You forget how sales could really drop off a cliff back then. Sure 81k to 34k in its 3rd week. Saturday Night 114k to 66k in its 6th week.

Compounded by the artificial High of half term holidays which made the drop worse. In take that's case they also had a boost from a 2nd cd ersion in week 2 which had worn off in week 3.

Praise be to the half term holidays which this week sees sales up all round with every single in the top 10 benefiting Pato Banton’s position at the top was never in Doubt as his sales swelled to 113,000 which is the highest tally in 11 years for Robin and Ali Campbell, in fact since the 121,000 that “Red Red Wine” sold W/E 24/09/1983.

Bon Jovi have another excellent week with “Always” reviving 3-2 (53,000) as the track roars over the 400,000 mark, on the album charts they remain at No 1 for a third week even holding off the new Madonna album, meanwhile Whigfield’s “Saturday Night” falls 2-3 (50,000) and has now sold 964,000 with the million mark a maximum of a fortnight away surely?

Highest new hit of the week comes from Eternal who have had a great 1994 racking up four top 20 singles and an album “Always & Forever” which has sold over 400,000 copies. A fifth single from it “Oh Baby I” has been remixed (although you might be hard pushed to notice) and teamed with new mixes of “Sweet Funky Thing” from the album, in truth these are going down a treat in the clubs and might account for some of the push behind this single. Anyway it is their 4th top 10 single as it smashes in at No 7 (32,000).

Fronted by 11 yr old Haydon and including Maxi Priest’s 12 yr old son Ryan, most of Ultimate Kaos were backing singers and dancers for Sinitta at one point but they’ve been helped considerably by supporting Take That on their tour this year which gave them the necessary exposure to have a hit single. “Some Girls” moves 17-9 (25,000) and overtakes their former tour mates as Take That drop to No 11.

Michelle Gayle can’t be stopped it seems, she rises 5-4 (37,000) with “Sweetness” proving to have more legs than many thought, R Kelly follows her up the charts 6-5 (34,000), and even Snap! enjoy the spoils 8-6 (33,000).

Cyndi Lauper falls 7-8 (27,000) and final Lisa Leob holds anchor spot with 25,000 sales marking her 6th week of top ten action despite never having gone higher than No 6.

1- BABY COME BACK- Pato Banton Ft Robin & Ali Campbell (113,000)

2- ALWAYS- Bon Jovi (53,000)

3- SATURDAY NIGHT- Whigfield (50,000)

Pato-Banton.png

Another week of Pato Banton domination with nothing in the chart at the moment looking like it could depose him. “Baby Come Back” is cooling through with 94,000 buyers this week and with sales of 461,000 it is already one of the top 10 best sellers of the year!

The rest of the field are in reality providing no competition at all. Bon Jovi are dethroned on the album chart by Nirvana, but “Always” continues to occupy the theoretical challenge at No 2 (44,000) with R Kelly floating 5-3 (42,000), notionally ahead of Eternal who are also up 7-4 (42,000) to equal their best ever.

The next chart topper could come from (MC Sar &) The Real McCoy with their euro hit “Another Night” which was a No 61 single when first released exactly a year ago but has gone on to become a major hit on the continent in the interim and currently No 3 in the US. Remixed now by Armand Van Helden among others it drives 17-7 (33,000), in true Euro pop style the vocals aren’t provided by the singer in the video.

Starting out her musical career composing jingles, Sheryl Crow toured with Michael Jackson on his “Bad” tour providing vocals to “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” on many occasions, she’s now got round to producing her first album “Tuesday Night Music Club” which was out back in February and hung around for just a week at No 68 giving us the singles “What Can I Do For You” (No 84), “Run Baby Run” (No 83) and “Leaving Las Vegas” (No 66) but it is getting a re-issue in an fortnight. Why? Because fourth single “All I Wanna Do” is finally doing the magic for her, it’s No 2 in the US behind Boyz II Men, and here it climbs 12-8 (29,000), the chorus may be her own creation but the verses are lifted pretty much wholesale from the poem “Fun” by Wyn Cooper.

“Saturday Night” sold an agonising 34,000 copies last week as it falls 3-5 bringing it to just 2,000 short of the million mark!, Michelle Gayle finally accepts defeat 4-6 (34,000), Snap! reverse 6-9 (27,000) and Ultimate Kaos dip 9-10 (23,000)

Think Twice watch - now at number 22!

Also, further down the chart was Berri’s Sunshine After The Rain, but with New Atlantic as the main artist. Clearly she dropped them before re - releasing by herself!

Shame we missed Another Night, which I guess was played in the skipped episodes.
Shame we missed Another Night, which I guess was played in the skipped episodes.

Yes was played when it entered at number 7.

Great dance classic!

Another Night  one of my favourite eurodance songs, the UK version in particular

Yes, one of my favourites too, I didn't know it was so big in America, I would love something like it to make the charts now

Also, guess what Christmas classic is coming next week…..!

:jameela:

We have 2 big Christmas songs on both shows next Friday night.

Perfect for the hot weather outside !!

'Another Night' is a tune indeed :music:

I didn't realise quite how big 'Baby Come Back' was this year! Some great sales for that at the top.

Loved Another Night as a teen and even bought the album

But myfav has to be Sheryl, great single and even better album

Pato Banton’s “Baby Come Back” is still on cruise control at No 1 easily scoring a fourth week but sales are down again this time by 18% to 77,000 but it does bound over the half million mark which is excellent going.

It’s unlikely to do a fifth week in the main because (MC Sar &) The Real McCoy rocket 7-2 (57,000) and will most likely top the charts in 7 days time if current trends continue. It proves the power of re-issuing tracks if they fail the first time around, it’s a lesson also learned by Baby D with their single “Let Me Be Your Fantasy”, which dates back to 1992 when it was a club hit, it didn’t make the charts on the production house label which is owned by former popstar Phil Fearon. His wife is actually lead singer Dee Galdes-Fearon by way of explaining how it all comes together. Subsequent singles “Casanova” and “Destiny” did become minor chart hits but failed to make the top 60, it was however “Fantasy” which remained their most recalled hit and became a cult track which has now been leased to Whigfield’s label Systematic for a remix and it debuts at No 3 (36,000). It has an outside chance of making the top if The Real McCoy don’t make it next week.

Gearing up for the release of their third album M People are back after 20 months away, a new single “Sight For Sore Eyes” makes a suitably high debut in the charts at No 8 (27,000) to launch the campaign, that’s their 6th top 10 single (in a row depending on how you view the remix EP Elegantly American” last year). Its ability to progress any further will depend on how the album “Bizarre Fruit” goes- it’s out this week!

new-order-chikys.jpg

Remixed by Paul Oakenfold and Mike Drake New Order’s “True Faith” was a No 4 hit back in 1987 and has now been overhauled to pre-empt a greatest hits collection by the group in a fortnight. Although it is the sixth time the group have been in the top 10 they’ve only done it with four songs, “Regret”,”World In Motion”, two different mixes of “Blue Monday” and now with two versions of “True Faith”, it smashes in at No 9 (22,000)- the highest debut the group have ever achieved outside of "World In Motion".

Bon Jovi return to No 1 on the album chart but “Always” looks like a tired single now dropping 2-4 (34,000), it fends off Sheryl Crow who’s on the move 8-5 (34,000) which also pushes Eternal’s “Oh Baby I” down 4-6 (32,000). R Kelly is also in severe decline 3-7 (27,000) and Whigfield drops 5-10 (18,000) but is now an official million seller as it leaves the top 10. It’s only the third million seller by a solo female act following Jennifer Rush and Whitney Houston into the ranks. Next week it’s that time again- our annual round up of the contenders for Xmas No 1!

1- BABY COME BACK- Pato Banton Ft Robin & Ali Campbell (77,000)

2- ANOTHER NIGHT- (MC Sar &) The Real McCoy (57,000)

3- LET ME BE YOUR FANTASY- Baby D (36,000)

4- ALWAYS- Bon Jovi (34,000)

5- ALL I WANNA DO- Sheryl Crow (34,000)

6- OH BABY I- Eternal (32,000)

7- SHE’S GOT THAT VIBE- R Kelly (27,000)

8- SIGHT FOR SORE EYES- M People (27,000)

9- TRUE FAITH 94- New Order (22,000)

10- SATURDAY NIGHT- Whigfield (18,000)

baby-d-896205698.jpg

Springing from 3-1 this week Baby D finally replace Pato Banton at the top of the charts on a sale of just 75,000, it gives the Systematic label a second chart topper in a row following in the footsteps of Whigfield.

Battling all the way to the end Pato Banton eventually prevailed over (MC Sar &) The Real McCoy selling 61,000 to 59,000. The top 3 were so far ahead of the rest of the field that fourth place sold a mere 33,000, that was Sheryl Crow who though rising 5-4 lost sales in part as her album is getting pushed now and re-enters at No 22.

louis_armstrong_1-300x300.jpg

The power of the TV advert proves its potency once again with the current Guinness advert utilising Louis Armstrong’s 1969 single “We Have All The Time In The World” which was used in the James Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”. Armstrong has of course been dead for 23 years now but made the top 10 on four occasions in his lifetime most notably on the chart topper “What A Wonderful World” in 1968, his current single rises 12-5 (28,000) following the label being inundated with requests for the single which led to the re-issue.

hqdefault.jpg

Jimmy Nail’s pottered chart history continues, he’s pulled a hit single from almost all the show he’s starred in, “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” (whilst he was in “Auf Wiedershen Pet”) made No 3, “Ain’t No Doubt went all the way to No 1 (whilst in “Spender”) and now “Crocodile Shoes” spawns a hit of the same title for the Geordie. The show follows Nail as Jed Shepperd trying to make it in the music business and is a hit for BBC 1, an album of songs performed in the show is released this week but the title track debuts at No 8 (26,000).

pearl-jam.jpg

The explosion of grunge in the early 90s spawned Pearl Jam as one of the movement’s pivotal bands, the album “Ten” has sold consistently since its release and it, along with follow up “Vs” have made them one of the biggest bands in the US even if that hasn’t been quite duplicated in the UK. Third album “Vitalogy” is primed for release this week but the lead single “Spin The Black Circle” enters at No 10 (19,000) their biggest hit so far. It is an homage to the Vinyl format which the group love and insist their albums are released on, the promo once again doesn’t feature the band who are currently refusing to appear in their promos.

M People rise 8-6 (28,000) impacted by the album arriving at No 4, Eternal drop 6-7 (27,000) and Bon Jovi fall 4-9 (20,000) but still have the best selling album in the land. This week sees the release of the first new Stone Roses single in 4 years- No 1 all sewn up?

Time to look at this year’s contenders for the Christmas No 1?

POWER RANGER- Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

This year’s kids cartoon phenomenon brings us a single in time for the big day- well Christmas is for the kids after all? Favourite with the bookies.

WHATEVER- Oasis

The indie champions of the year, this isn’t on the debut album and so could therefore be their biggest hit yet- maybe No 1?

STAY ANOTHER DAY- East 17

“Steam” didn’t quite perform as expected, can this do better- a suitable ballad for the festive season.

COTTON EYE JOE- Rednex

Already a major hit all over Europe this is now released just in time for those parties….watch it fly into the charts!

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU- Mariah Carey

Carey’s had a fantastic 1994 and what better way to round it off than with the Xmas chart topper- more sleigh bells than you can possibly want,

THEM GIRLS THEM GIRLS- Zig & Zag

Everyone loves Zig & Zag right? Mixing dancehall with dance this infectious number is sure to be a hit?

PLEASE COME HOME FOR CHRISTMAS- Bon Jovi

A cover of Charles Brown’s 1960 recording could prove dynamite for the boys who are riding high in the album charts, a fact which could dent sales for this

ALL I HAVE TO DO IS DREAM- Cliff Richard & Phil Everly

Between them they’ve had 17 chart toppers but Cliff & Phil have teamed up for Christmas on this cover of the Everly Brothers classic from 1958.

ANOTHER DAY- Whigfield

Follow up to the million selling “Saturday Night” this soundalike could do well if you’ve not had enough of it….

WHIGGLE IN LINE- Black Duck

And if you haven’t then why not try this “re-interpretation” of the track fusing dancehall with “Saturday Night”.

LOVE SPREADS- Stone Roses

Tipped by many as an instant No 1 when it hits the charts next week it might end up getting out of the traps too far ahead of the big day to still be a contender. Despite the release of new Suede, Blur, and Oasis albums this year, nothing has rivaled the anticipation of the second album!

1- LET ME BE YOUR FANTASY- Baby D (75,000)

2- BABY COME BACK- Pato Banton Ft Robin & Ali Campbell (61,000)

3- ANOTHER NIGHT – (MC Sar &) The Real McCoy (59,000)

4- ALL I WANNA DO- Sheryl Crow (33,000)

5- WE HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD- Louis Armstrong (28,000)

6- SIGHT FOR SORE EYES- M People (28,000)

7- OH BABY I- Eternal (27,000)

8- CROCODILE SHOES- Jimmy Nail (26,000)

9- ALWAYS- Bon Jovi (20,000)

10- SPIN THE BLACK CIRCLE- Pearl Jam (19,000)

The 1994 rerelease was the first time I’d heard True Faith, it went on to become one of my favourite singles ever and the following best of compilation sparked my interest in getting all of their back catalogue. Such a great band.

Let Me Be Your Fantasy  Another dance favourite from the year, it seemed like such a cool track at the time. I remember being gutted when Another Night fell to #3 this week

Let Me Be Your Fantasy  utter classic and by far the best number 1 of the year.
