Good. It was a total disgrace to try and pass off a tax cut for millionaires that would have to be paid for by a cut in public services

Excellent! It should never have happened and they should be ashamed that they ever even tried to do something like that in the first place. Hopefully the public don’t fall for the inevitable oh we’ve listened and made changes narrative they will try

Great. Now u-turn on the bankers bonus and corporate tax cut too. It's not enough.

pour one out for all the rags that loudly trumpeted her reheating Thatcher's catchphrases and her 'I'm not afraid to be unpopular' spiel that has gone up in flames as soon as she saw what true unpopularity looked like. I don't think it'll easily return either.

That's great news - considerably weakens the Truss premiership and the ultra right wing lot will be royally pissed off. Of course, we still have a horrific right wing government (who are just planning austerity on steroids) and UK companies have had billions wiped off their books.

He's a complete toerag but as an example of how the dangerous far right in society think, Dan Wooton has said that "The Establishment and the Mainstream media" are responsible for this U turn. But that is dangerous falsehood, the main reasons are 1) Financial markets thought policy wa unsustainable 2) Tory MPs themselves thinking they would get unelected because the 3) Public thought it was a terrible policy.

The media (especially print) is hugely swung to the side of the right wing and they have been pro this policy. But this new feature of attaching "Mainstream Medai" is very dangerous Trumplike, conspiracy theory crap and should be called out.

I’d ignore people like Dan Wooton- does anyone take him seriously? The policy failed as nobody wanted it. It wasn’t on Truss’ ticket and it widely condemned by loads of people, mainly because I suspect they’d heard the backlash. Honestly, some people. I wouldn’t mind if this was on the Tory manifesto and people voted for it, but it was a complete smash and grab which seems utterly bonkers.

The contempt that some people have for the intelligence of people is crazy- the policy failed because it was a terrible idea. I don’t think we need the BBC to tell us it’s a bad idea, everyone can see it’s a terrible idea in the wrong time that would be paid for with a slash to essential services.

The UK is still reeling from the impact of Osbournes austerity (and will be until we rejoin the EU as Brexit was the culmination of the Osbourne economic era), there’s no way the UK could handle another round. Public services are already in dire shape as it is. This will just straight up shut services and destroy the NHS

Exactly, it can all be traced back to 2010-2015. The time for borrowing to invest instead of cutting public services was during the early 2010s to spur on growth and keep the economy from petering out. But instead we had a constant media barrage telling us that the public finances were like a households credit card and completely ignoring the fact that the bond markets (at the time) were more than happy to allow governments to borrow at near 0% rates if used wisely. I'm sure that there is definitely a case for restraining public spending and cutting out unnecessary waste but some of the cuts to vital services were so unfairly targeted and deeply damaging as to be counterproductive.. with any savings made more than wiped out by the future costs required to rectify the situation.

Anyway, I'm so used to U-turns now that this is hardly even that noteworthy, yes it's good news obviously, but it's also great because it'll upset the gammons at the IEA who think as a society we need to prioritise those earning over £150K who apparently need an extra £5K to £50K+ every year.

It's also good because it has immediately burnt some of Liz Truss' vital political capital, and trust on economics is almost impossible to win back.

Also, Dan Wooton is about as relevant or serious as Mr Blobby. Given the Daily Mail (last I checked they were the 'media establishment') trumpeted 'Finally A Real Tory Budget' I think we can just about dismiss this as deluded nonsense (as with everything he says). Yes, it should be called out - but personally I wouldn't even bother paying attention to it, other than to tell him to fuck off back to New Zealand.

Yes after reflection, agree with the above 2 posts, this was the undiluted full fat ultra libertarian/right wing Premiership that the likes of the IEA/Daily Telegraph/Daily Mail and the Nationalist right had been dreaming for years. Truss did everything to the letter. And it's died on its arse already - destroyed by the realities of the market and the fact that the people saw through this shit especially as they can't afford to live.

There's been a lot of nonsense spouted today at this conference - from the likes of Rees Mogg saying that fracking would be popular with constituents, Andrea Jenkyns going on a rant about fictional 'Harry Potter' degrees and stuff about removing all regulations from companies under 500 employees (which was shut down). Gove and Dorries going rogue. More huge poll leads for Labour. For this cult, although still in power and still dangerous their dream is over. People have awoken and will question and hold everything they do to account now.

This is not a happy Tory Party - you have a Cabinet and strategy team who totally misunderstand the idea why people voted Conservative and they are too braindead to see it. The media has turned against them, even people who should be impartial, you can clearly see have an agenda. The stuff Rees-Mogg is peddling aout is just pure delusion, again - I can only assume some wealthy donors are lobbying for less worker rights and lack of regulation failing. The Truss premiership is done before it's even got off of the ground - people don't want this stuff. This whole economy forecasting, has now magically appeared, although a couple of days were were told it was so rigorous it wouldn't come until November. The word of mouth from the Conference must be terrible.

They seem intent of pissing everyone off across all angles, I think the "One Nation Tories" sense blood. Similar to how the ERG have made moves in the past, wouldn't surprise me if they are plotting in the wings either.

I know the phrase "Let's have a General Election now" is overused and sometimes you just have to let people govern but Nadine Dorries is completely right on this one (even if she then destroys her own point by erroneously claiming there is a mandate for privatising Channel 4) - since Truss is going on a wildly different direction with policy compared with Johnson on the economy then it is A DISGRACE there is no mandate! Some people raise feeble objections saying Johnson's government had huge policy changes and laws resulting from Covid but that was due to necessity not ideaology.

God it sounds like I'm praising Johnson's government - no it was awful too (esp Brexit) but compared to the terrors we have in power now.....

^I think what we might quickly see if the polls don't increase, is the "One Nation Torys" will make it incredibly difficult. I mean, they already are. I can't rememebr this much discontent this early in to job. I guess some of them will have their own eyes on the leadership in the future. I think if certain policies and pledges are not met, then the likes of Gove will make things very difficult. Definitely makes me feel like an election could get pushed.
:puke2: Ella Henderson sang at the Tory conference. She's like the UKs Three Doors Down!
Not going to watch her awful speech but heard Truss lies about being the first PM from a comprehensive - actually she's the 3rd after Brown or May. I just find it incredible they have the gall to come out with facts to big them up and not check.
It was an utter train wreck, even by Tory standards. Utter waffle, lies and not a single actual idea. She’s like an AI model who has been fed a stack of Tory speeches and amalgamated them into something that is somehow even worse than the sum of its parts.

May's school went comprehensive while she was there. I think Brown's went comprehensive after he had left. Very few PMs could possibly have gone to a comprehensive school as they have only existed since the late 1960s which makes her claim fairly meaningless.

Can't make out the general feeling from the conference - seems like all the Tories loved it but everyone else thought it was flat. I did find it mad she said the "anti-coalition" against growth, which is pretty much half of their middle-class voters who are against any housing development on green belt land. This whole "tough woman of steel" act just seems crazy - I think if she tanks the pound again she will get battered. Her and her whole team just seem compltely absorbed from real life. Strip workers of all their rights, expect everyone to work harder for less and still expect their vote? The Cabinet and strategists are honestly bonkers.

Generally think we are a few weeks away from the backbenchers making their move against her. At this point I'm inclined to think there will be a GE next year, don't think the tactic of "blame Russia" will work much unless they backtrack and tax energy companies (which Truss obvs won't as it's against "growth").
