Shame I'll Stand By You didn't go higher after that great leap from No.26 to No.10, deserved way better.

So happy their comeback after like 8 years got top 10, rarely would happen nowadays!

It was a great comeback with a great song, totally deserved

what was undeserved was GA's awful cover going to #1 when the original only got to #10 :/

The top 4 this week all outsold Tony Di Bart’s chart topping tally of 47,000 a week ago, that included Tony Di Bart himself who increased his sales by 13% to 53,000 but it couldn’t retain the top spot as it slacks 1-3. It is overtaken by not only by Manchester United who drive 8-2 (55,000) to score the biggest hit by an individual football team in the history of the charts! But also by Stiltskin who make the inevitable rise 5-1 (61,000) with “Inside”. That’s the fourth chart topper who can thank the Levi team for getting a No 1 at the second time of asking after The Clash, Ben E King, and Steve Miller Band. For Di Bart it means that he becomes the first act of 1994 to spend just 7 days at the top, a record he won’t much like.

Meanwhile the battle of the boybands continues with the lead single of the second album from East 17, they’ll be hoping that they can follow current leaders Take That to the top when the album appears, but for now the single “Around The World” arrives at No 7 (32,000). That’s the best start to any of their singles so far and proves they really have arrived as a chart force even if their debut album “Walthamstow” has only sold 250,000 copies.

The boys aren’t having it all their own way though, Eternal have rapidly emerged as the biggest all female group in the land as they now score a third top 10 single in just 7 months with “Just A Step From Heaven” rising 11-9 (21,000). It has sparked considerable interest in the album which only made No 9 at the start of the year but now gets a new promotional push as it shoots 51-5 to reach a new peak.

CJ Lewis relents 3-4 (47,000) and Crash Test Dummies fall 4-5 (35,000) but celebrate as their album debuts at No 2 behind Deacon Blue. More fallers come from Prince (2-6, 32,000), Clubhouse Featuring Carl (7-8, 24,000) and Erasure (6-10, 20,000).

1- INSIDE- Stiltskin (61,000)

2- COME ON YOU REDS- Manchester United Football Squad (55,000)

3- THE REAL THING- Tony Di Bart (53,000)

4- SWEETS FOR MY SWEET- CJ Lewis (47,000)

5- MMM MMM MMM MMM- Crash Test Dummies (35,000)

6- THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL IN THE WORLD- Prince (32,000)

7- AROUND THE WORLD- East 17 (32,000)

8- LIGHT MY FIRE- Clubhouse Ft Carl (24,000)

9- JUST A STEP FROM HEAVEN- Eternal (21,000)

Manchester-United-1994-Double.jpg

A week of record breaking occasion, just as they complete the double of FA Cup and Premiership in football Manchester United also get a treble of a kind by claiming the No 1 spot. “Come On You Reds” moves 2-1 on a sale of 77,000 impressive figures for an individual club single though of course the national side has scored two chart toppers with “Back Home” and “World In Motion”, their opponents in the final Chelsea also bag themselves a hit as they move 30-23 though you have to fancy that will progress no further. Status Quo will also doubtless be celebrating as the tune is based on “Burning Bridges”.

That’s all bad news for Stiltskin who cannot keep the spot for a second week with “Inside” dropping 1-2 despite an 18% increase to 72,000, its fightback toward the end of the week coming too late. East 17 move 7-4 (48,000) to equal the peak of their last single “It’s Alright”, at the moment however further advancement looks unlikely.

They’ve scored 6 previous top ten singles but none have debuted as high as No 4 for Wet, Wet, Wet but that’s exactly what their new single “Love Is All Around” has done. The original song was performed by The Troggs and went to No 5 in 1967, it’s now been covered by the Scots and included in the new Hugh Grant film “Four Weddings & A Funeral” which opened last Friday to glowing reviews- expect it to climb after the 39,000 it sold last week.

Lasting far longer than any of their critics thought 2 Unlimited are now on album number three and the hits keep on coming with “The Real Thing” debuting at No 9 (19,000). It’s their 8th top 10 single from ten releases, it is based on Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor” marrying together two very different genre’s, no-one can accuse them of not trying something new! The album of the same name is out next month.

bad-boys-inc-.jpg

Bad Boys Inc are leading the chasing pack in the boyband stakes behind Take That and East 17, their fourth hit “More To This World (West End Mix) becomes by far the biggest as it smashes in at No 10 (17,000). The four piece were put together by producer Ian Levine and have hit the top 30 with all their singles, the biggest of which “Don’t Talk About Love” made No 19 last summer, the debut album will be out next month and will house all the hits.

CJ Lewis drops 4-5 (34,000) but does better than Tony Di Bart who tumbles 3-6 (28,000) and Crash Test Dummies ponder 5-7 (23,000). Eternal are on the up however 9-8 (21,000).

1- COME ON YOU REDS- Manchester United Squad (77,000)

2- INSIDE- Stiltskin (72,000)

3- AROUND THE WORLD- East 17 (48,000)

4- LOVE IS ALL AROUND- Wet, wet, wet (39,000)

5- SWEETS FOR MY SWEET- CJ Lewis (34,000)

6- THE REAL THING- Tony Di Bart (28,000)

7- MMM MMM MMM MMM- Crash Test Dummies (23,000)

8- JUST A STEP FROM HEAVEN- Eternal (21,000)

9- THE REAL THING- 2 Unlimited (19,000)

10- MORE TO THIS WORLD- Bad Boys Inc (17,000)

Awful number 1. Football plus Status Quo does not a good song make!

That East 17 song is under-rated and actually decent.

Siltskin were another random no1!

Here comes ‘Love Is All Around’ the last long runner at no1 of the early decade!

loved the Stiltskin song back in the day, Wet Wet Wet on the other side that was a terrible song, it's not even a good cover

and I was quite a fan, really liked Goodnight Girl and some of the early singles

I like it, it’s undeniably a good song. I can’t remember the time when it was no1 so maybe that’s why I’ve not heard it overplayed!

Please don’t quote the whole post, sausage.

Yep 'Wishing I Was Lucky' is great.

I don't mind 'Love Is All Around' though.

It's like the ultimate wedding reception song.

At least a certain Danish mastermind came along to save us with a timeless classic 4 months down the line.

oh my was it really 4 months at #1? guess cos it didn't have a prent album to steal sales...

I like Love Is All Around, I think it's a well produced cover, although very overexposed of course. Even as a 7 year old I recall it being everywhere.

Crazy to have a football team go to No.1, good for Status Quo's wallets I guess, I picked up Now 1994 in a charity shop the other day and it was on there, never seen it on any other album before.

Not mad on the Stiltskin song, in fact I really can't even remember how it goes and have heard it a few times over the years. Weird only a live version is on Spotify.

Sad that the Quo were credited on the United song!

Come On You Reds was just credited to Manchester United Football Squad which means:

Most weeks at number 1 - UK chart history.

Manchester United 2 - Status Quo 1 !!!

Inside is a bit of a banger actually. That and The Real Thing is one of my favourite back to backs of relatively forgotten No 1s.

Widely tipped to make No 1 this week Wet, wet, wet can only move 4-2 (67,000) with a very healthy 73% sales hike, instead it is Manchester United Football Squad who retain pole position and they do with a more modest 10% increase of their own to 84,000- next week should be interesting! East 17 keep themselves nominally in the running holding at No 3 (56,000) but they aren’t posting big enough sales increases to look like a threat to Manchester United at the moment.

maxx.png

Maxx are German duo Samira Besic and Gary Bekoe who have scored a pan European hit with “Get-A-Way” which hit No 11 in their native country last Autumn. As has become common over the years for dance hits the producers behind the group have fronted the track (for promo purposes and in the video) with a model, Besic apparently having been told she is no longer required. Whatever the machinations behind the scenes the song shoots 13-5 (37,000) in its second week.

the-prodigy-1994.jpg

Gearing up to the release of their second album next month The Prodigy continue to rack up the hits with new single “No Good (Start The Dance)” debuting at No 9 (20,000) this week. The track features a sample of Kelly Charles 1987 single “You’re No Good For Me” and equals their highest ever debut position which was achieved by “Charly” three years ago, it’s the group’s 5th top ten hit from 7 full releases.

Stiltskin drop 2-4 (52,000) but better news for 2 Unlimited and Boys Inc Limited who both climb 9-6 (31,000) and 10-8 (24,000) respectively. Heading the wrong way are CJ Lewis 5-7 (26,000) and Eternal 8-10 (19,000).

1- COME ON YOU REDS- Manchester United Football Squad (84,000)

2- LOVE IS ALL AROUND- Wet wet wet (67,000)

3- AROUND THE WORLD- East 17 (56,000)

4- INSIDE- Stiltskin (52,000)

5- GET-A-WAY- Maxx (37,000)

6- THE REAL THING- 2 Unlimited (31,000)

8- MORE TO THIS WORLD- Bad Boys Inc (24,000)

9- NO GOOD (START THE DANCE)- The Prodigy (20,000)

10- JUST A STEP FROM HEAVEN- Eternal (19,000)
