Ones I think you've missed off:

Lita Roza - (How Much Is) That Doggie In The Window

Scaffold - Lily The Pink

Archies - Sugar Sugar

Rolf Harris - Two Little Boys

Benny Hill - Ernie (The Fastest Milkman In The West)

Lieutenant Pigeon - Mouldy Old Dough

Billy Connolly - D.I.V.O.R.C.E.

Brotherhood Of Man - Save Your Kisses For Me

Wurzels - Combine Harvester (Brand New Key)

Thanks for the suggestions! We’ve added “Divorce”. See earlier replies on “Mouldy Old Dough” and “Two Little Boys”. We didn’t want to start including comedy songs by default and “Ernie” is probably one of the better crafted ones. The others are at least catchy.

Aww Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep isn't that bad, i'd say Mouldy Old Dough was worse. I actually think Dustman has a little charm about it as well.

I think Two Little Boys is a load of old crap but can understand the reasons for not wanting to put that or Glitter into a poll. That Lily The Pink song is absolute tosh as is Matchstalk Cats And Dogs. Plus anything by the Osmonds, the only decent thing i've heard by any of them was Crazy Horses and that wasn't a #1. Can't think of anything else that isn't already in the OP.

In terms of Glitter at least, I don’t think any of his songs are truly bad enough purely from a musical stand point to be in the shortlist. The contribution of the Glitter Band alone takes them above/below the threshold. Same for Two Little Boys really - solely in terms of music, it’s just a gentle little ballad - I don’t think it’s awful enough to be included.

Glitter and Harris used to get covers and kudos before the court cases for many people rewrote their childhoods, but I'm not letting the behaviour of old men ruin my fond memories of old pop records. I love Two Little Boys and other Rolf records, and Glitter records were terrific Mike Leander songs and productions, along with the terrific backing of the Glitter Band. Paul Gadd would have been nothing without Mike Leander & the boys, so I give them the credit these days, not the egotistical frontman. Pity we can't re-label them to The Glitter Band featuring an A.Nonymous....

In addition to some of those already mentioned, what about Gary Glitter - I Love You Love Me Love - out of his 3 #1s I think that one should be added to the list, the worst of his #1s I think, because of its plodding and rambling chorus. Mind you his other two #1s have even worse song titles with hindsight.

My fave record of his and a his biggest hit and a million-seller.

I wasn't familiar with any of them before knowing of the misdeeds of the artists involved so that may not help but I don't think the Rolf song and at least 2/3 of the Glitter songs have much in the way of musical merit to them regardless. ('I'm The Leader Of The Gang (I Am!)' is maybe slightly better than the others as a song)

Rod Stewart - D’you Think I’m Sexy or whatever it’s called is vile and needs to be included

Agreed - it’s going on! Not sure why we omitted it in the first place actually.

I’ve made 1 more addition to this list to bring it up to 25 - Lee Marvin’s Wand’rin’ Star. I actually really like it but it’s certainly an unusual vocal style!

Thanks for all the comments in these threads! All the Heats covering the pre 00s period and more are now live in the UK Charts forum.

Please do vote - in all rounds but particularly in the pre 80s one. I know it’s going to be more unfamiliar than the others for most of us but the playlist is only about 90 minutes of music. I’d happily host a listen-through session if some people are interested, even if it’s only a couple - just let me know. It won’t be the most pleasurable of listens but should be interesting and amusing in places. :)
