I'll start this in the coming days - firstly thanks dandy* for the fab banner!

Some 'rules' for my countdown:

Songs must have been released as a single in the UK;

Released between 1994 and 1997 only;

4 songs maximum from Blur, Pulp and Oasis;

3 songs maximum from Suede and The Verve;

2 songs maximum from any other artist;

My own broad definition of Britpop has been applied;

Positions based on my own taste, although I have tried to factor in impact and give a fair spread to a range of artists.

I hope you all enjoy :D

Great idea, looking forward to it

Woooo hooooooo!

So to start off my countdown we have Blur's Song 2. Named as such by the band as the second song on 1997's Blur, Song 2 was the follow up to the sublime Beetlebum and provides the punk energy on the album. Song 2 seemed a flash in the pan at the time, but this has grown to be one of their best known tracks not just here but in the USA where it has been used at sporting events for years. I think the woo hoo hook and the indecipherable lyrics allow us to sing along in our own sweet way. By 1997 I think we all needed a less cockney cheeky Chappy kind of Blur and they knocked it out of the park for sure.

Wow what a way to start the countdown!

Blur by far one of the best and most unique bands of the 90s!

I must say "Song 2" isn't one of my fave's- I like their more reflective moments, "To The End", "The Universal", "No Distance Left To Run" etc. Looking forward to the rest of the rundown!

Used to love Song 2. I over played it!

I must do my own top 50 Britpop songs

great start, sounds more like Nirvana than Blur themselves but great track, very unique track in their discography
Song 2 is a brilliant track! Not one of my personal Blur favourites but brilliant nonetheless and has definitley stood the test of time. I do love the symmetry of it peaking at #2 but it's still a massive shame it didn't get to #1 after losing a midweek lead to the turd of a record that is I Believe I Can Fly.

Interesting that Song 2 is out already, I still love it and it remains a distinctive rush of a track. Although I must admit I don't really associate it with Britpop, I sort of see their self titled era as them moving on from Britpop.

What’s the difference between Brit pop and post brit pop though?

What’s the difference between Brit pop and post brit pop though?

Good question Steve.

There isn’t a cut and dried definition of what Britpop is, or what makes a band/album/song Britpop, which is why I have said the countdown is subjective. I think Song 2 squeezes in because it was released in Spring ‘97 and it has a certain energy, but I agree the album Blur is more post Britpop.

I haven’t included tracks from Oasis’s Be Here Now or Pulp’s This Is Hardcore as they are post Britpop imo. Also, Radiohead will be absent as they aren’t Britpop imo, though others may disagree.

Numbers 49, 48 and 47 coming up later and thanks for the comments/discussion so far!

I'm building my own list now.

Will be interesting to see how it differs from mine once I’ve revealed my top 50!

An electrifying start to the countdown! I agree with others that it sounds very Nirvana. Love the distorted bass and signature "woo hoo!"
