless' to be a hit first, with both of them having #1 peaks in the US. For the ridiculous level of success it went on to achieve on the Hot 100 it's really weird to think that 'Blinding Lights' fell 11-52 in its second week.
November 23, 20213 yr For the ridiculous level of success it went on to achieve on the Hot 100 it's really weird to think that 'Blinding Lights' fell 11-52 in its second week. Contextually it makes sense though, Billboard's formula gives strong weight to sales that (especially in the US) have big first week hype numbers. And then on the chart itself, it was tipping over to December with heaps of Christmas songs overtaking it, Spotify Wrapped coming out that week to gear focus away from new hits, and tragically it was also the week Juice WRLD passed away and he had several songs climb ahead. If he put out the song a month back, it probably would've been a more gentle decline. There was a solid 2 months of 'this is obviously a hit but radio isn't letting it happen' of course, because why give even the illusion of free will on the charts :bounce: Edited November 23, 20213 yr by Dircadirca
November 23, 20213 yr Oh yes of course it made sense at the time, it's just not what you'd immediately expect from a song that went on to become so famously stable without knowing the context.
