I'd love to see Mary On A Cross go top 20 soon, i've only just gotten into it but omg its such a brilliant song! Glad it's looking like it'll spice up the chart!

Fingers crossed for Eliza Rose at #1, Elton/Britney keeping their #3 placing and Big City Life making the top 10.

 

Would be nice if Arctic Monkeys have done enough over the past few days streams to scrape top 40 as well. It would be a shame if it held the #1 spot on Spotify (if only for a day) and didn't even get that far.

Bugzy Malone

Liberating grime from its London domicile in the mid-2010s, Bugzy Malone firmly implanted Manchester on the UK rap map with confessional storytelling in an unmistakable Mancunian gruff. Born Aaron Davis in Greater Manchester in 1990 to a single-parent mother, a young Bugzy Malone followed in his uncle’s criminal footsteps. After being expelled from school and enduring homelessess as a teen, Malone finally escaped Manchester street life after a prison sentence at the age of 16 served as a catalyst. Turning his life around as an amateur boxer before deciding upon a full-time career in rap, Malone released his introspective debut EP, Walk With Me, in 2015, a territorial reworking of grime whose title track installed his area’s calling code (0161) as a regional rap mantra. Its follow-up, 2016’s Facing Time, found Malone wrestling with the rigors of fame and unbosoming himself of traumatic stress, themes he would expand upon in 2017’s resolute declaration of provincial sovereignty, King of the North. Malone’s independent success was ratified in 2018 with his first full-length album, B. Inspired, a proper fusion of grime, Afro-swing, speed garage, and hip-hop, typified by “Die By the Gun,” a reflective third-person tale of the turbulent Manchester street life he fortuitously left behind to become a trailblazer for Northern hip-hop. - Apple Music

 

MIST

Birmingham-based grime MC Mist rose out of the mid-2010s grime resurgence, proving that you don't have to be from London to be taken seriously in U.K. rap circles. Mist, like most grime artists, started out by dropping numerous mixtapes and freestyles, which very quickly started racking up millions of views online. Although Mist's lyrics contained well-worn tropes concerning making money and life on the streets, he also delivered very honest bars about the loss of his parents and how his life changed as a result. During his early career, Mist collaborated with fellow Birmingham resident and producer Shadow, who would create languid yet melodic beats for Mist to navigate. In 2016, Mist really began to break through; early in the year he stepped up to Fire in the Booth, a renowned feature on Charlie Sloth's BBC Radio 1Xtra show. The end of the year saw the release of the M I S to the T EP, which featured two standout singles "Karlas Back" and "Ain't the Same." 2017 found Mist embarking on a U.K.-wide tour, including stops at Koko, London, and Manchester O2 Ritz. - Spotify

Biography

 

Lil Tjay is stuck between two worlds. He grew up in the South Bronx, where the tradition of hustlers-turned-rappers is less a myth than an everyday reality. Born in 2001, though, Tjay was also deeply obsessed with the culture of the internet; his two favourite artists are Justin Bieber and Lil Wayne. This duality is his greatest strength. The MC, born Tione Jayden Merritt, isn’t afraid to rap about both sides of his childhood. “I was just an innocent kid, but I still had that street view,” he explained to Apple Music. “I had that balance. I just rap about things that I’ve been through.” His first hit, 2018’s “Resume,” was a SoundCloud sensation, released when Tjay was just a teen. He credits his sharpened pen to his stint in prison on robbery charges a year earlier. On the track, he touches on the fragility of his success when he raps, “I bug out on all instrumentals/It might be my time, but I can't go.” As his career progressed, though, he became more comfortable with his fame and supplemented his melodic flow and infectious, unforgettable bars with talk of designer clothes and foreign cars. His biggest hits, like “F.N” from 2019’s True 2 Myself, move from lamenting his past to celebrating the present. “Cartier glasses, 20/20, got a clear view/You a man, I don't fear you/Act up, we gon' mask up, boy, I dare you,” he raps. “We’re the ones that are pushing this boundary,” D-Block Europe’s Young Adz told Apple Music. “People who are signing urban music over here—they call it urban, we call it pop in the streets—that ain’t street music. We’re doing street, UK, wavy music, front-lining it.” They might not consider themselves pop, but by the most literal definition, DBE are just that. Chart positions, sold-out arenas and a nomination for the 2020 BRIT Award for British Group (before they’d even released a debut album) all make them one of UK rap’s most popular acts. D-Block Europe was originally a collective that called upon various London MCs, but Adz and childhood friend Dirtbike LB have emerged as both the engine room and executive board of the operation. They met at Sedgehill School in South London, where Adz was dropping mixtapes from the age of 13. He signed an ultimately fruitless major-label deal at 15 before coming under the patronage of NY rap heavyweight Jadakiss, who offered features, support slots and license to use The LOX’s D-Block Records name. With a series of self-released singles and mixtapes, Young Adz and Dirtbike LB took their place at UK rap’s top table during the late 2010s. Leavening trap’s chilly textures and portraits of road life with sticky Auto-Tuned hooks, their music is notable for its nimble wordplay and candour. While D-Block quickly gathered notoriety for their unfiltered bedroom braggadocio (“Kitchen Kings”), their willingness to open up about mental health and therapy (“Prescription Drugs”) has made them a standout presence in UK rap. It’s all been done independently by the industrious duo (63 new tracks released across three mixtapes during 2019 alone). They’ve continuously waved away offers from labels, confident that no one can guide their career as well as they can.
