“You can’t stop YouTubing me, on repeat, running this beat”

The debut single from from Malvern-born X Factor graduate Lloyd, the Jagger in the title refers not to Mick, but to a “swaggerjacker”, somebody who plagiarises song lyrics from another. Ironically for Cher, the term itself was first popularised in song by Cam’ron back in 2006 with his Jay-Z ‘diss track’ “Swagger Jacker (Biter Not a Writer)”. The lack of originality in the record does not end there as the tune is largely composed along the lines of “Oh My Darling, Clementine” - given this western folk ballad long fell out of copyright however, Syco had no issues with pesky royalites.

Despite hitting #12 in the US with Want U Back, only one more top 20 hit was to follow for Lloyd (a collaboration with Mike Posner).

'The Time (Dirty Bit)' stopping chart history with Willow Smith, I much preferred 'Just Can't Get Enough' from Black Eyed Peas.

Agreed, much superior to this one.

Not a fan of 'Swagger Jagger' but then I'm not really a Cher Lloyd fan in general (Sirens was a good song by her though).

HOW is the abysmal Marvin Gaye not in the top 10. Completely intolerable.

"You can't stop youtubing me" god this round is full of non stop shit isn't it?

15th - It’s My Birthday - Will I Am / Cody Wise

Average Score - 11.87

Highest Score - 24 (rio309)

Lowest Score - 1 (Bre)

#1 for 1 week from 19/07/14

“I can speak in Japanese - kawari, kawari, kawari”

The tenth and final #1 in total for William James Adams Jr. (including his work with The Black Eyed Peas) and the only chart entry for Philadelphian Wise, neither artist (15th March and 29th December) can even come close to claiming their birthdays when this reached the top in July 2014. As with pretty much every record in this heat, samples were used, in the case “Urvasi Urvasi” by A R Rahman who has reached the top 3 with “Jai Ho” in 2008 and “Fi Di Jockey” by Aidonia and Bounty Killer (the latter scraping the charts with It’s a Party getting to #65 in 1999).

Despite the inevitable critical panning, and the fairly high position on this rate, the record eventually went platinum in the UK, selling over 600,00 copies. Will I Am’s only chart action since has been a duet with The Voice’s winner Leah McFall that reached #56 and a collaboration with Guyanese singer Pia Mia that stalled at #21, so I guess musical karma’s been served.

Ok 'It's My Birthday' surviving somewhat makes up for the otherwise not very good results so far. Dumb as hell but basically every lyric is kind of iconic. x

14th - Dirtee Disco - Dizzee Rascal

Highest Score - 24 (DJ Cheeky Magpie)

“You wanna drink? It’s on me! Coca-Cola, JD”

Ah back in 2008-2010, when Dizzee was basically the Westlife of the charts. Almost everything he released got to to #1, including this first cut from the deluxe version of his Mercury nominated album “Tongue N Cheek”. It features background vocals from former One True Voice member Daniel Pearce who (despite not being credited) would later provide vocals on #1 hits “Nobody to Love” by Sigma and “I Got U” by Duke Dumont. The inevitable sample this time comes from the classic “I’ll Take You There” by The Staple Singers, which only made #30 upon release in the UK 1972 (albeit topping the American charts). Unsurprisingly the lowest selling #1 of 2010, the record also managed a paltry 5 weeks in the Top 40.

So tomorrow the Grand Final of the Worst Ever Number One Kicks Off!

But just before then, we need to know which ten songs will join the existing thirty #1s to complete the Ultimate Bottom 40!

It’s going to be ten from these 13…

Walk This Way - Girls Aloud / Sugababes

(I’m Gonna Be) 500 Miles - The Proclaimers / Brian Potter & Andy Pipkin

When You Believe - Leon Jackson

Shout - Shout for England / Dizzee Rascal / James Corden

The Club Is Alive - JLS

Wishing On a Star - X Factor Finalists 2011

Turn Up the Music - Chris Brown

Wake Me Up - Gareth Malone’s All Star Choir

A Bridge Over You - Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir

Freaky Friday - Lil Dicky / Chris Brown

You’ll Never Walk Alone - Michael Ball / Tom Moore / NHS Voices of Care Choir

Toosie Slide - Drake

Sausage Rolls for Everyone - LadBaby / Ed Sheeran / Elton John

Tomorrow morning I’ll reveal #13-#11 in this heat, and then tomorrow evening we’ll start the Grand Final!

Pleased Dirtee Disco and It’s My Birthday were spared - I know the former was a giant step down from Bonkers and Holiday but for me it’s OK, and the latter is objectively garbage but a guilty pleasure bop.

2 of my worst 5 have also gone though - Marvin Gaye and Swagger Jagger. :arrr:

Edited by Ghoul Jules

'Dirtee Disco' definitely shouldn't have been a #1 but honestly I still think it's pretty fun, it's held up a lot better than I expected it to having heard it again recently at the #1 listenthroughs.

'Toosie Slide' deserves to be spared from the top 10 too but I know it won't be. I guess I'm not going to complain too much at any of the other remaining songs progressing, even though I think that 18-24 section was on average a lot worse. I am quite shocked that Girls Aloud/Sugababes are so high though - in what universe is that really this much worse than 'One Way Or Another (Teenage Kicks)'?

Yes I don't think Toosie Slide is as bad as some of what's just been eliminated, I hope that and the Comic Relief songs are spared.

13th - Toosie Slide - Drake

Average Score - 12.29

Highest Score - 25 (Popchartfreak, King Rollo, Bjork)

Lowest Score - 3 (Daan, Bre)

1 week at #1 from 14/05/20

Kept off #1 - Say So (Doja Cat)

“Left foot up, right foot slide, basically I’m saying either way we ‘bout to slide”

This sixth chart-topper pulled Drake to within one of Justin Bieber as the Canadian with the most UK #1s. The single was self-penned by Drake and Ozan Yildirim (who had previously worked with Travis Scott on “Sicko Mode” and “Highest in the Room”). Almost unbelievably Aubrey Graham’s 96th chart hit and taken from his commercial mixtape “Dark Lane Demo Tapes” this did not generate the popular or critical appeal of previous records, with his threadbare production now starting to grate with many. It did however reach #1 in the US and spawned a TikTok challenge during Lockdown 1.0. Drake’s follow-up “Chicago Freestyle” would make the Top 10 and he would celebrate his 100th hit later in 2020, featuring on DJ Khaled’s “Greece”.

12th - I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) - The Proclaimers / Brian Potter & Andy Pipkin

Average Score - 12.39

Highest Score - 23 (gooddelta, dandy*)

Lowest Score - 1 (Chez Wombat)

#1 for 3 weeks from 31/03/07

Kept off #1 - Girlfriend (Avril Lavigne)

“Bobby Davro! Bobby Davro!”

Brian Potter and Andy Pipkin are of course the aliases of Peter Kay and Matt Lucas. Kay had tasted enormous Comic Relief chart success before in 2005 when (Is This the Way) to Amarillo became the longest running #1 for 7 years, not a bad feat given he didn’t appear on the record! Lucas had yet to enjoy any chart success but did appear in a number of music videos, including Blur’s Country House and Pet Shop Boy’s I’m with Stupid.

The original Proclaimers hit failed to make the top 10 upon release in 1988, but charted at the same time as this “re-imagining”, reaching #26. The Edinburgh duo had previously had scored 9 chart hits but had never reached the top.

Kay would claim another #1 in November 2009 through his Children in Need Medley, whereas Lucas would reach #34 in 2020 with “Thank You Baked Potato”, with all proceeds going to the Feed NHS Campaign. Two more chart hits would follow for the Reid twins, but this is their last entry in the Top 40.

11th - When You Believe - Leon Jackson

Average Score - 12.52

Highest Score - 24 (Mack)

Lowest Score - 1 (rio309)

3 weeks at #1 from 29/12/07

Kept off #1 - Crank That (Soulja Boy Tell’em)

“Easy just to run and hide, too frightened to begin”

It was incredibly close, but Leon isn’t going through to judges’ houses. The fourth X Factor winner beat off competition from Eva Cassidy & Katie Melua to secure the 2007 Christmas #1 with a slight lyrical reworking of the Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston duet from “The Prince of Egypt” soundtrack that reached #4 in December 1998. The writing was perhaps on the wall for Jackson however as it “only” sold 291,000 copies in its first week of sale, compared to Shayne Ward (742,000) and Leona Lewis (571,000) the previous two two years.

The West Lothian native’s follow up (and only other hit) “Don’t Call This Love” charted at #3 behind not only Pink’s So What but Peter Kay’s alter ego Geraldine McQueen with “The Winner’s Song” an X Factor parody, co-written by future judge Gary Barlow. That’s show business.

You know it’s a good bar list when Leon Jackson doesn’t make the cut.

Amazed but pleased that Walk This Way is through. Don’t even care for the original but at least out works as a rock song - as a pop song it’s a shouty mess.

I'm glad there's some awful 'normal' songs (The Club is Alive and Freaky Friday) up with all the charity ones as well, personally I think those are much more reprehensible as they don't have an excuse to be as bad as they are x

Who'd have thought Girls Aloud and Sugababes would be more hated than One Direction on a Buzzjack poll? *__

Toosie Slide was a painfully boring and transparent attempt to try and appeal to Tik Tok and was where he started to go downhill, but probably not quite worthy of up with the worst.
