February 19, 20223 yr Friday I'm In Love has got that early Britpop sound. Good song lyrically, but not one of my favourite Cure songs as the production is a bit too sensible and MOR sounding. Strange that Raving I'm Raving got to #2 but the track it sampled only made #22. And yes I agree the song is better with the sample, they did a decent job without the sample for the TOTP performance though. Edited February 19, 20223 yr by Ring Kollo
February 21, 20223 yr Felt like The Cure reached their commercial peak with ‘Friday I’m In Love’ pretty impressive considering they had the sir first hit in 1980 and breakthrough in 1983 with ‘Cool For Cats’!
February 25, 20223 yr Author 6TH JUNE KWS were under considerable pressure this week at the top but “Please Don’t Go/ Game Boy” held on in the end despite a loss of 25% week on week to register 57,000 copies, but that’s enough to increase its total to 328,000 and overtake “Goodnight Girl” in the YTD chart but it is around 180,000 short of overtaking Shakespears Sister at present. glWQc8tgYQA Last time out they sampled Gwen Guthrie now the Utah Saints turn to Kate Bush for inspiration and her 1985 #20 hit “Cloudbusting”. Unlike Shut Up And Dance (who fall 2-15) they got clearance from the woman herself to use the track on “Something Good” which debuts at No 9 (16,000) as it immediately becomes their biggest hit as it arrives one place higher than their last hit “What Can You Do For Me” peaked. 79-PEBnSZlc Written allegedly about Madonna, “Midlife Crisis” marks a new high point in the career of Faith No More who crash straight in at No 10 (15,000). Their previous best was 1990’s “From Out Of Nowhere” (No 23) but with their fourth album out this month it seems that Faith No More’s time has come in the UK, Madonna’s thoughts on the single are still unknown…. U8b88US-6ts Kris Kross move 4-2 selling 51,000 in the process, that’s a new best for the runner up spot this year and as often as not good enough to be No 1, and Ugly Kid Joe leap 5-3 (28,000) as “Wayne’s World” does wonders at the cinema to assist. Guns N Roses fall 2-4 (27,000) and just fend off two climbers, Richard Marx 10-5 (22,000) and the Cure 8-6 (22,000), meanwhile SL2 hold at No 7 (21,000) and En Vogue tumble 6-8 (21,000). 1- PLEASE DON’T GO/ GAME BOY- KWS (57,000) 2- JUMP- Kris Kross (51,000) 3- EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU- Ugly Kid Joe (28,000) 4- KNOCKIN ON HEAVEN’S DOOR- Guns N Roses (27,000) 5- HAZARD- Richard Marx (22,000) 6- FRIDAY, I’M IN LOVE- The Cure (22,000) 7- ON A RAGGA TIP- SL2 (21,000) 8- MY LOVIN- En Vogue (21,000) 9- SOMETHING GOOD- Utah Saints (16,000) 10- MIDLIFE CRISIS- Faith No More (15,000)
February 25, 20223 yr Author 13TH JUNE For the first time in 1992 we have a new entry at the top position! Long standing ABBA fans Vince Clarke and Andy Bell of Erasure first covered some of their songs in live concerts with plans to do an album of covers. The idea was scrapped in favour of an EP and today “Abba-Esque” debuts at No 1 on an amazing sale of 91,000 copies marking a 1992 high! The EP includes their versions of “SOS”, “Voulez Vous”, “Take A Chance On Me” and “Lay All Your Love On Me” though it seems that the third track is getting the lion’s share of the attention at present though the group have recorded promo’s for all four tracks. It is Erasure’s first chart topper though 12th top 10 single and makes up for both “Sometimes” and “Stop” making No 2 in the 80s. Q9mxwiRSVvs There are three new entries in total in the top 10 raising the total number of chart entries in the top tier to 32 for the year and indicates we will be heading for a new record by the time the year ends. George Michael is up next with “Too Funky”, Michael, as you may know, has fallen out with his record label and in protest is releasing records for charity whilst the issues are resolved, this single was earmarked for “Listen Without Prejudice Vol 2” but that has now been apparently scrapped in view of the fall out with Michael instead lending a few songs to the AIDS compilation “Red Hot & Dance” including this one. The song samples Jocelyn Brown’s “Somebody Else’s Guy” as well as audio clips from the film “The Graduate” and the TV show “Tony Hancock Show” and comes with another installment in his now famed supermodel filled promo series, indeed Channel 4 screened a “making of” late at night to assist with sales, it smashes in at No 4 (40,000) to become his biggest hit since “Faith” in 1987. JQ2DVwSVIIo Michael’s last solo chart topper came six years ago when “A Different Corner” went all the way, it was also the last time Nick Berry scored a chart hit as “Every Loser Wins” similarly went to No 1, and he’s also back this week six years later with is follow up! He plucked his first single from the TV show he starred in at the time “Eastenders” and he’s done the same thing again though he’s now on ITV playing PC Nick Rowen in “Heartbeat” and he also sings the theme tune, a cover of the same name originally done by Buddy Holly. The highest peaking version was however done by Showaddywaddy in 1975 who made No 7, a position equaled immediately by Berry who sold 25,000 last week- can he go all the way again? jJy5xFenpVQ If sales were press coverage then this next lot would already have had a chart topper but Take That have been the next “big thing” according to teen mags for the last 6 months without having the sales to back it. Their first three singles peaked at No’s 82, 38, and 47 despite some risqué video’s and photo shoots but the work seems to have finally paid off with “It Only Takes A Minute” rising 16-9 (22,000). It’s a song with an odd history, originally by Tavares it made No 10 in the US but wasn’t released in the UK leaving Jonathan King to release a cover under the moniker 100 Ton & A Feather which peaked at No 9 in 1975, the Tavares version was finally released in 1986 only making No 46. The boys are clearly photogenic and it looks like they may finally justify all that promotion, expect the debut album in a few months. kavVV66RDSY Utah Saints are the only other act in the ten to have a good week as they climb 9-6 (28,000). KWS drop 1-2 (43,000) and may clear the 400,000 mark next week, and Kris Kross are still No 1 in the US for an 8th week but slide 2-3 (43,000) here and won’t now make it to the top here. Richard Marx holds at No 5 (35,000) as he absorbs those high new entries and with a 60% sales hike of its own even though his album is re-promoted and re-enters at No 7! Ugly Kid Joe drop 3-8 (25,000) as their album debuts at No 9, and Guns N Roses fall 4-10 (19,000). 1- ABBA-ESQUE EP- Erasure (91,000) 2- PLEASE DON’T GO/ GAME BOY- KWS (43,000) 3- JUMP- Kris Kross (43,000) 4- TOO FUNKY- George Michael (40,000) 5- HAZARD- Richard Marx (35,000) 6- SOMETHING GOOD- Utah Saints (28,000) 7- HEARTBEAT- Nick Berry (25,000) 8- EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU- Ugly Kid Joe (25,000) 9- IT ONLY TAKES A MINUTE- Take That (22,000) 10- KNOCKIN ON HEAVEN’S DOOR- Guns N Roses (19,000)
February 25, 20223 yr Author 20TH JUNE A rather more static chart this week accounted for in part by TOTP not being aired until Saturday. Erasure easily hold the top spot though their sales are off 10,000 to 81,000, it easily fended off Nick Berry who nevertheless improves 7-2 (35,000) and could prove a threat in the next few weeks still, KWS complete the top 3 as they slip again 2-3 (31,000) and are now about 80,000 away from becoming the year’s biggest selling single. L-d4J3YUQmU Outside the top 3 there is plenty of movement although just one new hit, Richard Marx advances 5-4 (30,000) though sales wise he seems a spent force and Take That nudge 9-8 (20,000) whilst Utah Saints are stuck in the groove at No 6 (27,000). Heading south are George Michael 4-5 (27,000) who fades as quickly as he arrived, Kris Kross drop 3-7 (26,000) and Ugly Kid Joe slip 8-9 (19,000) That new hit is from Elton John who scores his 20th top 10 single with “The One”. It’s the lead track from his new album of the same name which is his 23rd! album which is out this week and may impede further advance for the single, for now it inches 11-10 (15,000). 6u_GpgfR-Ww 1- ABBA-ESQUE EP- Erasure (81,000) 2- HEARTBEAT- Nick Berry (35,000) 3- PLEASE DON’T GO/ GAME BOY- KWS (31,000) 4- HAZARD- Richard Marx (30,000) 5- TOO FUNKY- George Michael (27,000) 6- SOMETHING GOOD- Utah Saints (27,000) 7- JUMP- Kris Kross (26,000) 8- IT ONLY TAKES A MINUTE- Take That (20,000) 9- EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU- Ugly Kid Joe (19,000) 10- THE ONE- Elton John (15,000)
February 25, 20223 yr I was obsessed with Erasure at this time and I’m 100% certain that it was Lay All Your Love On Me that was the initial success from the EP. It was only after the TOTP performance and video aired that it shifted to Take a Chance On Me. Although I can remember all of the tracks getting radio play which was rare at the time.
February 25, 20223 yr didn't know Erasure had had such high sales for the Abba EP. Not many big favs in the top 10, all ok but nothing wow.
February 25, 20223 yr I watched one of the latest episodes on BBC Four with my parents. :) They liked the Richard Marx track and they liked Lionel Ritchie's song My Destiny which also featured in the episode. I like both those songs too. They quite liked The Orb - Blue Room but were perplexed about the Utah Saints' track. I think Something Good is really good and makes excellent use of the sample, way better than What can You Do For Me? which is a bit slow and ponderous for my tastes. Also way better than the 2008 remix of Something Good as the rave synths in the 1992 version really make the track I think! Also Nick Berry's version of Heartbeat is way better than his 1986 #1 Every Loser Wins in my opinion! It Only Takes A Minute by Take That does use quite a lot of rave synths in its production - one of the first times in the 90s that a pop group has really used rave influences and of course East 17 would follow suit with their rave influenced debut hit later in 1992. February 25, 20223 yr The ABBA-esque EP is By far the best number 1 of 1992! Plus Hazard is a beautiful piece of storytelling.
February 25, 20223 yr Also, I adore Sophie B Hawkins Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover - no idea it was as old as 1992! I guess I thought it was later especially as her next hit, As I Lay Me Down, was 1995.
February 25, 20223 yr 'Something Good' is my highlight from those updates  I have 'Cloudbusting' in my 80s playlist, 'Something Good' in 90s and 'Something Good '08' in 00s  I'd heard about that 'Blue Room' TOTP performance from The Orb featuring them playing a chess-like game for the whole duration and now I've finally seen it! Tune :music:
February 25, 20223 yr Sophie B Hawkins is great I also enjoyed her other big hit Right Beside You in 1994.
February 25, 20223 yr Sophie B Hawkins is great I also enjoyed her other big hit Right Beside You in 1994. 'Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover' is quite good but 'Right beside You' I much prefer, one of the best songs of 1994 imo.
February 26, 20223 yr The ABBA-esque EP is By far the best number 1 of 1992! Plus Hazard is a beautiful piece of storytelling. As a huge fan of this era of Erasure I would put Stay and Rythm is a Dancer ahead of it.
