Ah I love DL. Favourite number 1 of the year. Still love it now.

I agree though that in hindsight it definitely matched well to the mood of that moment in time.

I suppose that poses the :gino: question would it have stayed at #1 as long as it did if we never had that winter lockdown?

Wellerman was very close in the last of its 9 weeks so it could perhaps have been cut a bit short

18/03 | 38,429 | Olivia Rodrigo - drivers license (37,174)

18/03 | 37,687 | Nathan Evans, 220 Kid & Billen Ted - Wellerman

I think it may well have had a week or two less. But who knows.

When I think about that song, I get a vivid memory of it on in the background while I was wfh. Bittersweet and all that.

I echo the thoughts of others. My favourite Lil Nas X track is ‘Industry Baby’ the production is great in that. ‘Montero’ is just boring for me although I understand the social message people liked.

Probably like the upbeat ‘Good For You’ more than ‘Drivers Licence’ but both are 6/10 moments for me!

Adele’s comeback ballad, in which she asks her son to forgive her divorce, broke daily and weekly streaming records on both Spotify and Amazon and achieved the highest single week chart sales for anything since “Shape of You”.

It only attracted 4 sets of maximum points here, the fewest of any song in the top 6, but 42 of 54 voters ranked it in their top half. Of course it’s only her 3rd Number One but they have all been well regarded. Her previous Number Ones, “Someone Like You” and “Hello”, were both ranked the 2nd best Number Ones of their respective years in the recent Best Number One of the 2010s poll.

Biography

Dozens of British artists share Adele’s origins—BRIT School, MySpace, pop stardom—but it takes rare talent to have your voice declared timeless in your career’s first flush. Adele honed hers as a kid in her North London bedroom, imitating Etta James every night for an hour. But as soon as she made her televised debut in 2007 (on Later...With Jools Holland), all potential comparisons evaporated: This girl with the whopping hoop earrings and a pub landlady’s brashness had something unique. Heartbreak, indignation, and regret all found a natural home in her regal mezzo-soprano, the instrument that powered her 2008 debut album, 19, and took influence from the American South on 2011’s 21. Both of these albums broke records for breaking records, and made a subsequent operation on Adele’s vocal cords a matter of global import. She recovered immaculately—for proof, watch her comeback performance of “Rolling in the Deep” at the 2012 Grammys—and it took just one word to reintroduce her in 2015. “Hello,” she sang during an X Factor ad break, unveiling her world-conquering single and third album, 25, in the process. Like its predecessors, 25 upended 21st-century metrics and made Adele the first artist to earn the top-selling album of a calendar year three times. She’s now a mother, and her twenties are behind her. But if any voice were ever capable of carrying its owner into maturity, it’s hers. - Apple Music

'Easy On Me' registering so many streams in the U.K. on its first full day of availability was a moment *.*

Not a top tier Adele single for me but a pretty good comeback and her vocals are incredible on it.

Aw, that's my fave gone. I still haven't got around to hearing Adele's album (oops I'll get to it one day x) but 'Easy On Me' was a great lead single and I think it will age a lot better for me than 'Hello' did.

Rooting for Olivia to win out of the remaining 3 then, Elton would be a fine winner too.

I echo the thoughts of others. My favourite Lil Nas X track is ‘Industry Baby’ the production is great in that. ‘Montero’ is just boring for me although I understand the social message people liked.

Never got into 'Montero' or 'Old Time Road' at all - both left me cold. But 'Industry Baby' was fanatastic - reminded me of the excellent J Cole track 'Middle Child'

Don't think 'Easy on Me' deserved to be higher than DL. Just a bit dull.

Sounds about right for Easy on Me, not bad but not amazing either

doesn't help its been overplayed to death

Little Mix getting a Number One in 2021 was probably not something anyone would have predicted in 2020 (albeit less unexpected than Elton getting 3 Number Ones in 2021). The first two singles from the “Confetti” album had #9 and #15 peaks, and when “Sweet Melody” began its run 8-12 it certainly didn’t look like it would turn into a January chart topper. However, the song really grew and emerged as the frontrunner in the clear-out after Christmas 2020.

This picked up maximum points from 10 voters, and was challenging for the lead through most of the voting. It actually fell back quite a bit as the last few votes came in and almost lost its Top 3 placing. Nonetheless it remains a forum favourite for sure.

Tomorrow either Olivia or Elton & Dua will be crowned the winner(s)!

Biography

Little Mix are a British girl group formed in 2011 during the eighth series of the British version of The X Factor. The group is composed of Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards and Leigh-Anne Pinnock; former member Jesy Nelson left the group in 2020 due to mental health issues. The first group to win The X Factor, they signed with Simon Cowell's record label Syco Music and released a cover of Damien Rice's "Cannonball" as their winner's single, which debuted atop the UK Singles Chart upon release. The group are known for their strong vocals and signature harmonies, as well as their representative songs about female empowerment and unity.

Being one of the most successful acts to emerge from The X Factor, the group has since earned three more UK number-one singles: "Wings" in 2012, "Black Magic" in 2015 and "Shout Out to My Ex" in 2016. Each of their albums, DNA (2012), Salute (2013), Get Weird (2015), Glory Days (2016), LM5 (2018) and Confetti (2020), have peaked in the top five of the UK Albums Chart, with four of the albums certified platinum to 3x platinum by BPI. Notably, their fourth album, Glory Days, became the longest-reigning girl group number one album since the Spice Girls' debut album 20 years earlier, and the highest first week UK album sales for a girl band since 1997. Throughout their career, the group has sold over 50 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling girl groups of all time.

Winning the Brit Award for Song of the Year with "Shout Out to My Ex" in 2017 and the Brit Award for British Video of the Year for "Woman Like Me" in 2019, they have also received four MTV Europe Music Awards, two Teen Choice Awards, five Global Awards and nine Brit Award nominations. Their Glory Days Tour and Get Weird Tour are the fifth and eighth highest-grossing tour for a girl group of all time, respectively, with the latter being the biggest-selling UK arena tour of 2016. As of August 2018, Little Mix have four platinum certified albums and sixteen certified singles in the UK. In the media, Little Mix has appeared on Debrett's 2017 list of the most influential people in the UK, Forbes' 30 under 30 list in 2018, on the Sunday Times Young Rich List for four consecutive years; 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020. – Wikipedia

Hooray xx

Appreciate that it was a big moment for them for it to go to #1 but I have never been a fan of the song at all unfortunately. Actually haven't really been a fan of most of their #1s ('Wings' is the only one I particularly like), kind of similar to Katy Perry, I like plenty of songs by both artists but their #1s are largely not reflective of their best songs imo.

really hope it's Good 4 U rather than the remix of the old mediocre Elton John song :)

Sorry - I’m going to keep you on the edge of your seat 1 day longer and reveal the winner tomorrow. :D
Aww 'Sweet Melody' was my favourite of the three remaining - although all are in the top half of my votes. It felt like a long old wait for 'Sweet Melody' to get to the top of the chart, first stuck behind 'positions' for 6 weeks, then blocked by Christmas songs - but it was pleasing that it eventually got its moment. Great song and video, quite easily my favourite LM #1 now.
Rooting for 'Good 4 U' to emerge victorious - the Elton/Dua collab is fine but doesn't deserve to be voted the best number one of the year.
