"Not-quite-as-good-as-The-La's" seems to have been a common comment of the time, along with "Scouse" and "annoying" but John Powers was much more consistent in Cast and they were less gobby than errr THAT Manc band... :D

I always liked their jangly "power" pop... :D

Yeah, I can't say I was a fan of Cast either, although I have a soft spot for Alright because it reminds me of my girlfriend at the time.

I hated The La's too.

40. Suede - Stay Together

Stay_together_song.jpg

Release: 1994 Chart Peak: 3

Stay Together is one of those non-album singles that benefit from a sound of 'between albums'. The track was released ahead of the album campaign for Dog Man Star and has Bernard Butler on guitar - he would leave the band during 1994 (more from him later!). It is a beautiful if dramatic song and is quite rightfully considered to be one of Suedes finest moments.

This was also the first single to be released in the USA under the band name of London Suede.

Never got Stay Together

I live Suede but thats probably my least fav song of theirs :/

But, Bernard Butler played on the 3 singles off DMS.

And I don't understand the link to Coming Up.

I'm very confused.

The full version of Stay Together is amazing.

Wasn't the Stay Together single released before Dog Man Star or am I making that up?

Either way, it's a great single and a staple of mine to this day - they really were on such a streak of genius during the 90s.

Yeh Rialto sounds very like Pulp, another band I’ve heard due to this great thread!
I absolutely love “Stay Together” - fantastic start to the Top 40! I'm not sure if “Animal Nitrate” would Q for this chart (released in 93?) but I prefer that one, though I know that “The Drowners” is generally regarded as the first Britpop chart hit single (#49 in May 1992).. shame it didn't make the Top 40, although it would have sounded odd on the chart amongst all that rave. :D
Oh I thought you'd have heard of Pulp before :kink:

Not enough anyway :arrr:

You know, I was talking gubbins for the write up - serve me right for being tired/having a dodgy Suede memory.

Now edited - apologies.

For me Animal Nitrate, The Drowners and Metal Mickey are all Britpop classics. I was very excited for the album at the time but unlike most people I came away rather disappointed when it finally arrived. I often get villified for this but I think beyond the singles, there is a lot of filler on it.

I remember The Drowners stood out a mile when it first came out, as most of the alt. scene was dominated by the US bands like Sonic Youth and Nirvana or Madchester hangovers like Inspiral carpets. Along with Pulp's Babies and Blur's Popscene, it definitley kicked off the hype around the emerging movement.

Suede have lots of ups but also lots of downs

for me it was like The Drowners = 10, Metal Mickey = 0 worst song ever, Animal Nitrate =10... then We are the Pigs = 0, The wild ones =10...

the albums were also very mixed with lots of subpar tracks

There is a lot of filler on it. I came from the other direction though. I had fallen for Dog Man Star before I heard it and it doesn't really compare to DMS.

It was We Are the Pigs that got me into them.

The Drowners is always the one I find overrated.

39. Ash - Goldfinger

Release: 1996 Chart Peak: 5

Goldfinger (no, not THAT Goldfinger!) was the first top 5 hit for Northern Ireland's Ash in 1996. I would say this is arguably their best known single from album 1977 and for really represents the heady days of Britpop. Although, this isn't the highest Ash song in the countdown....!

We're gonna have to compile a list of all the songs you've called the worst song ever and find out which one is the definitive. :D

'Walkaway' is a great song I think, very nostalgic!
