Negative is more than fine and as fans we are not expected to like everything and equally i think we do talk about Kylie songs we dont like and that is all great as we all have different tastes and opinions which i think we mostly celebrate in this forum. There are posters that come here with an underlying tone of backhanded compliments, and the minute you see a post from them you just know there is going to be a negative tone in the post, i dont get why people bother as if you dont like Kylie why take the time to come and post and same if you dont like Dannii.

I listened to Tension on my walk this afternoon and I find myself singing along the whole album

Highlights this afternoon Green Light and One More Time

I guess some fans thought after Padam that we would go back to Kylie in the 1980s with chart runs for every single and album and everyone wants a copy. Its just not like that anymore.

I think we as fans got a little greedy (in a good way)

We want news everyday.

What i really want to see if some big A list celebs going to watch Kylie in Vegas and photos. I would love a photo of Adele for example having a bop to Kylie in Voltaire

Will be interesting to see how BMGs other big release performs in its 2nd week (Rick Astley) - his previous 3 albums have all performed well in terms of chart weeks - BMG dropped the price of the iTunes download back down to £4.99 this week so looks as those they are testing different approaches?

Expecting ‘Tension’ to be out of the charts this week but I’m not mad at it as I’m confident there will be plenty of opportunities for it to return and/or pick up some good sales.

Interestingly Kylie will work on new songs/album during residency. May as well if she is in LA where some producers are etc and videos can be made. BMG/Kylie have had plenty of time to look at Padam Padam success since its release

If nothing else, she can hopefully shoot videos for forthcoming singles, or any background stuff for Audience With. I recall during the X era when she shot videos for Wow and IMA at the same time in LA, and was talking about how much it's generally cheaper to shoot vids in LA than London.

Back to new music/songs, I really think she needs to do a Lana or Taylor and release as many as possible when she has the backing of a record label like bmg, and when the market is as it is now (if it this way for the next 5 yrs if not decade, I can easily see her getting a uk #1 album with every release unless it goes head to head with a major star. And she can win there also as evidenced by Disco)

And getting songs out there builds up those streaming numbers.

Listened to Tension on my commute today and still no skips. Love every track.

I know the discussion moved on, but I put some work into getting these stats together, so I may as well post them. :kink:

Here's a comparision of #1 albums from 2023, the first four weeks of their chart runs. The order of the albums is from the best 4th week position to worst.

I've also included:

- their current certification levels, if they are certified. Silver = 60,000+ / Gold = 100,000+

- their position in the "Year to Date" Top 100 album chart as of 13th October (i.e. the best selling albums of the year so far)

01-02-02-02 Olivia Rodrigo - GUTS ----- (GOLD) / YTD: 27th

01-01-02-04 Ed Sheeran - - ----- (GOLD) / YTD: 13th

01-02-05-04 P!nk - Trustfall ----- (GOLD) / YTD: 24th

01-03-04-04 Travis Scott - Utopia ----- (SILVER) / YTD: 47th

01-04-12-22 Burna Boy - I Told Them

01-05-14-24 Lana Del Rey - Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd ----- (GOLD) / YTD: 37th

01-04-17-27 J Hus - Beautiful and Brutal Yard

01-13-19-35 Sam Smith - Gloria

01-06-23-44 Metallica - 72 Seasons

01-32-48-56 boygenius - the record

01-10-35-59 Blur - The Ballad of Darren ----- (SILVER) / YTD: 92nd

01-11-28-62 Gorillaz - Cracker Island

01-23-35-64 Hozier - Unreal Unearth

01-08-36-83 Kylie Minogue - Tension ----- (SILVER) / YTD: 97th

01-23-52-99 Paramore - This Is Why

01-14-22-108 Busted - Greatest Hits 2.0

01-12-51-123 Shania Twain - Queen of Me

01-49-101-124 Nothing But Thieves - Dead Club City

01-65-200 The Lathums - From Nothing to a Little Bit More (3 weeks Top 200)

01-66-200 Liam Gallagher - Knebworth 22 (3 weeks Top 200)

01-66 The Reytons - What's Rock and Roll (2 weeks Top 200)

01-84 Ellie Goulding - Higher Than Heaven (2 weeks Top 200)

01-94 Royal Blood - Back to the Water Below (2 weeks Top 200)

01-126 Enter Shikari - A Kiss for the Whole World (2 weeks Top 200)

01 The Lottery Winners - Anxiety Replacement Therapy (1 week Top 200)

Not yet 4 weeks old:

01-08-41 Ed Sheeran - Autumn Variations

01-03 Drake - For All the Dogs

01 Ren - Sick Boi

So Kylie is one of just 11 #1 albums released in 2023 to certify, also one of 11 to be in the Top 100 albums of 2023 so far (a chart which is mostly full of Greatest Hits and old studio albums).

The artists who had better 4th week positions than Kylie, there's a lot to consider regarding why this is: do they have a stronger streaming presence than her? Do they have more of an international presence which helps them with playlisting, including album tracks? Did promotion occur beyond the first week? Did they have more hit singles to prop up the streaming sales? Does their genre of music lend itself more to streaming success? How old are they/how many albums have they released/how long has their career been going - are they still considered "current", more youth orientated artists?

Kylie at #83 was 1,872 sales (63,463 total sales was shared on SayHey, week 1/2/3 were 53,237 / 5,516 / 2,838 respectively, which leaves 1,872 for week 4). Not much separates the positions at the lower end of the chart. For instance this week's #62 (21 places higher) sold 2,319, which is only 447 sales more.

I won't claim that 1-8-36-83 is fantastic. However there's certainly been worse chart performances than Tension this year, and it has also outsold quite a few albums which had better chart runs. Taking one example - Sam Smith's fourth studio album was released in January yet it still isn't Silver after 10 months. It was released off the back of a gigantic international #1 single (Unholy).

The above data is obviously only regarding #1 albums. Look at this thread: http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=262641 to see every 2nd week position for Top 10 albums from 2023. It demonstrates just how frontloaded most new releases are nowadays, and clearly Kylie isn't immune to this.

Yes it would have been fabulous if Kylie's album had held up as well as P!nk's Trustfall (an album which has done very well in today's market). However P!nk has consistently been a much bigger album selling artist than Kylie over the years... so I would argue that it's to be expected that Trustfall would be less frontloaded than Tension.

Compare their most recent album sales totals:

2017: Beautiful Trauma (600,000+ August 2022) // 2018: Golden (168,000+ September 2023)

2019: Hurts 2B Human (228,000+ February 2023) // 2020: Disco (180,000+ September 2023)

2023: Trustfall (130,000+ October 2023) // 2023: Tension (63,463 October 2023)

And getting songs out there builds up those streaming numbers.

Speaking of streaming.... I downloaded Tension offline on my Spotify in case I need to listen to it when out jogging, hiking, etc. However, when I play it at home and am connected to the internet, I presume streaming still counts, correct?

Yes, it all counts - also I believe anything listened to offline gets added/accounted for when you are online again.

yay, that's great! Heaven knows I've been streaming the sh*t out of this album. Other than Love Train and surprisingly Padam, there isn't a single song I skip. I skip PP only because I played it to death in the summer and I can't wait to get to HOTN.

^^ I’m the same with PP, I don’t dislike it at all but I absolutely rinsed it for weeks and weeks so now I skip it as I overplayed it so much

Look at all those Taylor albums ahead

Troye 7 down to 42

Kylie did well to have 2 weeks top 10

Love the stats Jay….really demonstrates how the market has changed and expectations of chart runs can easily be unrealistic.
