For what I understand many people on Spotify have this autoplay option,

so when you play an album or a playlist that you chose, once it's finished, Spotify automatically keeps playing music

and that was fine cos it was random

but some label took advantage of it and were paying Spotify so that the automatic song was their song and always that

resulting in crazy lots of plays out of the blue for certain songs, like Nonsense the other week

that's happened for a long long time on Youtube though

Hate auto-play with a passion, always have it switched off. Had no idea it could be capitalised on as it is supposed to be "tuned to your taste" meaning it should be specific for the individual

I guess we'll see what happens with Pink later in the week.

Like someone said, they should remove NNGDA from the playlists and move onto Trustfall which is actually a great song and could click well with people beyond her fanbase.

Same! I always switched it off too, but I never thought it was a payola thing and also assumed it was specifically for you etc..

I was watching a video on YT yesterday and Tom Odell - Another Love started playing... as an advert... lol (Literally a "Skip this in...") I had to get my pizza out the oven before it burnt so it ended up playing for a bit... but I wonder if that has any effect too? Even if it's an advert? (Put I guess that is what "Payola" is lol)

I believe it was until very recently which is why it's now a 'controversy'!

I have auto-play turned off too, but I guess most people just don't bother digging into the settings to do so lol ~

I dunno about everyone else, but I had auto-play turned back on for me a couple months ago without warning which is probably contributing to this.

(I still don't want to assume without proof that this is deliberate rather than just a broken quirk in an algorithm. Hanlon's razor and whatnot).

I normally keep auto-play on. I find that on occasion it can lead to a decent new discovery and if i'm not in the mood for it I can put on a personally curated playlist. But I thought the whole point was it was tuned to your own personal tastes, didn't know there was any payola involved. That makes me consider switching it off.

I'm the same. From my understanding the auto play feature will play music similar to whatever playlist you were listening to or album. I've discovered new music that way a few times. Although my playlists are usually quite extensive that the auto-play feature doesn't kick in very often.

The fact "Trustfall" is #149 on Apple Music leads me to believe it's more than just spotify auto-play and it might just be starting to do well on it's own merit (or maybe tiktok is involved)?

I think P!nk's is legitimate success.

It's currently #13 on YouTube trending music. Which is really good for a legacy artist with a song that's over one week old.

Really can't wait to see this become a huge hit for her. I think the signs are pointing towards it being a huge top 10/15 hit.

Lady Gaga got a top 10 hit in the US that way with Dope many years ago. But I don't think they count advert views in the charts since then and I don't think they ever did here, so I think it shouldn't have an effect.

but automatic play on Youtube is huge and that counts, that's not the same as an ad

I think someone posted an example a few weeks ago, some Travis Scott song was getting 100,000 views a day from automatic plays every day for weeks

then it got removed and in 1 day it went from 100,000 to 10,000.

Just tested a bit with autoplay on Spotify and for me it plays me songs from related artists that I like or unknown in the same style

like I played SZA-Nobody Knows Me and then automatically played Lana-There's a Tunel and then the Taylor/Phoebe duet, so not complaining

it's not that the algorithm played Drake :D

I don't know who this is addressed to or what point it's trying to make.

But yes. Auto-play is something millions of people see on Youtube every day. And it counts for the charts.

The Lady Gaga and apparently Tom Odell songs are/were being played as adverts. That is exceptional and not something you see every day. And that doesn't count for the charts (anymore) I believe.

Yeah especially back when Youtube was popular auto-play actually had an effect on the charts. For example, Don't Let Me Down by The Chainsmokers got a surge in Youtube streams after Closer became popular because it was such a common song to be auto-played afterwards. It seems hardly anybody uses Youtube anymore though compared to in the past. Seems like none of the recent big hits have made it anywhere near 1 billion streams for example.

Dope got so high due to an unofficial live video on YT, not to ads. Then they changed the rules that only official videos count.
