Not just quality but also variety. That's what bugs me the most about the current top 40, it's all so samey. I wish there was a more varied selection of genres represented like there used to be :(

Do people think this is the worst period ever or in your lifetimes for the UK chart? I also agree about the lack of variety by the way.

There isn't as much variety as there was in the pre-digital era obviously (realistically we're never going back to that level) but surely the charts have been more varied in the last few years (i.e. since the rise of TikTok) than they had been at any previous point in the digital era?

 

The absolute worst / least interesting time for the charts imo was around 2016-17.

To be fair those 1991 songs weren’t all from the same weekly chart, but from the year as a whole as it was The Story of 1991 that threw up all of those entries.

 

Still, I definitely agree with the point about diversity, but they’re probably for me the most diverse at the moment since probably 2007, when physical sales were really dying out alongside the ‘landfill indie’ era ending and downloads were growing.

 

2010-12 was the ‘club banger era’ when the charts were largely closed to anything not generic sounding and about ‘the club’ - Adele and some other notable examples aside - and 2015-17 was so dull, slow and dominated by stuff that sounded curated to within an inch of its life for getting onto Spotify playlists. There’s still plenty of that stuff about but the influence of TikTok has helped to shake things up a lot. Plus some genres, like pop punk, have had a resurgence. Probably partly driven by TikTok too but it’s nice to see it popular with Gen Z.

Agreed, that period really was hell to put it frankly. 2008 wasn't exactly wonderful either.

 

At least it's improved remarkably since the lull of 16/17 though.
