Top points - rio309 25, Jester 23, !!! 19, RabbitFurCoat 19

This was the third single taken from Blur's eponymous fifth album. It went on to be used on the soundtrack to the film 'The Beach'. Blur still have one song left in this semi-final.

55. Morrissey - Suedehead 141pts

Writers - Morrissey, Stephen Street

Top points - Grandwicky 24, Jason 23, Mark223 23

This was Morrissey's debut solo single after the breakup of The Smiths, reaching a higher chart position than any of their singles. Morrissey was inspired lyrically by the 1970s suedehead subculture. Although sharing similarities to 1960s skinheads, suedeheads grew their hair longer and dressed more formally.

Morrissey the first non wild card then. No losses there from my perspective - lol at Dot not even fully backing his own horse.

From 1984, but not a hit until 1985, this was the only top 40 single for the Scottish duo. The fanfare at the start came from third movement of Sibelius's Symphony No. 5 - the Finale. Strawberry Switchblade split up just a year later.

53. A-ha - Hunting High And Low 150pts

Writer - Pål Waaktaar

Top points - King Rollo 24, dandy* 23, Bjork 23

You may have noticed we have been going back in time with each song today but that stops here as this was released two years after Since Yesterday. In the UK, it was the fourth single taken from A-ha's debut album. It wins a tie-break over Since Yesterday by 11 votes to 9.

I very nearly gave Strawberry Switchblade a point, which might have kept the reverse chronological run going (depending if anything's on 151 points). Morrissey's is the biggest loss for me so far, but not a major one - think I might find the other semi to be stronger overall.
Surprised Taylor got the last place, given the strong fanbase here!

Even Swifties can't enthusiastically support that particular song :kink: Definitely one of her worst and only here because ...ready for it is contractually obliged to give top marks to Taylor in any poll she is eligible for

None of my votes are out yet but 'Dy-Na-Mi-Tee' was the final song I cut (I actually originally had it at my 1 point then realised I somehow forgot to rank 'Around The World', good thing I double checked as that was in my top 3 ) The a-ha song is decent too.

Oh what a shame that Morrissey did badly :teresa:

Hunting High and Low is a big loss, such a gem from A-ha <3

love Morrissey-Suedehead too, was a great debut single

the rest is not great, that's one of my least fav Blur songs ever and the Taylor one is terrible (although not as bad as the lead single ME(H)!!)

'Hunting High and Low' is the first of my votes to drop out. I only heard it for the first time last year, when checking out the accompanying album in full and it's quickly rising in my affections.
Pity Ms Dynamite is out already (although I didn't really expect it to progress) but at least it beat the DIRE You Need To Calm Down.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, a lot more people voted for Charmless Man than on On Your Own. I'm intrigued whether that's mostly because people have only heard Charmless Man, or mostly because people know both and genuinely prefer Charmless Man. For me they should clearly be the other way round, but Blur were less mainstream come the back end of the 90s so I suspect On Your Own is less well known.

I'm clearly one of the few who would put that Taylor song in my top 10 of favourite Taylor songs!

52. Madcon - Beggin' 150pts

Writers - Bob Gaudio, Peggy Farina

Top points - Cow Cow 25, Ansel 21, Brer 17

The original version of Beggin' by The Four Seasons was a top 20 single in the US in 1967. It wasn't a hit in the UK until 2007 in remixed form. Later the same year came this cover by the Norwegian duo, Madcon. It's still their only top 40 hit. It wins a tie-break over Hunting High And Low by 13 votes to 11.

From 2005, this double A side single was the first of four top 10 hits for the London band. I didn't remember 'So Here We Are' myself but I liked it enough after playing it last week to give it five points.

I guess Bloc Party did well to reach the semis. So Here We Are is a great song within a soaring soundscape, even if I prefer Banquet from the same album.

Blur's second song in this semi-final also goes out early. Charmless Man was the fourth track and fourth single from their fourth album, The Great Escape.

The Foo Fighters' debut single in 1995 reached number 5 but they had to wait another seven years before this song gave them another top 5 hit. It won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.

'Beggin'' is the first of my votes to drop out aw. That is my favourite version of that song.

edit: noooo at 'All My Life' doing this badly as well, that is a classic!! :'(

Hunting High and Low is far too low :(

Within context of the site demographics it has probably done quite well but still.

This was a hit in 2018. The original version by Ivan Gough and Feenixpawl featuring Georgi Kay goes back to 2012 and it's also using the hook from a 1999 song called L'amour Toujours.
