They skipped one last week, so one more to come (with Parklife at 10)! Thanks Gezza!

No idea why one was skipped?

I read online that the quality of the footage was too poor to broadcast.

Before seeing that I'd wondered if it was something to do with permission from the estate of Malcolm McLaren, who they said was hosting that skipped episode.

I guess Kylie had been expected to mount a challenge to Love Is All Around? Its sales consistency and how far ahead it was of the market is astonishing, when you compare it to, say, Umbrella by Rihanna which got very lucky on a number of close occasions to get its 10-week stretch at No.1.

Two classic No.10s in that batch with Live Forever and Parklife!

Regulate and 7 Seconds aside, there haven’t been many songs I’d have rather have made #1.

Ah thanks!

Kylie was expected to be number 1 until the Wets announced the deletion of LIAA :(

BBC Four are skipping the 25 August 1994 #TOTP. This has nothing to do with the presenter (Malcolm McLaren) or the artists, but because the copies held in the archive are not in broadcastable condition. Helpfully, someone's put a rough version on YouTube!

7 Seconds, Live Forever and Parklife are 3 of my favourite songs of all time. Good to see 1994 picking up after a bit of a slump.

'7 seconds' is one of the first songs I remember from my childhood, great song. 'Live Forever' - also great and 'Parklife' is good fun.

'Eighteen Strings' by Tinman is with indie rock, eurodance synths and rap verse, like the music of the mid-90s condensed into one song.

Nice to finally have some classics in the top 10 after the summer lull

7 Seconds is just incredible, should have been #1 all those months rather than Wet wet wet

Live Forever and Parklfie are absolute classics too

Ah thanks!

Kylie wasn’t really close though. I was surprised how little she sold in retrospect as I loved Confide In Me and always thought it would have had a huge week one

Live Forever is all time great. I could never stand Parklife and would remove it from the album if I could.
We’re Blir and Oasis getting much radio support by this stage or was it mainly R1 and fanbase leading to the lower chart positions at this early time?

True, but I can remember it being expected at the time she would do it then the deletion of Love Is All Around was announced and gave them a boost.

If it wasn’t for that, it would’ve been closer.

I don't think I'd actually heard Confide In Me anywhere before it debuted on the chart show. I remember it quite clearly as I'd completely lost interest in her and I was amazed by how good it was. So perhaps I should take back the first week sales comment as possibly it could have not appealed to some die hard Kylie fans whilst people like me weren't actually that interested before we heard it.

10TH SEPTEMBER

There’s a lot going on in the chart this week as the chart suddenly wakes from its summer slumber. Firstly the headline, that’s that “Love Is All Around” remains the UK No 1 single for a 15th week, just one week away from equalling Bryan Adams’s all time record of 16! Furthermore in a bolt from the blue Wet, wet, wet’s record label have announced that they are deleting the single whilst it is No 1 such is their desire to move on. That’s an unprecedented decision in the history of the charts for a track which is clearly still so popular at retail to be suddenly deleted. Its sales were still down to 65,000 in any case (a 15% drop) but it still had an easy ride. As to whether it can equal Bryan Adams’ remarkable feat therefore looks doubtful for two other reasons.

Firstly the return of Kylie Minogue! She enters the brave new world of post S/A/W with her first single for Deconstruction “Confide In Me”, it is, as you might expect, a departure for the Aussie with Brothers In Rhythm taking up the production reins and move away from the pure pop which made her name. She’s been met with critical praise for the single which berths at No 2 (46,000), if it goes no further it will be her 7th single to peak at the position and by way of co-incidence it will also mean that on every occasion that Wet, wet, wet have been No 1 they have held a Minogue single off the top spot. In 1988 it was “With A Little Help From My Friends” depriving “Got To Be Certain, then in 1992 “Goodnight Girl” halted “Give Me Just A Little More Time”- could she finally get revenge next week when a second CD is available with new additional tracks?

It’s one of two massive hits which have been dominating the European charts over the summer and now it finally hits our shores. Corona’s “The Rhythm Of The Night” spent 8 weeks at No 1 in their native Italy becoming a pan European hit whilst getting into all our heads on holiday. It’s been remixed by the Rapino Brothers for the UK market and the outfit is fronted by Olga Maria De Souza though rumour has it she isn’t the vocalist, that is actually Giovanna Bersola and thus follows the rich traditional in dance of having frontwoman who don’t actually sing the songs. It enters at No 9 (23,000) but watch out this has comes hotly tipped as a future chart topper!

Youssou N’Dour & Neneh Cherry are on the move again 4-3 (42,000) increasing sales enough to overturn Red Dragon who dip 2-4 (42,000) but Boyz II Men would have been expecting more than a rise of 6-5 (39,000) and look to be running out of steam already.

Let Loose drop 3-6 (33,000) and China Black finally surrender 5-7 (32,000) with All-4-One cursing 7-10 (22,000). Warren G & Nate Dogg reverse 9-8 (23,000) however and sell their 200,000th copy.

It’s an historic chart for another reason with the Sunday Trading Act coming into force last week meaning that Sunday past was the first time that many record outlets were open for business so you can now buy your singles 7 days a week- we’ll see if it lifts sales in the near future.

So with Corona and Kylie applying pressure can Wet Wet Wet make it a record equaling 16th week at the top? Well you’ll also need to consider Whigfield’s “Saturday Night” which has been in the top 200 for the last 7 weeks on import, a rarity these days which indicates that it will fly off the shelves as it’s released this week. All eyes on the No 1 spot next week then!

1- LOVE IS ALL AROUND- Wet, wet, wet (65,000)

2- CONFIDE IN ME- Kylie Minogue (46,000)

3- 7 SECONDS- Youssou N’Dour Ft Neneh Cherry (42,000)

4- COMPLIMENTS ON YOUR KISS- Red Dragon Ft Brian & Tony Gold (42,000)

5- I’LL MAKE LOVE TO YOU- Boyz II Men (39,000)

6- CRAZY FOR YOU- Let Loose (33,000)

7- SEARCHING- China Black (32,000)

8- REGULATE- Warren G & Nate Dogg (23,000)

9- THE RHYTHM OF THE NIGHT- Corona (23,000)

10- I SWEAR- All-4-One(22,000)

Back in 1984 Neil created chart history when his debut hit went in at No 5, a record equalled by Bomb The Bass 4 years later and then broken when Partners In Kryme went straight in at No 4 in July 1990. Vanilla Ice’s debut at No 3 in November 1990 re-wrote history and then Gabrielle came from nowhere to smash in at No 2 last year but until this week no act had ever debuted at No 1 with their debut single (save charity singles).

The fact that that single is by a female solo act means that Whigfield is only the second female soloist ever to turn the trick but indeed that’s exactly what Sannie Charlotte Carlson has done with the song “Saturday Night”. It’s co-written by Larry Pignagnoli who also had a hand in Spagna’s “Call Me” back in 1987 and has become a massive hit across Europe this summer even garnering its own dance routine along the way. As detailed last week the song has been in the extended chart for 7 weeks even making No 79 before it got its full UK release whereupon the song has entered the charts “officially” at No 1 on a sale of 149,000- the biggest 7 day tally of the year so far! Finally she’s also the first act from Denmark to hit the top here- what a week for her.

Its arrival put paid to Wet, Wet, Wet’s ambition of matching the 16wk reign of Bryan Adams as they are forced 1-2 with “Love Is All Around” after 15 weeks at the top. That despite a hike of 54% in sales to a round 100,000, buyers obviously clambering to get their copy before the single is deleted this week which has resulted in the highest weekly sale for the track in 9 weeks. It also means that the single surpasses the Bryan Adams in one respect, and maybe the most important one, yes on sales of 1,578,000 it is now not only the biggest selling single of 1990s so far but the biggest seller since Band Aid was released almost 10 years ago!

With all the excitement in the top 2 it’s easy to overlook the new entry at No 3 (68,000) which comes from Luther Vandross & Mariah Carey. The cover of the 1981 #7 hit “Endless Love” was originally performed by Lionel Richie & Diana Ross and is taken from Vandross’ new album “Songs” which is a covers album. The suggestion of the album came from Sony records president (and Carey’s husband) Tommy Mottola who then teamed him with Carey to give the album a high profile duet and it’s certainly worked a treat! It seems that Vandross can only reach the top 10 in duet with a female following on from 1992’s “Best Things In Life Are Free” with Janet Jackson, but it’s a 7th top 10 single for Carey who remains very hot property.

Becoming (probably) the biggest band on the planet in 1992/93 after the success of “Automatic For The People” R.E.M’s follow up album has been one of the most hotly anticipated and indeed “Monster” will be released next month. Lead single “What’s The Frequency Kenneth?” makes a splash this week at No 9 (23,000), it takes its title from an incident back in 1986 when reporter Dan Rather was attacked and the assailant repeated the phrase over and over but refers thematically to the gap in generations and one trying to understand the other. It’s only the band’s third top 10 hit but it’s albums they’re used to shifting.

A big name in “jungle” music General Levy features on the new M-Beat track “Incredible” which has been remixed from the version which made No 39 in the summer. It’s being hailed as the first Jungle top 10 track as it wriggles 11-10 (19,000).

Kylie drops back 2-4 (61,000) as her sales improve 33% week on week, but Corona climb 9-5 (49,000). Boyz II Men don’t look like repeating their US success as they dip back 5-6 (43,000), Youssou N’Dour & Neneh Cherry fall back 3-7 (36,000) and Red Dragon dry up 4-8 (24,000).

1- SATURDAY NIGHT- Whigfield (149,000)

2- LOVE IS ALL AROUND- Wet, wet, wet (100,000)

3- ENDLESS LOVE- Mariah Carey & Luther Vandross (68,000)

4- CONFIDE IN ME- Kylie Minogue (61,000)

5- RHYTHM OF THE NIGHT- Corona (49,000)

6- I’LL MAKE LOVE TO YOU- Boyz II Men (43,000)

7- 7 SECONDS- Youssou N’Dour Ft Neneh Cherry (36,000)

8- COMPLIMENTS ON YOUR KISS- Red Dragon Ft Brian & Tony Gold (24,000)

9- WHAT’S THE FREQUENCY KENNETH- R.E.M (23,000)

10- INCREDIBLE- M Beat Ft General Levy (19,000)

24TH SEPTEMBER

After last week’s busy chart it’s much quieter this week with only one new track in the top 10. Most punters have been busy purchasing Whigfield’s “Saturday Night” which sold an astonishing 220,000 copies last week helped by the blitz of publicity surrounding her history making debut at the top last week. Some newspapers have even been printing a step by step guide to learning the associated dance moves so that every nightclub in the land can join in of a weekend, that sale is the highest for a chart topper in about three years (since Queen in late 91 to be exact) but excluding the Christmas period you’d have to go back 10 years to Stevie Wonder to find a higher 7 day tally. It does however register as the highest weekly sale by a female solo act ever.

If you’re a Bon Jovi fan then you have a Greatest Hits set to look forward to next month with a couple of new tracks to entice buyers, one of them is “Always” which was written for the film “Romeo Is Bleeding” but when the band saw the film they weren’t impressed so withheld the track. It now equals their highest ever entry into the chart set by “Keep The Faith” in 1992 by debuting at No 5 (51,000), it’s their 5th top 10 single but they’ve been higher once- with 1986’s “Livin On A Prayer” which peaked at No 4.

With Whigfield at No 1 the European invasion is continued by Corona who charge 5-2 (65,000) bypassing Luther Vandross & Mariah Carey who are stranded at No 3 (63,000) this week. With stocks dwindling Wet, wet, wet drop 2-4 (58,000) and Kylie retreats again 4-6 (50,000), Boyz II Men still rule the roost in the US but here they fall 6-7 (37,000) as that second album debuts disappointingly at No 21.

M Beat Featuring General Levy rise 10-8 (30,000) above a falling Youssou N’Dour & Neneh Cherry 7-9 (29,000) and R.E.M 9-10 (21,000). Suede’s much touted new single featuring their new member Richard Oakes arrives at a lowly No 18- has their bubble burst already?

1- SATURDAY NIGHT- Whigfield (220,000)

4- LOVE IS ALL AROUND- Wet, wet, wet (58,000)

5- ALWAYS- Bon Jovi (51,000)
