X (Twitter) is banned in Brazil

An absolute tragedy. Only a straight man could have let this happen

Well I do like how Elon won’t cower to governments we shall see who wins the long game

Wow, that is quite the move! I'm not sure how I feel about it, part of me supports a ban in the UK too but then the other part of me doesn't.

I left Twitter ages ago anyway it's an absolute cesspit so it wouldn't affect me if it were banned.

I quite enjoy how governments won’t cower to or put up with Musk if I’m honest, but you do you.

Apparently the mass migration is going to Bluesky which I'm trying to get a hang of it but the algorithm is not as good as Twitter atm  I also saw a lot of Stan Twitter or pop culture accounts being forced to shut down because of the ban

Well it’s generally one way, what could Elon be asking from governments exactly. If you look at this it’s an example of how most social media was run before Elon they would do whatever a government asked. You need a space where that doesn’t happen. The recent arrest of the telegram owner is pretty ugly too, that’s one of the most impressive guys you’ll see and they’re trying to punish him because he wouldn’t let the FBI backdoor his service. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czxlpjlgdzjo.amp

Sounds all fine and dandy without the context of what Brazil is asking and Elon is refusing. It's about banning the anti-democratic forces behind the attempted Bolsonaro election denial and coup, and more broadly allowing for the spread of misinformation, which may become illegal in Brazil.

the amount of nazis on that app at the moment makes my skin crawl

Omg I found this news out from Ellie Goulding!!!!!

Ellie Goulding stuns as she can’t believe Twitter is banned in Brazil.

“Where the f*** are they going?” she stuns

But of course Elon would turn the government's requests down. We all now know he bought Twitter to deprive the left of a platform and to elevate right wing voiced across the world.

I keep hearing of Threads!? I'm stepping back from social media tbh, even Facebook utterly does my nut in. These sites just highlight how many racists, homophobic, transphobic, sexist, thick ugly horrible people are out there.

I'm only on Instagram (and Reddit) presently but Threads seems okay. I say that, it might have the same problem as Twitter.

I use Instagram, pretty pictures and I don't click on the comments!

Threads is also another choice but it connects with your personal real life a bit more if you see what I mean so I'm getting more of my diaspora and where I was originally from rather than pop culture content which is why those stan Twitter accounts do not migrate to Threads but Bluesky instead (like Twitter which doesn't attach to your personal accounts)

also the amount of AI-generated pretty boy content is worrying on Threads

😬

Apparently, many X (Twitter) artists/illustrators migrated to BlueSky because of the new X policy set by Elon Musk about the training AIs and blocked accounts.

With this clear reasoning, I'm pretty sure it won't be the 2nd Instagram Thread, at least for freelance artists if Elon doesn't pull off that AI.

I've uninstalled my X app for 3 months though. The platform has been so toxic since the pandemic.

I love the way that he's so passionate about 'free speech' (..for people who agree with him) and yet actually wants to charge people to use his 'free speech' platform.

The date where he blasts off with loads of other self-obsessed billionaires to Mars *never to return* can't come soon enough.

Definitely noticed a lot of migration to Bluesky too - South East and East Asian artists (in particular) tend to drive a lot of traffic to Twitter from those countries as a way of self-promotion, it's not so embedded in the political norms of those countries and they have frankly better apps for non-international social media stuff; and because they are very privacy-inclined, not being able to block is likely a step too far. Probably a step too far for app stores worldwide one would hope.

Then there's the absolute interference and algorithm gaming for political matters that should really just be illegal worldwide. It was always these accusations against the previous Twitter leadership that they were supressing free speech... every accusation is a confession indeed.

I'm just amazed it took them that long.

I mean I get that many creators rely on it but I don't think it has been useful to them for a while.

giving Bluesky another shot but that also means i will try to force the algorithm to give me the right stuff :kink:

kinda feel this is appropriate for the musk thread because it sure as shit shouldn't be affecting real life politics

no news to anyone but Musk has gone fully off his rocker - inane spam posting about the UK's politics, calling for the King to intervene to make Starmer go, calling for Starmer to go in general on 'grooming gangs' which is fertile territory for the far-right to campaign on because it both makes them look righteous and is Islamophobic, and spreading conspiracy theories about what the Labour gov is responsible for. Oh and calling Tommy Robinson to be freed.

feels so f***ing insane that the richest man in the world is laser focusing on the UK government from atop his social media platform and doing his best to spread misinformation about them and bring them down.

I think the government need to stop using Twitter.
