I'd say the big one for me since I have been following the charts would be 'Give Me All Your Luvin''. I don't think it ever occurred to me that a Madonna lead single could miss the Top 10, never mind just scrap the Top 40 (I know it was chart ineligible for its debut week and could have appeared much higher, but still far worse than any lead single since 'Everybody'). It received good support from Capital (I know Radio 1 snubbed it from their playlist though) and there was big hype as there always is for a new Madonna single, so I've always put down the lack of success to the song's quality, but I certainly would have expected better than what it did regardless.

Not so much surprising than it is annoying, but 'Rebel Heart' being knocked off midweek #1 by Sam Smith and 'Madame X' ending up against Bruce Springsteen are two chart moments that stick in my head.

TAB not reaching the top 10.

It had huge success state side but stalled here, it is better than many of her top 10 hits.

Frozen sales and number 1 her first since vogue!

Give it 2 Me i thought would have been a bigger hit!

Express Yourself not being that huge.

Yeah, definitely 'Give Me All Your Luvin's performance and Rebel Heart being denied #1 were shockers.

I suppose 'Miles Away' being a #39 smash, but that was such a low-key release they practically didn't even bother with.

'American Life' being denied #1 at the very last minute was a huge shock for me at the time.

I also thought 'Sorry' would be top 5, but didn't expect that to go to #1 so was a very pleasant surprise.

I had no idea American Life came so close to #1! I believe it would have become the first song to drop from #1 to out of the top 10 (#12) in that case so it’s probably best she doesn’t have that record

Give Me All Your Luvin was shite though. I'm not surprised at that. More surprised it managed to top 10 in the US despite being 'derivative'!

Probably! Although maybe the extra publicity from being #1 might have kept it from falling so sharply back then, who knows?

I think at that point I was surprised by just how badly it did, or moreover that Madonna had stopped getting support from the likes of Radio 1. I assumed she was powerful and untouchable enough for that not to happen!

Mind you, she had been away for quite a long time and coming back with that wasn't exactly the greatest idea. Plus she'd obviously lost her drive and motivation too.

I kinda think that that being what she picked didn't help with R1. If she'd led with GGW that would have been more expected for both the sound of the time & her wheelhouse post Confessions & HC.

Everything about Erotica.

That the album didn't make No.1; that the lead single "only" made No.3 (we were used to leads going to No.1); that everything released after didn't make the Top.5

Everything about Bedtime Stories

That the lead single "only" made No.5; that Take a Bow didn't make the Top.10; that Human Nature and Bedtime Story missed the Top 40 in the US

You Must Love Me plummeting after entering and peaking at No.10 - only spending 3 weeks in the Top 40

Everything about Ray of Light

That she got good reviews again; that Frozen went straight to No.1; that she got 5 Top 10 singles again

Everything about American Life

That the lead single peaked at No.37 in the US; that Hollywood and all other singles didn't make the Top 100 in the US

Miles Away making No.39 in the UK. That had never happened before.

Give Me All Your Luvin' being a big flop in the UK. It was a lead single for crying out loud.

Girl Gone Wild not reversing the chart fortunes for MDNA.

That'll do for now :)

'Take a Bow' is a really peculiar case, breaking Madonna's record breaking string of consecutive Top 10 hits in the UK yet being a multi-week #1 in the US. I've never been able to put my finger on what went wrong in the UK but perhaps I should be asking what went right in the US? The song gradually climbed up the chart before reaching #1 in its 11th week; I guess radio must have been all over it as that Babyface style of R&B was massive in the US, to a much greater degree than the UK, which will have helped it keep gaining exposure. It was also performed at the American Music Awards.

'American Life' was indeed #1 all week and ended up losing out by 2.5k to 'Make Luv', which kept hold of #1 with 32.5k (the lowest for a #1 of 2003, so Madonna was probably quite lucky she achieved #2). 'Make Luv' sold 43k the previous week, I think people had little doubt Madonna wouldn't have been able to overcome it, even with the mixed reactions to the song and the controversy surrounding the video.

Probably! Although maybe the extra publicity from being #1 might have kept it from falling so sharply back then, who knows?

I feel like it missing out on #1 gave it publicity too. People just weren't here for it.

Yeah I was quite shocked I thought Madonna was basically untouchable at that point and would always be an easy top 10 with pretty much any release. I did think it served her right for releasing such a shite song though lol. No doubt it would have flopped state side too if she hadn’t had the Super Bowl.

Sorry - Love this song but didn’t expect it to reach no1 after hung up!

Take a bow - stalling at only no16. I thought it would have made T10 in the UK

Deeper & deeper - Only peaking at no6. An absolute classic!

Living for love - Should have easily outpeaked no26.
