Right I've sorted the playlist for this week (a bit more prepared this time!) - after last week's covered over 10 years, turnover already starts to increase a lot heading into the 70s and we're only covering just over 3 years this time, taking us up to March 1972. That means it'll be another week until we get to 'The Dark Side Of The Moon'.

So these are the relevant #2 albums for potential bonus tracks for this session:

1969

Songs from a Room - Leonard Cohen

Elvis (NBC TV Special) - Elvis Presley

Tommy - The Who

My Way - Frank Sinatra

The World of Val Doonican - Val Doonican

This Is Tom Jones - Tom Jones

Elvis Sings Flaming Star - Elvis Presley

At San Quentin - Johnny Cash

Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vols 2) - The Rolling Stones

To Our Children’s Children’s Children - Yhe Moody Blues

1970

Tom Jones Live in Las Vegas - Tom Jones

Easy Rider - OST

Paint Your Wagon - OST

McCartney - Paul McCartney

Five Bridges - The Nice

Fire and Wafer - Free

On Stage, February 1970 - Elvis Presley

1971

Tumbleweed Connection - Elton John

Cry of Love - Jimi Hendrix

Motown Chartbusters Volume 6 - Various Artists

Hot Hits 8 - Various Artists

1972

Teaser and the Firecat - Cat Stevens

A Nod Is As Good as a Wink to a Blind Horse - Faces

I had planned to start this week's session with 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' but I'm actually not going to do that now for reasons that will become clear - I'll swap it out for the next most popular White Album song.

There is a trio of interesting oddities among the #1 albums of 1971! And we'll be covering a mere 44 albums compared to 61 last week, thanks to a couple of songs that are a lot longer than many of the songs played last week. One in particular is... a lot longer (think of it as this session's equivalent of us listening to that entire Demis Roussos EP) Though I think there will be at least a couple of people who will be rather happier to hear this one than Demis Roussos.

Plenty more classic songs lined up this week anyway, looking forward to it once again ^_^

So I see we've had requests for these as bonus tracks:

Paul McCartney - Maybe I'm Amazed

Frank Sinatra - My Way

The Who - Pinball Wizard

something from Leonard Cohen ('The Partisan'?)

something from Jimi Hendrix ('Angel'?)

I don't think there's anything else jumping out at me to suggest above any of those (checked the Elton album and it doesn't contain any songs I know particularly well) so I think we covered this week pretty well already. Cohen seems like a good shout considering he had 2 #2 albums (the second being a lot later) but never got to #1.

The only other suggestion I’d make is something from Johnny Cash’s live album, as he won’t come up again - Folsom Prison Blues is only 1:29 and is a bit of a classic :)

I wouldn't be so sure that we won't be hearing from Johnny Cash anyway #spoilers
another vote for The Partisan if possible

Although the version of Folsom Prison Blues that is actually a classic is from the At Folsom Prison album (and a bit longer than 1:29)

The most streamed track, by considerable distance, from At San Quentin is A Boy Named Sue

There is a certain 1972 album that just came to mind for me that only got to #5... though it was after March (and actually didn't peak until 1973), so I'll keep it in mind for next week if we don't have enough good options from the next batch of #2s.

A Boy Named Sue is well worth a play

I know what you’re referring to and I highly endorse it *.*

Great effort Brë to capture all this, and Ed for the complete list of #2 albums!

Intrigued about the trio of interesting oddities among the #1 albums of 1971  also

I have an idea of what this album will be (originally I was thinking of another #1 album, but that was from 1973...)

Of the #2 album tracks for this session, my first choice would be the Leonard Cohen one (which I don't know), but I'm happy with all the others mentioned too.

I also highly endorse this. In fact, said artist had a 1971 album which didn't chart until after this one, and peaked at #3, as did (surely) it's most streamed track - so there's that too! (Although said artist's 'best of' albums may mean that song will come up eventually anyway.)
Oh after a little peek I think i've worked at the #5 album riddle, from a truly great artist. I also endorse a play from both that and the #3 album Jim mentions.
Btw I’m volunteering again this Sunday so won’t be able to make this session - really sorry guys. Maybe the week after…

Here comes the sun do-do-do-do...

I'll join at 4 to listen along, but will then be driving until about 4.45 so will join the chat then.

Also looking forward to possibly hearing

Gimme The Long And Winding Stairway To A Whole Lotta Wild Horses

Another great session!

In the interests of making my 4,000th post a meaningful one, Jim, Wardy and I are having a Zoom chat on Wednesday at 8:30pm. This actually came about from a comment I made in the Tombo thread in The Lounge, but if any of you would like to join us you’d be more than welcome. Just let me know and PM me your email address. Would love to speak to more of you in person after spending so much time with you doing this every week!

No pressure of course, and I totally get that many of us have anxiety about this sort of thing to a greater or lesser extent. Thinking to make it a semi regular thing if there’s interest, maybe once a month or so, so there should be more opportunities to join in the future if you can’t make it this time or need more time to gear up to the idea!

Tracklist from week 2 - note that I messed up and initially somehow overlooked Led Zeppelin IV so I ended up cutting off the last 2 albums which will appear at the start of next week instead, so we actually only got up to February 1972 (and did 43 albums instead of 44). Caught the error before we actually got to it thankfully but must take more care in the future oops!
