I wasn't sure where to put this so thought maybe it would be a good idea to have general discussion threads for the decades  when there are random things you want to talk about but they don't quite fit existing threads. Feel free to move elsewhere if not.

Anyway, a heads up that BBC 6Music is having a 1980s day today

The back-to-back of Prince's 'Raspberry Beret' and Depeche Mode's 'Master and Servant' just now has put me in the best mood for work *.*

All of the songs played so far can be found in one place here

(edit: Lauren just said 90s and 00s days are to follow as well :cheer:)

ooh You Gave Me Love is a total stomper, love that.

I hope they are playing stuff by The Associates given Alan Rankine's death. Party Fears Two top of the list....!

Just heard 'I Wonder If I Take You Home' by Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam for the first time. Today I learned that the chorus of 'Don't Phunk With My Heart' by the Black Eyed Peas is an interpolation

I'm not sure about today but they definitely played 'Party Fears Two' yesterday!

Thanks for the heads up!

No worries, glad I happened to spot it on twitter this morning as my radio listening habits are pretty sporadic.

Parties Fears Two still sounds fantastic even now. The Story Of The Blues by Wah! (in the charts forty years ago today) is even better so I hope they played that.

2 top classics there no question.... :)

They showed a 1985 TOTP repeat tonight (along with a 30 year anniversary clip show style episode + 1979) during the wait for the 1994 shows to kick off.

The highlight for me was Tears for Fears performing 'Shout'

Tears For Fears are always worth listening to. The fact that The Hurting is 40 years old this year makes me feel very old

Classic. I was surveying Dorset roads back when that was a hit, the video is worth checking out it was filmed at Durdle Dore, Jurassic Coast icon and a good place to stop for sandwiches in the van (sadly didnt catch them filming it)

I automatically get them recorded on the planner looking forward to the 1985 episode - is the next single after ‘Shout’ ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’?

I think Songs from the Big Chair is the only album of theirs that I've heard in full, must expand that.

Oh yes I remember watching the video recently - I think it was a bonus pick during one of the #1 Albums sessions. Neat anecdote *.*

That's right! What a classic, love that it has shown incredible endurance with streaming audiences nowadays

Currently relaxing with MTV 80s on after spending the afternoon out with a friend. Now playing: '99 Red Balloons'

ironically I was with a friend on Saturday and played Nena too. What a classic.

xx

80's (not being born during it obviously) related memories of watching the every number 1's of the 80's on the music channels in 2004 and the main ones I was watching were 1983 and 84 on holiday in Devon. It was there I was first introduced to so many classics for the first time.. 'Two Tribes', 'The Reflex', 'Freedom'.

Also 'Shout' is fantastic <3

^ hooray for Nena's recent impact on both of our lives then *.* my music channel experience growing up wasn't very 80s-centric (either current stuff, 2000s or 90s) but diving in to the Now series right from the beginning changed everything and a synth fanatic was soon born

Appreciation for this awesome cover that hit #1 in 1981 (Tainted Love/Prince Charming/this - what a back-to-back run!!) as it's finally been added to streaming services

Yesterday's TOTP from 1986 had an iconic Top 2 - in fact the whole Top 6 was pretty strong:

1 Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls

2 A-Ha - The Sun Always Shines On TV

3 Bronski Beat - Hit That Perfect Beat

4 Dire Straits - Walk Of Life

5 Feargal Sharkey - You Little Thief

6 Cherrelle with Alexander O'Neil - Saturday Love

PSB's video was played as was Dire Straits' with the sporting gaffes, A-Ha's and the #6 song were performed, and Bronski Beat were played over the end credits. That just leaves Feargal Sharkey who wasn't featured - the perfect opportunity to post this:

^ Ha you beat me to it, was just catching up on TOTP 1986 and came here to post that the top 2 was amazing *.* that episode aired on my mum's birthday originally so lucky her!

Morten Harket though

Love the 80s TOTP imo better than the current 90s episodes, glad I watched it religiously from 1980-89!
