Toy Story 5, a new feature film as part of the beloved animated franchise, is in development.

The announcement of the upcoming fifth installment in the beloved Pixar series was made by Disney CEO Bob Iger during the company's Q1 earnings call. Along with the news of a new Toy Story, other animated franchises will also be receiving new entries with Frozen 3 and a new Zootopia film also being announced during the call. “Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy Story, Frozen, and Zootopia," said Iger during the earnings call. "We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.”

One sequel too many?? Personally I think there shouldn't be a fifth film as the fourth one had sewn everything up with Woody leaving the rest of the gang.

Didn’t bother watching the 4th because the 3rd was the perfect ending, so no chance I’ll be watching a 5th.

I liked the 4th but it was not needed... like.. at all?

I'm not sure a 5th is wanted or needed either, but it's still gonna make big bucks so... *shrugs* I wish they'd leave it alone though.

Good. They're running scared and straight into mediocrity. I wish them nothing but failure.

4 was bad enough, but a 5th is necessary, I think, after that last effort.

I thought that three was perfect, with mini specials here and there to continue the series.

Yeah the fourth it was all right, nowhere near the three films. It will make mega bucks in the box office. We'll see in 2025, 2026, 2027, 2028 whenever it is released.

The first three really do showcase perfectly the stages of growing up in relation to both childhood and parenthood and it would've been up there with Lord of the Rings as a truly perfect body of work. The fourth I saw begrudgingly due to the positive reviews, but while it was perfectly good as a film, it didn't justify its existence. But the one thing I do get that people were defending at the time was that it was an end for Woody rather than Andy like the original films were. It was nowhere near as poignant, but I could just about accept it did a bit more than expected for what was otherwise a pointless cash-grab sequel.

This though, no. There is nothing you can tell me to convince me that this isn't just a soulless cash grab through and through. There is no story left to tell, part of me isn't surprised as Woody's adventures with childless toys did leave it open for some kind of continuation, but that's a TV miniseries idea at best. It's a real shame they're diminishing such a cultural milestone for animated films by just looking for more money. It really shows the absolute cold cynicism and dearth of original ideas Disney have at the minute, adding to them remaking half their back catalogue completely unnecessarily. I really hope it underperforms just to show them that original ideas are needed, but I'm not holding my breath :/ Won't see it unless the reviews are absolutely glowing.

They tried additional ideas and they bombed in 2022!

Bad year for Disney, massive loss of subscribers, announcing three sequels to exisiting franchises is a sure fire way to keep investors happy.

I'm also not a fan of a Toy Story 5 sequel.. I thought 3 was a perfect ending and 4 was good, it didn't add any value.

Well a lot of movies they released last year were remakes or based on existing IPs too! (Lightyear, Pinocchio, Disenchanted), there were only really two original animated films - Turning Red and Strange World, the latter definitely bombed but not surprising given how awfully it was marketed and apparently was a weak film anyway and the former was at least a critical hit and only received a limited release. Plus Encanto's success rolled over into this year. I refuse to believe they have no great original ideas that can be a success.

Given how bad 4 was, the 5th might take the sour taste out our mouths.

The way I see it is we have the three canonical, proper movies, and the rest are just cash-ins that you can ignore. It's like Britney post My Prerogative, or Coldpop post DAAOHF.

Pretty much exactly this - it was predictable they'd fall back on something like this after such a big streaming loss. And lest we forget, this was announced almost concurrently with a big loss of jobs. Perhaps in part to cover negative press from that.

The safety of these announcements leaves such a bad taste, there is no creative vision behind any of this. Just a continual desire to dominate pop culture, soullessly, forever. Of course I'll ignore it but the dominance of Disney in film generally is so bad for the medium.

I'm not sure it even works for families, aren't kids in the age range of these films too young to have seen the originals with any sort of nostalgia? Perhaps for Zootopia and Frozen - but even then Frozen 2 had a tiny bit of a cultural impact compared to the first one. At least one of these has to be a box office bomb and I will look forward to it.

I'm going against the grain here but I'm not against the idea of Toy Story 5!

The announcements of Toy Story 2, 3 and 4 all came with a certain amount of trepidation as to whether they'd be any good or if they'd run the risk of spoiling the legacy of the previous movie(s), but then they turned out excellently (at least, in my opinion). Including Toy Story 4, which for me was a very pleasant surprise... to me it proved that there more than enough life left with these characters, despite them no longer being Andy's toys. So at least at this early stage I feel like trusting those who'll be involved in Toy Story 5, and having faith that they're going into this because they've landed on another great story to tell. If that eventually turns out to not be the case, I think for me it's going to be more of an "oh well" situation rather than getting worked up about it - because I don't believe that one bad Toy Story film would undo the previous 4.

I’m so excited I love all the Toy Story films! I kind of agree the first 3 are the perfect trilogy, but I thought 4 was still a decent film so I have faith 5 will still be good. I just love the characters 😍

As Jay said, we have the first three, which are canon. Anything else is just a bit of fun, and you can ignore rhem if they're not up to scratch.
