Posted January 30, 20232 yr It's all systems go now that a couple of months have passed since Vicious Pink's decisive win in the inaugural edition of The Best Song Contest in the World... Ever! For the follow up edition I have chosen a theme that sits closer to the 90s this time. That is... Electronica! *.* "Electronica is an umbrella term that encompasses a broad group of electronic-based styles such as techno, house, ambient, drum and bass, jungle, and industrial dance, among others. It has been used to describe the rise of electronic music styles intended not just for dancing but also concentrated listening." Wikipedia lists the following artists as examples of those who would be classified under this term: The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, Moby, Underworld, Faithless, Björk, Goldfrapp, Autechre and Aphex Twin, amongst others. So essentially a lot of great music. Hopefully this should be a very high quality edition! As per the rules of contest #1 please avoid any U.K. top 10 hits. Mods will use their discretion for any other top 40 songs so vetoes may still be on the cards if an entry is deemed too well-remembered. This is of course the 20th Century Retro forum so please keep that in mind when selecting an entry! The Best Song Contest in the World... Ever! is an anonymous song contest so do not discuss the identity of your entry until they are revealed by myself in the results thread. Please try and avoid songs already sent to previous song contests where possible. Here are some archives to check through, albeit some more up to date than others: - Best Song Contest In The World... Ever! - BJSC - Club Bizarre - Nuggets - PFSC - Unknown Pleasures Please PM your entry to me with the following pieces of information: Artist: Title: Song link: I will inform participants as soon as I can if there are any artist clashes. Confirmed participants: - Jade - King Rollo - dandy* - Jester - JulianT - jimwatts - awardinary - Bjork - Popchartfreak - Dobbo - Ansel - Colm - Addy! - lewistgreen - Chez Wombat - Dan - Brer - Suedehead2 - AH Gold (19)
January 30, 20232 yr Ooh this should be a good theme! I'll try my best to be a bit more competitive this time after sending something I knew would bomb to the first edition :kink: I'm sure it shouldn't be too hard to find something I'll be happy to send to this one. Hype for Jade hosting :cheer:
January 30, 20232 yr Author No pressure to follow-up my biggest winner ever :kink: as soon as the mods gave me the green light for this theme I went hunting for the goods and am really happy and excited by my selection, won't be re-confirming this time.
January 30, 20232 yr As I'm a mod now, this is the first time I've been able to choose a song before a themed contest is announced so I've confirmed something nice and early.
January 31, 20232 yr As ever I am torn between entering something that very few have heard before and entering something that will do well but is known by many.
January 31, 20232 yr omg I almost missed this...needless to say, this is right up my alley so I'm truly excited for it!!!
February 1, 20232 yr oh and also I'm curious...what did inspire you for this theme? I just remembered you sent Yellow Magic Orchestra in CB and they're kinda there with Kraftwerk as early synth-electronica pioneers!!!
February 1, 20232 yr Author Up to a round 10 entries and thankfully no artist clashes so far. oh and also I'm curious...what did inspire you for this theme? I just remembered you sent Yellow Magic Orchestra in CB and they're kinda there with Kraftwerk as early synth-electronica pioneers!!! I found this poll from 2 years ago and it stood out as one of the options that was most up my street. ^_^ I also thought it'd be wise to move towards a theme more associated with the 90s after an 80s contest last time.
February 2, 20232 yr Author VETO Orbital - 'The Box' yJnve05CnNE (deemed too well known; U.K. #11 hit) ~~~ A more modern update of an older song was also vetoed, due to not being in the spirit of the contest, but I'll keep the identity of that one hidden in case the sender reconfirms with the original.
February 2, 20232 yr Apologies to whoever we have vetoed! Just to give an idea for anyone else yet to confirm, we're trying not to be too harsh but are sticking to the principles set out last time around: It doesn’t have to be something that is completely unknown. A lot of forum members won’t have been alive first time around so we’re really just looking for tracks that aren’t really well known these days. Less well remembered top 40 singles are fine if you’re struggling. Or album tracks/flop singles from bigger artists would also be fine. ps The Box is an absolutely fantastic song so good taste whoever it was... we very much encourage you to listen to the clip above if it turns out you don't know it
February 2, 20232 yr I don't know that song (I feel like we're being a bit stricter with the veto this time if that's being thrown out compared to the two elephants in the room in the first contest!) but I'll take the opportunity to hear a new (to me) Orbital song anyway and it is indeed great :music:

They fall into the allowable with an album track / lesser know flop kinda single category It's difficult to get the balance right at the moment around vetoes... happy to hear comments though as the first few contests always help form the correct balance
February 2, 20232 yr The Box is possibly the greatest piece of electronic music ever made [/Hyperbole]
February 2, 20232 yr Author I'd never heard 'The Box' either (a blind spot as I do know a decent handful of Orbital songs) but I don't trust my own judgement on these things now after 'Hayling'-gate in Club Bizarre :kink: But yeah, a great discovery anyway :music: and I'm generally loving the sound of what has been submitted so far, you guys didn't come to play *.*
February 2, 20232 yr it's one of Orbital's signature songs so I understand the veto int he previous contest there were big names like A-ha or Depeche Mode but with an album track and hardly-known single
February 2, 20232 yr Hopefully the artist I just confirmed isn't taken (I wouldn't be surprised if it is) since I waited so long to confirm!!!
February 3, 20232 yr it's one of Orbital's signature songs so I understand the veto int he previous contest there were big names like A-ha or Depeche Mode but with an album track and hardly-known single The elephants in the room I was referring to were A Flock Of Seagulls and Alphaville, not the big name artists with lesser known songs. (and I'm more saying that those two probably should have been vetoed rather than that Orbital shouldn't have! not making a fuss about it, just noticing a slightly different standard x) Hopefully the artist I just confirmed isn't taken (I wouldn't be surprised if it is) since I waited so long to confirm!!! We are still less than halfway through the confirmation period! I haven't even started looking yet (probably should do soon after what happened with my mega last minute Club Bizarre entry oop)
