I rankeded all the songs twice, the songs I like and what I think will do well. I did top ten and and five bubling under and my top eight is the top here so if I would have voted based on on what I think will make top ten and not what I like i would have gotten all the songs right bar one. The song that finished ninth, well, I have never even heard of that so that sure was a song that came from nowhere here.

Didn’t this do well. Picking up four 30 pointers from JulianT, Mack, Jimwatts, and Daan and another 4 voters who put it in their top 10. A seasonal perennial now it is also our 2nd favourite No 2 of 1987.

Reckon that could have been top 5 if this was run in December :kink: still top 10 is strong going nonetheless!

The opening piano of FONY gets me every time I hear it for the first time each Christmas.

Homophobic slur alert. It is, despite what anyone else may say and on this basis I now boycott it.

0 points from me!

I agree completely Jester - I gave it 7 because it’s good song - but it’s just used every year as an excuse for straight people to scream the f word at the top of their lungs. Disgusting.

Fairytale Of New York is brilliant imo.

I'm guessing Queen will be the next one to leave.

As if having the same debate about the FONY lyrics every December wasn’t bad enough we’re now having it in June. Let’s just say that I’ve never met any of these straight people who are eagerly awaiting their annual chance to scream the F-word.

Fairytale Of New York is everything that most Christmas records aren’t. It’s authentic, traditional, profound, sad, hopeful, and properly captures the love-hate nature of many real relationships. I thought about it for a while and realised I couldn’t give my 30 to anything else.

Excellently put Julian.

Yes as a ‘straight’ person that’s exactly why I love the song

57 points between 9th and 8th is a big jump. It's unfortunate when there are a few who try to ruin good things for their own ends, but that doesn't mean those things need to be judged at their level. Fairytale Of New York evokes many things for me: the joy of the Christmas season, reflection on the passage of time and, even in the face of dreams turned sour, eternal hopefulness. With the backdrop of NYC and beautiful instrumentation too.

My top 9 are all gone now, so I'll root for anything but Take On Me to win, just because that seems to be the most predictable outcome.

Here’s 1984’s highest placed No 2- it got stuck behind the million selling Frankie Phenomenon.
