Out Of The Woods and Shum are both songs I'd never listened to until this year's rate... I ended up giving both solid points. Discovering new songs is one of the reasons this is always such a good thread!

I had definitely remembered Shum as coming 2nd at Eurovision!

It came 2nd in the televoting at least! Love how it's done so well here on ROTD, I'm really surprised it finished that high but we love to see it.

 60 34 269 P!nk - Try

266-219-335-473-159-164-167-50-34-60-xx

14th, 2012 | 4th, SF1

For P!nk’s last try at this contest, she slips down to #60 this year. Having recently had a re-appreciation on the forum however it still ends up the third-highest position it attained. The song was a cover of an obscure 2010 song from GoNorthToGoSouth, who pitched the song to her to popularise. It went on to become one of her biggest hits of the 2010s and is her best-regarded on Buzzjack, even out-doing ‘Just Give Me A Reason’ which became her best-selling hit but couldn’t make it out of the semi-finals.

 59 169 270 Ella Henderson - Ghost

56-81-70-69-180-82-169-59-

5th, 2014

Ella Henderson almost matches her final peak with ‘Ghost’, leaping 110 places this year to spend its 6th year in the final. Following her exit from X Factor she was given a deal with Syco who got Ryan Tedder on board to co-write and produce her debut single which would prove to be her biggest hit. She recently was recorded singing it at the Conservative Party Conference which she got criticised for, however this appears to have not affected the song’s popularity which remains a great pop song.

 58 46 270 Years & Years - King

6th, 2015 | 14th, SF2

Years & Years fall to their lowest position yet with ‘King’, fairly impressively it has yet to fall below 60th in its 7 year run. Back when they were still a group the track was their third chart hit and their biggest. Inspired by 80s synthpop and house music it was their major breakthrough release and still remains their best song.

 57 40 271 Azealia Banks (feat. Lazy Jay) - 212

Making her final appearance we have Azealia Banks who finishes on a below-average position. ‘212’ was one of the few hip-house tracks we had get big around the time and very much stood out for her attitude over the hard electro house beat. Meanwhile she’d never have another hit and would be involved in a few controversies over the next decade, however this still remains well regarded and for good reason.

 56 339 274 Tom Odell - Another Love

xx-xx-225-536-355-245-680-339-56-

Well I suppose Tom Odell was due a big rise this year with ‘Another Love’ given its big chart resurgence. It is indeed the first time it has got to the final, or even the semis. The song became his breakthrough hit after he was tipped by critics to be the next big singer-songwriter in 2013, then had various chart returns this decade from TikTok exposure. It certainly makes for an odd looking chart run and makes you wonder why Buzzjack didn't appreciate it that much at the time however the voting base of this here contest has certainly changed a lot in the last decade.

:right: 55 55 274 Weeknd (feat. Daft Punk) - Starboy

86-62-74-81-55-55-

2nd, 2016

The Weeknd still has two appearances in the top 50 but for now ‘Starboy’ has to stall at #55, having reached its peak last year. ‘Starboy’ was the first of two collabs with Daft Punk (the second of which is at #89 this year), proving them to a great fit for each other. It was the first release following his big rise to major success with the ‘Beauty Behind the Madness’ era and really cemented himself as a… starboy. It was - for a time - his biggest hit.

 54 109 280 Porter Robinson - Language

xx-xx-xx-xx-276-105-66-212-109-54-xx

20th, 2012 | 9th, SF1

Well we couldn’t really have asked for a better send off for Porter Robinson here as in its final year ‘Language’ returns to the top 100 for its 2nd year and also reaches a new peak. The song was the breakthrough hit for Porter becoming one of the defining anthems of the peak festival house era. The song went on to peak at #9 in the UK becoming his biggest of two hits. He would soon move away from this type of EDM but still remains very respected for his electronica-pop. The song was incredibly lucky to qualify in the round of 2012 however its small dedicated fanbase saw it make the final - indeed over half of its points total came from just 4 voters giving it a top-five rank.

 53 142 291 Ava Max - Sweet But Psycho

90-142-53-

4th, 2019

Having taken a fall last year Ava Max is back in the final at a new peak with ‘Sweet But Psycho’. The song became her breakthrough hit which still remains her biggest having been a multi-week #1 smash. Fans of carefree pure pop were all over this at the time making its #90 debut the following year seem rather lowly. However it seems this year it gets a position that would seem more expected.

 52 96 292 Loreen - Euphoria

04-06-03-04-10-09-11-22-96-52-xx

5th, 2015

Having taken a gigantic fall last year, you could have been thinking it was all over for Loreen in the contest. However it seems some of her fans have came back this year to at least end her run with a big climb, even if ‘Euphoria’ is still far from the heights it consistently made for the first half of its decade. The song having garnered a lot of hype even before Eurovision, eventually managed to win and become a fairly big UK hit. Whilst it sounds very much like a pop song of its time it still sounds great on occasion and it deserves its legacy of a complete decade run in the contest final.

 51 93 295 Major Lazer (feat. DJ Snake & MØ) - Lean On

32-83-92-98-95-93-51-

5th, 2015

Also gaining a resurgence this year we have Major Lazer. Having never left the final but always at a rather low position after its first year, it appears the time is now right for us to be a little more nostalgic about this era of dance and with one of its best songs to rise with it. ‘Lean On’ was a huge hit which brought Major Lazer to the forefront of the mainstream. They’d continue to rack up hits for a couple of years but none as special as this.

GWON PORTER  I remember liking Language a lot when it first came out, but really started to appreciate it more after becoming a full-on stan around the start of the Nurture era

Shum defying the odds here much like it did in Eurovision *.* definitely a modern classic for the contest

This year is going well for the Weeknd!!! We love to see it. Can't see him holding no. 1 though but i'm hoping so. Thinking Alan Walker for no. 1

Edited by Y'all Starlight

Some gooduns out in that 60-56 stretch, particularly Try. I'm one of those people (seemingly not alone) who really rates 212 despite not generally being a fan of the genre(s) it comes from. Another Love certainly deserves to be in the Top 100.
Nice to see Language finish on a high, also a new peak for Sweet But Psycho which is still a glorious pop song, and Lean On going back up after 4 years in the bottom 10 of the final.

'Involved in a few controversies' is putting it a little lightly re: Azealia Banks  She's not a pleasant person and I don't really love much of her other music but '212' is and always will be a timeless banger, had a good run.

I have always liked 'Another Love' but its recent revival has definitely seen its stock grow in my affections, excellent to see that getting such a big new peak <3

Of course the most important new peak here though is 'Language', absolutely love to see that bowing out of the competition on a high  right up there with my favourite songs of all time, I can't really explain why as it's not super unique or anything (and frankly a lot of other songs in a similar style have aged poorly and/or I never liked them) but it really just hits a sweet spot absolutely perfectly, and I've never even slightly tired of it, hearing it again as a bonus track at the #1 sessions recently almost still felt like hearing it for the first time and made me feel a little emotional lmao. I'm kind of glad he's moved onto a totally different musical style since then so his stuff since, while not connecting with me nearly as much (though still enjoyed a few tracks here and there), at least doesn't just feel like endless attempts to recreate 'Language' and falling miserably short.

Cool for 'Euphoria' to be going out on a big climb too even if it really ran out of its full voting power a few years ago for whatever reason. And yay for 'Starboy' being stable I guess although top 50 next year please! Also surprising 'Sweet But Psycho' has yet to make the top 50 but glad to see a new peak for that too.

yes for Another Love <3 actually deserved top 50

been a big fan of Tom Odell since day 1, one of my fav songs to sings and play on piano and also guitar, highly recommended song for any musicians out there

 50 54 296 Christine And The Queens – Tilted / Christine

38-30-36-42-54-50-

3rd, 2016

Kicking off the top 50 ‘Tilted/ Christine’ which climbs 4 places this year to recover slightly after dropping to its lowest ranking to date last year. The song has always managed to make it through to the final round and this year finished in 3rd place in the 2016 heat, in the final it replicates that and finishes in 3rd place for that year as well. I have to say I’m not a huge fan of the song but good to see something different reach the final rounds.

:ne: 49 ** 297 Sam Fender – Seventeen Going Under

49-

4th, 2021

At 49 ‘Seventeen Going Under’ debuts high and is the 5th highest new entry this year. The song finished in 4th place in the 2021 heat and had a direct route in to the final. The song has become massive for Sam Fender when this became massive on TikTok and it went on to become his biggest hit to date, even managing to crack the top 5 officially. Sam had a big first album, however with the success of ‘Seventeen Going Under’ and his second album has cemented him as one of the biggest UK acts at the moment. Its good to see this reaching the top 50 and will be interesting to see if it manages to continue to replicate this success in the future.

 48 30 297 Dua Lipa – Be The One

48-52-33-30-48-

5th, 2017

At 48 is the first of 4 Dua songs to make it to the top 50. ‘Be The One’ drops 18 places to hit its second lowest ranking. The song has managed to always make it through to the final round and barring 1 year has always made the top 50. Taken from Dua’s first album, ‘Be The One’ was her first top 10 hit. It feels In some ways that her second album/ singles have overshadowed her first era, so its good to see this song still so popular. Dua has 3 songs still in the running; all of which are from her ‘Future Nostalgia’ album.

 47 68 298 Avicii (feat. Aloe Blacc) – Wake Me Up

174-374-368-373-35-239-150-68-47-

11th, 2013 | 16th, SF1

At 47 ‘Wake Me Up’ takes a big climb to hit its second highest ranking to date. The song reached the final round for the first time after Avicii’s death and managed to get to 35th place. The following year it dropped to 239 before taking a series of climbs in the subsequent years. ‘Wake Me Up’ made the finals for only the second time last year where it finished in 68th place, however this year manages to go even further. I wouldn’t say this is my favourite Avicii track, however its certainly his biggest and it dominated when it was first released. Next year will be its final year on ROTD, so it will be interesting to see if it manages to reach a new peak.

 46 60 305 Billie Eilish – Bad Guy

100-60-46-

3rd, 2019

Round out this section is ‘Bad Guy’ notches up another massive climb this year to reach its highest placement to date. 2 years ago it finished in 100th place in the final before climbing to 60 last year and this year manages to crack the top 50. ‘Bad Guy’ was released in 2019 and has gone on to become one of Billie’s biggest hits, extremely catchy and still a bop. In Billie terms, ‘Bad Guy’ is her third highest placed song and she still has 2 songs still to go, the song gained 19 votes in total which is more than some songs which made the top 20 (and even top 10).

Edited by ElectroBoy

Crazy to see Last Man In Earth outperform even Seventeen Going Under from the 2021 intake! I like all 5 of the songs that have just fallen, though since this rate introduced me to Saint Claude by CATQ, that's now become my favourite song by her instead of Tilted.
Happy with top 50 for Seventeen Going Under, I don't think I'll ever manage that with another of my nominations in the same year :D glad Wake Me Up continued its rebound too.
  • Author

very pleasing to see Avicii climb again this year, it was beginning to look like the #35 peak for Wake Me Up was just a fluke so it's great to see it back in the top 50, here's hoping it can re-peak next year as it'll likely be the last chance for any Avicii song to scale the heights of top 40 given his later material isn't so well-regarded by the forum.

I'm not huge on Seventeen Going Under but it is a very good song by standards of its genre so I can't begrudge it seemingly becoming a future classic and making the top 50 here. nice to see 'Tilted' remaining stable too.

'Seventeen Going Under' remains a solidly 7.5/10 song at best for me but that seems like a fair enough position for it really, I wouldn't have been surprised if it was even higher than that.

Yay at Chris re-entering the top 50 also ~ Pretty consisten runs for both that and 'Be The One'.

I can't believe people hold such overplayed songs like Bad Guy and Wake Me Up in high regard lol
Aww, I was hoping Bad Guy would be higher. It's one of the best pop songs that's made it's way through to me through my absorption of the last few years, got an absolutely outstanding beat for the dancefloor. Good position for Language though
