That TOTP was actually the week Wet Wet Wet first went to #1, little did we or Jarvis know it would still be there 14 weeks later!

Ahhhh! My brain confused when it was - clearly they just didn’t like Wet Wet Wet!

22. Echobelly - Great Things

Release: 1995 Chart Peak: 13

Great Things was The first and biggest hit from the excellent album On.

It's inspirational message fits right in with the optimism of the mid 90s and this is great Britpop tune!

but it wasn't their debut single, was it? thought it was the lead from album 2?

Oh my! I totally forgot they had an album before On! I’ll edit, ta.

Dark Therapy was always my favourite from the On album, although I do think Great Things better captured the spirit of britpop

I loved Echobelly's Bellyache EP and first album (and still do) but never really got in to their second one, and didn't even bothered with the third.

I always felt '95 (when Great Things was released) was the year were the scene's problems began. Baring some obvious exceptions, it felt like it became more about being cool and featuring in Loaded than it did the music.

21. Blur - The Universal

Blur_-_The_Universal_front_single_cover.

Release: 1995 Chart Peak: 5

By 1995, Blur were at the peak of their fame. After THAT chart battle in August 1995, they released the second single from The Great Escape in November of 1995. The Universal went on to chart at number 5 and imo is the best single by far from the album.

The song has a sci-fi/Kubrick theme to it and that is backed up the cover art taken from 2001: A Space Odyssey and the memorable video which was a homage to A Clockwork Orange. And a cool looking golf ball speaker.

The great Escape is a bit of a disappointment. The Universal is not though, even though a British Gas advert nearly ruined it!

Recap 30-21

21 Blur – The Universal

22 Echobelly – Great Things

23 Pulp – Babies

24 The Verve – Lucky Man

25 Suede – Beautiful Ones

26 Menswear – Being Brave

27 Shed 7 – Going For Gold

28 Ash – Girl From Mars

29 Cast – Walkaway

30 Kula Shaker - Tattva

love The Universal, one of Blur's best, they did have great slow tempo songs

from the top 30, 21-25+Ash are all amazing classics

The Universal is probably my most played song of all time. I played it multiple times a day for about 5 months.

Universal is utterly glorious.

There’s quite a lot in this that I need to take some time to discover properly.

I have to say that “The Universal” had been completely ruined for me by British Gas having it as their hold music, though I haven't listen to it for a while (and have escaped British Gas) so maybe I would enjoy it again now..

Love Pulp's “Babies”; as I think Severin said it is one of the earliest Britpop singles (released in October 92 originally) but as you say it marks quite nicely the transition into the Different Class era with its uncomfortable but sort of relatable lyricism, plus I think Jarvis' voice would sound great on pretty much anything! Looking forward to the Top 20, I think I know which will be your Top 2 Pulp selections but happy to be surprised, I think you've made some excellent picks so far tho.

Lucky then that I don't live in the Uk and have no clue about British Gas :D

Just missed out Part 3

Pulp - Sorted For E's & Wizz and Mis-Shapes (AA side)

Release: 1995 Chart Peak: 2

Due to my own restrictions on the number of Pulp songs in the countdown, there had to be some casualties (or as Jarvis would say, don't be a Casual (ty)). The wonderful double whammy of Mis-Shapes which is the anthem for the different and outcasts and the controversial Sorted For E's and Wizz (STOP THIS SICK STUNT said the Daily Mirror as the single sleeve showed how to make a drug wrap) charted at number 2 in September 1995. Sorted was premiered to great effect at Pulp's headline gig at Glastonbury 1995 and the video shows this iconic performance.

Both songs are beloved classics to me - oh for a Pulp top 50!

I think I left an important part of my brain somewhere in a field in Hampshire........

Menswear - Daydreamer

HI242-Menswear-Daydreamer-1996-CD.jpg
Release: 1995 Chart Peak: 14

Daydreamer is probably Menswear's best known song. Not entirely sure if its rubbish or not! Hmmmmm.

Top 20 starting tomorrow :D
Much prefer Sorted than Mis shapes

The Universal is a fantastic song but unfortunately that British Gas advert did it no favours.

Sorted For E's & Wizz is basically the anthem of a British music festival, love it.
