Today marks 25 years since the video for 'Frozen' premiered on MTV. Lead single from 'Ray of Light', 'Frozen' is a string-laden, electronica ballad that demonstrated Madonna's new vocal talents. It received huge critical acclaim and became a massive hit across the world, reaching the Top 2 in the likes of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK and US. For the UK, 'Frozen' earned Madonna her highest first week sales of nearly 197k and places among her best selling singles today. Madonna collaborated with British video director Chris Cunningham for the music video and features Madonna as a witch-like persona that shapeshifts into animals. It won Best Special Effects in a Video at the 1998 VMAs.

My introduction to Madonna. 25 years!! :drama: I refuse to believe it!
cant see this not making the tour

At the time I was thrilled that Madonna was back in the good books. No.1 single, critically-acclaimed album, performance on the National Lottery. This was stuff we Madonna fans hadn't had for a long time.

I remember I had a Yamaha keyboard and learnt to play it and put some really good backing to it with all the weird stuff my expensive board could do.

But... if I'm truly honest... It's not a song I absolutely love as much as seemingly everyone else. It is beautiful, but it's very long and it's a ballad (which have never fared well in my mind). I have been know to skip it!!

(*waits for the flogging*)

It's truly a fantastic song. I really love the video itself.
Like Liam I am the same age as 'Frozen' but it still feels like way too long ago  it's my favourite Madonna song anyway  I love the suitably icy sound and standout visuals.

This has only got better with age for me and I can confidently say its in my Top 10 Madonna singles, possibly Top 5. Haunting, eerie, spine-tingling, enchanting, devastating... it really is a masterpiece and I think captures the relationship of Madonna and William Orbit so well as everything - the vocals, the production, the lyrics - is pitched perfectly. Orbit knows just the right moments to add in his little effects to get the most out of your emotions when you listen. The video is great too, I love the concept of it being set in a desert because of being desolate and "frozen" in time.

I feel like the National Lottery performance gave it a big boost in its first week sales. Radio airplay wasn't yet that strong (it climbed 72-57-21-17-11 in the lead up to its release and was #5 the week it charted) but this was a rare UK TV performance for Madonna - her first since 1995 TOTP I think. Obviously this is on top of momentum built from 'Evita' and the excitement of another reinvention.

The Madame X Tour performance of 'Frozen' has been uploaded to Madonna's YouTube channel:
