Biography

Sam Ryder’s soulful and spectacular voice blasts off like fireworks all throughout his pristine pop music. The Essex-based singer is a true 21st-century success story: after years of playing in rock and metal bands and trying to break into the songwriting game in Nashville, Ryder took to posting cover songs to the internet during the 2020 pandemic lockdowns, and quickly caught the attention of stars like Sia and Justin Bieber. In short order, he skyrocketed to social media stardom—and it’s not hard to hear why. Although 2019’s “Set You Free”, on which he showcased his impressive vocal acrobatics over soft guitar chimes, hinted at what was to come, his post-lockdown work is where he really shines. The soaring and impassioned “More” (2021) explores his metal influences, and The Sun’s Gonna Rise EP offers the best of his poignant originals thus far, such as the melancholy “Whirlwind” and the sun-blasted “July”. - Apple Music

Biography

Zedd

In 2012, when Zedd released his debut album, Clarity, he had a clarification of his own to make: “#CLARITY is all about the music,” he tweeted. “The ‘M’ in ‘EDM’.” It was a crucial distinction for an artist who had come up through rave’s ranks in record time. The Russian-German producer, born Anton Zaslavski in 1989, got his start in electronic music in 2010 by winning a pair of remix contests—prior to that, he’d played guitar in a post-hardcore band, Dioramic. He came flying off the blocks soon after with remixes of Skrillex’s “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” and Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” But while his early singles, like 2011’s “Shave It,” were booming, laser-strafed electro-house anthems in a jagged style that some fans dubbed “complextro,” it soon became clear that those buzzing, fizzing synths were secondary to his real interest: songwriting. His second album, 2015’s True Colors, traded festival fireworks for sleek choruses, clever chord changes, and featured guests like Logic, Troye Sivan, and Selena Gomez, and since then he has continued to prove his range. “Stay,” a 2017 track with Alessia Cara, flips trap drums and silky vocoders into a bewitchingly skeletal (and devastatingly wistful) form, while 2018’s “Happy Now” trickles acoustic guitars over a twinkling music-box beat and a plaintive chorus that captures his music’s deceptive emotional pull. And then there’s 2018’s “The Middle,” a song Zedd tried out with a number of heavy-hitting vocalists (Carly Rae Jepsen, Demi Lovato, Camila Cabello) before finally going with Maren Morris, a country singer little known in pop-EDM circles. Splitting the difference between Morris’ grit and his own silicon sheen, Zedd once again proved his versatility—as well as his star-making instincts. - Apple Music

Maren Morris

When Maren Morris’ first single, “My Church,” broke through in 2016, a few pious folks thought she was blaspheming by proclaiming she never felt more holy than when speeding with the radio turned up. The country star has been making unapologetically modern hits and driving into opposing lanes ever since. Morris was born in Arlington, Texas, in 1990, and played across the state for years before moving to Nashville to write songs for bigger names. But God or the gods of country radio were smiling down, and her 2016 debut, Hero, made Morris famous by showcasing a deep-bottomed voice that could swoop up to broken high notes, and songs that drew her as autonomous, cool, skeptical about commitment, and always barrelling forward. Then came something more startling than blasphemy: non-country success. The 2018 global hit “The Middle”—a collaboration with dance-pop giant Zedd and future-bass duo Grey—evoked big-tent EDM, ’90s pop comfort food, and, save the Texas twang in her vocal, not a whiff of western. It was a distinctive move, and controversial to some. But with 2019’s swaggering “GIRL” (“About being a woman in this very competitive industry,” she told Apple Music), and as a voice in left-leaning Americana supergroup The Highwomen, Morris has become a fake-fur-wearing agent for change. Count on outrage. - Apple Music

BEAUZ

American duo (pronounced bowz) composed of Bernie and Johan are versatile classy rockstars who decide their own destiny. Proving themselves to be virtuosos of music production, the duo quickly caught attention from top power players in the industry, landing them multiple official remixes. Most notably, their Happy Now remix has become a staple in Zedd's DJ sets. In 2019, BEAUZ released the genre-bending Count The Hours with Armada, which became viral on Douyin and kicked off the duo’s first international tour spanning across North America and Asia. BEAUZ then collaborated with Spinnin Records to release Feel The Light as the first record on the new imprint Spinnin’ Asia, positioning the duo as the godfathers of Psypop. In 2020, BEAUZ hosted the avant garde Blockeley festival featuring a star-studded lineup on Minecraft in collaboration with UC Berkeley and their management, KEYTEM. They released their first EP BEAUZWORLD Vol. 1, kicking off the BEAUZ IMPERIAL TOUR, stunting the world as the only international artists to deliver world class performances during the pandemic. Synonymous with a unique music brand and eluding an impeccable flair in everything they do, BEAUZ will not stop until they sit on the throne. - Spotify

Biography

Fred again..

Born in 1993, London-based songwriter/producer Fred John Philip Gibson treats his electro and rave-inspired songs as diary entries. But the artist, who performs under the name Fred Again.., doesn’t limit the subject matter to himself. On albums like 2021’s Actual Life (April 14 - December 17 2020) and its sequel, Actual Life 2 (February 2 - October 15 2021), Fred invited his friends into the studio to record their personal stories and then sprinkled them throughout the album. (The obvious exception was an epic Kodak Black sample on “Kahan (Last Year)”.) The songwriter has also worked with stars such as Eminem and Ed Sheeran, but Fred’s longest collaboration is with his brothers, whom he shares his tracks with before they’re released. “It’s such a blessing to work with both of my brothers,” Fred explained in an interview with Apple Music. “I’ll spend hours and hours working on a tune, and they’ll hear it how I will, but without all the baggage. They bring a fresh ear.” - Apple Music

Swedish House Mafia

No artists represent the exuberance of the 2010s’ EDM boom quite like Swedish House Mafia. Stockholm natives Steve Angello, Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso only played as a trio for a few years, but they burned brighter than virtually any of their main-stage peers, perfecting a winning fusion of radio-ready choruses and earthshaking drops—and then pulling the plug at their peak. In the circus-like atmosphere of the EDM scene, they were living proof of an adage often attributed to P.T. Barnum: “Always leave them wanting more.” All three DJs cut their teeth in the European progressive-house scene of the 2000s, and by 2007, they were informally calling themselves Swedish House Mafia. But not until 2010 did they release their first single under the name: “One”, an attention-grabbing epic whose Pharrell feature testified to the trio’s aim to conquer pop along with dance music. The next two years were a whirlwind of supersized hooks, armor-plated snares and cheekily grandiose anthems like “Save the World” a song that epitomised the heart-on-sleeve yearning of early-2010s EDM. Then, in 2012, they announced their farewell tour, which took them from autumn into the spring of 2013. They left behind the mix album Until One and the singles collection Until Now, the closest they came to releasing a proper full-length, along with two live albums and two documentary films. Five years later, the three reunited to headline Ultra Music Festival, teasing the possibility of future work together—and suggesting that as long as house music rules clubland, there’s a chance that Swedish House Mafia might return to reclaim their throne. - Apple Music

Biography

According to legend, Glass Animals chose their name by picking two words out of the dictionary at random—but you couldn’t come up with a better combination for a group that toes the line between the pristine and primal. On their 2014 debut, Zaba, the Oxford quartet aligned themselves with a storied lineage of abstract alt-rock—the moody atmospheres of Radiohead, the tropical textures of Animal Collective—but in Dave Bayley, Glass Animals possess an uncommonly smooth singer who could mould those left-field influences into sultry, R&B-flavoured pop songs. While the album made them indie darlings, it also earned the group admirers beyond the typical NME reader—the 2015 single “Lose Control” saw them team up with Brooklyn MC Joey Bada$$ for a trippy rap track. That sense of anything-goes openness fully flourished on 2016’s How to Be a Human Being, whose procession of freaky, funky anthems and synth-smeared slow jams earned Glass Animals their first Mercury Prize nomination. But after drummer Joe Seaward was nearly killed in a 2018 cycling accident, Glass Animals dialled down the eccentricity for 2020’s Dreamland, a more intimate record that further harmonized the art-rock/club-pop dialectic at the heart of their music. Speaking about the single “Your Love (Déjà Vu)” to Apple Music, Hayley said, “The idea was to take my favourite '90s producers like Timbaland and The Neptunes and the way they used samples, yet record a lot of those sounds in the way The Beatles or Beach Boys might’ve done it... and then taking Beatles and Beach Boys sounds and resampling them as [those producers] might’ve done.” That Dreamland cracked the Top 10 in both the UK and US is a testament to Glass Animals’ gift for melding different styles and eras into the sound of now. - Apple Music
