Sergio Kitchens (born 1993), used to practice what he and his friends called “six-month runs”: cut all extraneous spending for six months and save, save, save. The discipline and deferred gratification served him well: After spending his late teens and early twenties quietly exploring his style and releasing only one mixtape, Gunna broke big in 2016 with a feature on Young Thug’s “Floyd Mayweather”—a cosign that helped him bypass the hustle and made him one of the most sought-after new voices in the game. Later that year, Thug’s YSL label released the first of his multi-part Drip Season series, which synthesized his influences into an airy trap sound: smooth and mellow, blending spacious beats with a relaxed, highly melodic delivery and off-the-cuff humor. Between a couple more seasons of Drip and features with Travis Scott (“Yosemite”) and Metro Boomin (“Space Cadet”), Gunna also forged a productive collaboration with Atlanta rapper Lil Baby, releasing Drip Harder in late 2018. The pairing was anointed GOAT status from a sometime GOAT himself, Future, with whom Gunna also featured on “Unicorn Purp.” Like Thug, Gunna has a thing for fashion; “drip” is his slang for personal style. “The salesmen that know me in Barneys say I smell like Biscotti mixed with Creed,” he raps on “Idk Why,” from his official 2019 debut album, Drip or Drown 2. - Apple Music Future There’s a good anecdote that Future recounted in an interview—about getting into an argument with a guy who was worried about one of the Atlanta rapper’s engineers. The engineer hadn’t left the studio in a week. Had he even eaten? Don’t worry, Future said—he himself hadn’t left in a week, either, and someone was bringing in Wendy’s from up the block. Barely a season goes by without new music from the rapper born Nayvadius Wilburn (in 1983)—whether it’s a mixtape, solo album, or collaborative project (with Drake, with Gucci Mane, with the producer Zaytoven). But prolific isn’t the half of it. Druggy, raw, slick, and surreal, Future’s sound—crystallized on highlights like 2014’s Honest, 2015’s DS2, and 2017’s HNDRXX—has helped redefine 2010s street rap as something strange and almost avant-garde: trap as modern psychedelia. Not that it isn’t melodic too. Like fellow Atlantan and collaborator Young Thug, Future has a way of bending his voice (often using Auto-Tune) into soulful, often sad shapes, half-rapped and half-sung—the sound of a crooner stuck in space. “The biggest thing is just being yourself all the time,” he told Beats 1 host Zane Lowe in early 2017. “When you try and be yourself all the time, everyone’s not gonna like it. But you gotta wake up with that person. At the end of the day, you can be able to look at the person and be like, You know what, I know I’m being myself; I’m not being anyone else. And that’s the greatest thing about this: It’s me being myself.” - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History Gunna 2018 28 Drip Too Hard (Lil Baby & Gunna) -1- 2018 46 Never Recover (Lil Baby, Gunna & Drake) -AT- 2018 38 Broken Homes (The Plug presents Nafe Smallz, M Huncho & Gunna) 2019 52 Hot (Young Thug feat. He got his start in the mid-’80s, when the skeletal sounds of Belgian new beat ruled Holland’s clubs, but it was trance—sleeker and more emotive—that moved him. His first proper DJ mix , 1997’s Magik One (First Flight), showcases his signature style in dreamy synth melodies drawn out above tough but streamlined drum grooves. As trance’s foremost ambassador, he pioneered stadium raving with solo DJ concerts in sports arenas; in 2004, he played for millions at the Summer Olympics opening ceremony in Athens. And his Club Life weekly radio show and mix series, one of trance’s premier global platforms, became synonymous with the genre itself. But you don’t become the world’s No. 1 DJ by sitting still. By 2011’s Club Life: Volume One Las Vegas, Tiësto was following through on a shift that had begun with his 2009 album, Kaleidoscope, a blend of high-energy trance and airy pop melodies that heralded the next big rave revolution: EDM. With 2014’s A Town Called Paradise, he made good on EDM’s anything-goes promise with a collection encompassing soaring toplines, massive drops, and other big-room thrills without turning his back on the aching melodies that made his name. As the decade drew to a close, playful collabs with a new generation of producers who had come up in his wake—The Chainsmokers, Oliver Heldens, DJ Snake, Hardwell—only served to confirm his versatility and cement his legacy. - Apple Music Ava Max Before the thumping club hit "Sweet but Psycho" shot up charts around the world in 2018, Albanian-American artist Ava Max almost quit the music industry: "I was like, if this doesn't do it, then I think I'm going to have to pick another career, because I've been at this for 15 years," she told Apple Music. But her perseverance finally paid off thanks to her slinky hooks and sweet-salty delivery that can both sting and seduce with just one syllable. Born Amanda Koci in 1994, the singer/songwriter grew up in Wisconsin and Virginia before trying her hand in L.A., first at age 14 and then again at 17. She spent the next several years handing out demos and getting rejected by a number of labels and producers. But in 2014, she met producer/songwriter Cirkut, who helped her find her voice. She took on the stage name Ava Max—to honor both feminine and masculine qualities—and solidified the transformation with her asymmetrical "Max Cut" hairstyle. This theme of dichotomy extends into her music, with the cheeky feminist twist of "Sweet but Psycho" and then her 2020 full-length debut, Heaven & Hell. The concept album—split between bright, Gaga-esque disco anthems like "Kings & Queens" and the darker dance-pop fizz of "Salt"—conveys two powerful messages: be yourself and don't give up. "I would not be talking about female empowerment ... or having this much of a voice," she said, "if I didn't go through those obstacles." - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History Tiësto 1999 97 Theme From Norefjell (DJ Tiësto) -NAS- 2001 56 Flight 643 (DJ Tiësto) -1- 2001 22 Suburban Train/Urban Train (DJ Tiësto) -2- 2002 25 Lethal Industry (DJ Tiësto) -3- 2002 36 643 (Love's On Fire) (DJ Tiësto feat. On their 2014 debut, Zaba, the Oxford quartet aligned themselves with a storied lineage of abstract alt-rock—the moody atmospheres of Radiohead, the tropical textures of Animal Collective—but in Dave Bayley, Glass Animals possess an uncommonly smooth singer who could mould those left-field influences into sultry, R&B-flavoured pop songs. While the album made them indie darlings, it also earned the group admirers beyond the typical NME reader—the 2015 single “Lose Control” saw them team up with Brooklyn MC Joey Bada$$ for a trippy rap track. That sense of anything-goes openness fully flourished on 2016’s How to Be a Human Being, whose procession of freaky, funky anthems and synth-smeared slow jams earned Glass Animals their first Mercury Prize nomination. But after drummer Joe Seaward was nearly killed in a 2018 cycling accident, Glass Animals dialled down the eccentricity for 2020’s Dreamland, a more intimate record that further harmonized the art-rock/club-pop dialectic at the heart of their music. Speaking about the single “Your Love (Déjà Vu)” to Apple Music, Hayley said, “The idea was to take my favourite '90s producers like Timbaland and The Neptunes and the way they used samples, yet record a lot of those sounds in the way The Beatles or Beach Boys might’ve done it... and then taking Beatles and Beach Boys sounds and resampling them as [those producers] might’ve done.” That Dreamland cracked the Top 10 in both the UK and US is a testament to Glass Animals’ gift for melding different styles and eras into the sound of now. - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History 2020 05 Heat Waves -1- MILLIONAIRE 0 x #1 | 1 x Top 5 | 1 x Top 10 | 1 x Top 20 | 1 x Top 40 | 1 x Top 100 Social Media Glass Animals http://i.imgur.com/1SERq1f.png --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 33 | 21 | 2nd week Central Cee Retail Therapy 2nd single from 23 Released: 7th January 2022 Label: Central Cee Chart Statistics NE (20/01/2022) | 21-33 Sales: 10k+ Certification: - Status: Standard Chart Ratio __ Sales 28 Audio Streaming 08 Video Streaming Video G1CbX1k9m5Q Biography Shepherd's Bush-based Central Cee made his first steps in music toward the end of the 2010s, debuting with 2017's Auto-Tune-laced "Over You." His early career was characterized by the D-Block Europe-esque melodic trap of the era, with Cee opting for bouncy instrumentals and Auto-Tune-driven melodies on tracks like "TRANSITION" and "JUGG." However, in 2020 the rapper found himself drawn to a different style entirely -- U.K. drill. Kicking off the year with the guitar-laden "Day in the Life," Cee's skating flows proved a natural match for the genre's faster-paced sonics, which he continued to develop with the gritty "Molly" and a bold showing on Kenny Allstar's Mad About Bars. All prior successes were eclipsed in October of that year, though, when Cee released his breakout hit, "Loading." Landing at number 19 on the U.K. charts, the track secured the rapper his first Top 40 hit with its inventive drill production, active flows, and a magnetic performance on the mic. This success followed him into early 2021: January's "Pinging (6 Figures)" offered a more traditional take on drill, while February's "Commitment Issues" secured Cee a number nine spot on the U.K. charts. His debut mixtape, Wild West, arrived that March. Debuting at number two in the U.K., the tape expanded Cee's vivid drill sound with forward-thinking production and a wider range of narratives. - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History 2020 19 Loading -2- 2021 44 Pinging (6 Figures) -3- 2021 09 Commitment Issues -4- 2021 44 Day In The Life -1- 2021 16 6 For 6 -5- 2021 62 The Great Escape (Blanco & Central Cee) 2021 17 Meant To Be (Stay Flee Get Lizzy, Fredo & Central Cee) 2021 34 Little Bit Of This -NAS- 2021 04 Obsessed With You -1- 2021 07 Overseas (D-Block Europe feat. January 21, 20224 yr Author 32 | | 1st week The Game and Kanye West Eazy Non-album single Released: 16th January 2022 Label: 100 Entertainment Chart Statistics NE (27/01/2022) | 32 Sales: - Certification: - Status: Standard Chart Ratio TBA Sales TBA Audio Streaming TBA Video Streaming Video MiLxNzYDFco Biography The Game Entering the gangsta rap scene when the West Coast was losing the dominance it had enjoyed in the early '90s, The Game revived his South Central L.A. 'hood—and proved that it is absolutely possible to become commercially successful without sacrificing an ounce of street cred. Born Jayceon Terrell Taylor in Compton in 1979, he spent a chunk of his youth in foster care and made a community for himself in the city's gangs. He and his brother, Big Fase, studied the work of their rap forebears—Nas, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z—and a mixtape they released in 2002 found its way to Dre himself, who signed The Game to Aftermath Entertainment in 2003 and slotted him with 50 Cent's G-Unit Records. The Game's 2005 debut, The Documentary, proudly extolled West Coast gang culture while showcasing chameleonic flows influenced by rap greats. A deeply felt feud with 50 Cent led to his exit from Aftermath, and Game then launched a barrage of snarling diss tracks aimed at his former mentors before his 2006 sophomore LP, Doctor's Advocate. He was just fine on his own, thanks to his nothing-to-prove attitude and impressive songwriting, spitting bars of brash vulnerability and vivid imagery of his gritty roots over the production of both A-list and up-and-coming beatmakers. His intensity never flagged all the way up through 2019, when he released what he said would be his final album, the reflective Born 2 Rap. Dr. Dre's protegé took his bow as a West Coast OG, the head of his own label (Prolific), a collaborator with Ed Sheeran, and an improbable advocate for rappers laying beefs and judgment aside. And by cosigning L.A.’s newcomers while pausing his career to devote himself to his family, he still carries the torch for the coast. - Apple Music Kanye West Few artists have had as deep an impact on pop culture as Kanye West. Raised in Chicago by his mother, an English professor, West (born in 1977) initially studied to be a painter while making beats on the side—a multidisciplinary drive that came to mark his career. After contributing production to a series of increasingly high-profile projects (including work with Foxy Brown and the Mase-fronted Harlem World), West broke through in 2001 with his work on JAY-Z’s The Blueprint, producing and cowriting some of the album’s biggest songs (“Izzo [H.O.V.A.]”, “Takeover”). His chopped-and-pitched, sample-heavy “chipmunk soul” sound would define rap for years after. He launched his MC career with 2004’s The College Dropout and hasn’t looked back, releasing a string of groundbreaking—and often self-contradicting—albums, each of them a pacesetter for the culture around it. From the baroque grandeur of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy to the punk fragments of Yeezus, from the social commentary of The College Dropout to the confessional summits of 808s & Heartbreak, West has always been at the leading edge, tirelessly expanding his scope and sound—and shifting everyone else’s playing field in the process. Much of that comes from his gift for listening, for orchestrating: Over the course of his career, he has absorbed sounds and styles from the underground—whether Chicago drill, UK bass music, or Bon Iver’s postmodern folk—and reimagined them, changing the course of the mainstream along the way. An outspoken figure (to say the least), West has shattered countless stereotypes about who rappers are and what they do, taking stances against homophobia and gangster posturing, offering multidimensional portraits of women and some bracingly reductive ones, advancing social causes one minute and declaring himself a god the next, controversially getting the attention of not one but three sitting presidents, and playing both the face and the heel. His vision hasn’t stopped at music. Always interested in fashion, West has designed for Nike, Louis Vuitton and Adidas, as well as his own Yeezy Season line, reconciling the utility of streetwear with the playful tangents of haute couture. He’s also dabbled in sculpture (the infamous silicone figures from 2016’s “Famous” video), as well as announced his intention to move into architecture and prefabricated home design (Yeezy Home). Even when his experiments don’t quite land (in 2018, he claimed he was writing a philosophy book in real time on Twitter), there’s an ambition—and audacity—in West’s work that feels hard to deny. What we’re left with isn’t just a strong back catalogue, but a seismic shift: the evolution of hip-hop into high art. - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History The Game 2005 05 How We Do (feat. 50 Cent) -1- 2005 04 Hate It Or Love It (feat. 50 Cent) -2- 2005 08 Dreams -3- 2005 33 Playa's Only (R.
