Today marks 30 years since 'What Kind of Fool (Heard All That Before)' was released. Lead single from Kylie's first greatest hits album, the song was also the last original song released by Kylie under PWL and returns to the high-energy pop sound of her earlier hits. It reached #17 in Australia and #14 in the UK, extending her run of UK consecutive Top 20 hits to 18. Its music video sees Kylie recreate scenes of Brigitte Bardot in the 1956 film 'And God Created Woman'.

30 years on, what are your thoughts on 'What Kind of Fool'?

I like it a lot! It deserved more success at the time. Did it come across as dated at the time, or was it more a case of it not being supported/promoted enough to manage any better than Top 15?

Reviews at the time seemed to see it as a regression for Kylie and I think the public were just over SAW at this point. Kylie's on record as saying she didn't like the song, partly I think because it was a regression in sound when she was keen to move on.

I see where she's coming from but I like to see it as a celebration of her classic PWL sound, suitable for a greatest hits collection. I remember absolutely loving this years ago; I don't find it's held up quite as well now but I do still find it a bop. I love her look in the video too.

From the perspective of the single complimenting the predominant sound found on the Greatest Hits it was promoting, that did seem like a good idea! It seems a pity that it was criticised for regression when it could have more positively been thought of as being a celebration of her classic sound.

The fact that the Greatest Hits went to #1 in the UK maybe indicates that What Kind of Fool did its job in the sense of shifting albums, even if it didn't do amazingly well as a single!

I really like the single artwork. I think that quite a few of her artworks from the PWL period are very dated and a little garish with the various fonts and design choices, but this one holds up quite well I think. Last year I embarked on a mission to collect many of her 7" singles, and my copy of What Kind of Fool is in a really nice condition considering it's 30 years old! My only curiosity is that the front cover simply calls it 'What Kind of Fool' and leaves off '(Heard All That Before)' (but it does include the full title on the back cover's track list).

Yeah I like it too. Apparently it was photographed by a friend on holiday which explains why it looks more natural. There is a few PWL artwork I like, particularly Shocked and Word is Out. Devil and Finer Feelings are good too.

It was her 5th no.1 on dance chart in Poland (DJ tips).

Her previous no.1's were: ISBSL, GTBC, JNSPP, TOMP...

TOP 30 DANCE CHART: 18.10.1992

01 04 05 WHAT KIND OF FOOL – KYLIE MINOGUE

02 02 05 AVE MARIA (WALZ THAT NOYS MIX) – NOYS

03 09 03 IF YOU ASKED ME TO – CELINE DION

04 01 06 BAKER STREET – UNDERCOVER

05 03 04 BABY DON’T CRY – INXS

...

Kylie promoted the release (I’m sure she was happy at that point to be completing her PWL contract).

It’s 16-14-23-41-65 chart run showed that the general public and Kylie’s fanbase were moving away from the PWL pop sound - a few years earlier a track like this would have been a comfortable Top 5.

WKOF was a step back in sound for kylie at the time but maybe it was a nod to her early pop sound that was hugely successful for her and SAW.
Her performance on TOTP was awful and didn’t help the chart position but it’s one of her songs which I do like. Yes, it’s not as good as some of her other PWL stuff but it deserved to do better than it actually did.
Its not a song i would have though ta dj would pick for a remix from her catalogue, if it was was to happen i always felt breathe would be the ideal choice, i would like Kylie to give what kind of fool a full performance on a tour though.
Let's look at the chart week where 'What Kind of Fool (Heard All That Before)' reached it's chart peak.
