Never heard of that Gene band or that song but it’s really lovely, reminds me of the Smiths!

Also really love the Supergrass track a classic for me!

A lot of Gene's material is very reminiscent of The Smiths.

42. Rialto – Monday Morning 5.19

R-1615632-1536483228-5950.jpeg.jpg

Release: 1997 Chart Peak: 37

Probably the 'latest' song on the countdown (after I removed the Verve's Lucky Man), Rialto were formed in 1997 at the end of the Britpop era. The band were actually dropped before their debut album dropped in 1998, but they were vey much bigger up by the music press at the time and were expected to be as big as Oasis! Nonetheless, Monday Morning 5:19 (a primetime to be wondering about the whereabouts of a significant other) is a lovely song and is rather reminiscence of the Beatles.

Good inclusion! :D

Love the Rialto one, not so keen on "Wake Up Boo" which is a little annoying to my ears

41. The Seahorses – Love Is The Law

TheSeahorsesLoveIstheLaw.jpg

Release: 1997 Chart Peak: 3

The Seahorses were fronted by John Squire, ex-guitarist of the Stone Roses and the band was formed in 1996. Squire wrote Love is The Law and it has heavy Stone Roses influences and the song exploded on release in 1997, charting at number 3. The Seahorses seemed to be everywhere in mid 1997 but petered out soon after following the release of their debut album Do It Yourself. This is a great guitar led Britpop debut, but they released a better single - more on that later.

Maybe the spoof band The Shirehorses (formed by Radio 1 DJ Mark Radcliffe of Radlcliffe and Lard fame) contributed towards their split?!

Not a huge fan of the Seahorses but that Rialto track is superb.

Plus Wake Up Boo is one of the very best singles from the era, so joyous!

Never liked anything that the ex-StoneRoses did solo

Have to check Rialto,cannot recall

Much about them

Recap 50 -41:

41. The Seahorses – Love Is The Law

42. Rialto – Monday Morning 5.19

43. The Boo Radleys – Wake Up Boo!

44. Supergrass – Sun Hits The Sky

45. Gene – Olympian

46. Elastica - Connection

47. Geneva - Tranquilizer

48. Ocean Colour Scene – The Riverboat Song

49. Sleeper – Sale Of The Century

50. Blur – Song 2

I'm not actually familiar with Rialto so i've made a new discovery through this thread already! Gave the track listed in the countdown a listen and its pretty decent. ;)
Just checked Rialto and they sound to me quite similar to Pulp

The Rialto track is particularly good but they always made me think of how My Life Story would sound if the party ended and they'd gone a bit melancholy.

Also fingers crossed for the inclusion of some other lesser known gems like Silver Sun or Strangelove. And Menswear obviously

I adore My Life Story! Wonderfully decadent.

One of the 3 you are crossing fingers for is coming, one I am not a fan of and one I had actually forgotten about but was a fan of!

INTERLUDE

Just missed out Part 1

So there will be 4 sections of songs that missed out my countdown for various reasons! Here is the first interlude between 41 and 40:

Cast - Sandstorm

220px-Cast_-_Sandstorm_cover_art.jpg
Release: 1996 Chart Peak: 8

Sandstorm was the third release from Liverpool based Cast's debut album All Change. This cracker just missed out as I hold another track from All Change in much higher esteem and I wanted more variety of bands in the countdown. Still, its just as good as Fine Time which also missed out. Sorry, Cast!

Silver Sun - Golden Skin

Release: 1997 Chart Peak: 32

Thanks for the reminder Severin! I has completely forgotten how much I liked Silver Sun - I even saw them live! Golden Skin is by far their best song and sounds a bit like Weezer.

Number 40 coming up tomorrow :D

Love “Connection”, though I only ever heard of it thanks to Trigger Happy TV. I loved the soundtrack to that show so much that I bought the albums and it introduced me to many other great songs like Gene's “Speak To Me Someone”, Icehouse's “Don't Believe Anymore” and House of Love's “Shine On”.

Appreciate these aren't Britpop so sorry for spamming your thread Jester. Looking forward to the Top 40 though!

You’re not spamming! It’s great to hear how one good song can get you onto more :D

Good choice with Golden Skin. Massively underrated band were Silver Sun.

Glad to have reminded you!

Cast were great and under-appreciated, and I nominate Mansun as a consistently good band that never had a big hit...
I did hate Cast for some reason I cannot recall now :D :D :D don't think I ever liked a single song from them
