May 13, 20232 yr Would be nice if it wasn't bottom 5 at least so here's hoping she can pull it off! Fab that she finally hit the high note. That's promising at least.
May 13, 20232 yr i got goosebumps hearing the crowd sing along! while i was in the arena, i was talking to attendees from israel, germany, australia + spain who were all talking positively about the song + sang along when it came on. the overall feel was that it won’t win but should do decently. i know that’s absolutely no bearing on how it will do tonight but there’s a lot of good faith + the audience genuinely like the song. really glad they’ve amped up the backing vocals as she definitely needed it - not that i think her vocals are terrible but this kind of talky chorus would need a lift regardless of the vocalist. i’m hopeful we’ll get a decent placing - anything on the left hand side will be a win.
May 13, 20232 yr ^^ This, I never thought it would be a winner but hoped it would do well and continue to change the narrative and view on UK ESC. If UK singers and songwriters can enter and at least get a home hit single and help launch their career off of the back of ESC that can only be a major plus, if Mae manages it this year it’ll be two artists that have achieved a career post ESC without winning.
May 14, 20232 yr I liked the song, but where was the vocal backing, I felt like they forgot to turn her mic up. I saw this coming in low, not shocked at all.
May 14, 20232 yr Sam just looking like a major blip in our 5 year history - 24th, 26th, 26th, 2nd, 25th
May 14, 20232 yr I unfortunately wasn't enthusiastic about this song choice from the start, and didn't see the potential in it that many others did... but by no means did I think we would end up that low on the scoreboard either, so that's a real shame. Eek, we're back to square one. I feel sorry for Mae, but it is what it is - and hopefully it's still destined to do well in the UK singles chart next week, as a consolation.
May 14, 20232 yr Author Sam just looking like a major blip in our 5 year history - 24th, 26th, 26th, 2nd, 25th just like Germany with Michael Schulte really - if you want a cautionary tale. there's lots of factors, a pretty much inherent disadvantage of being a big 5 country if you have a song in the middle of the pack, bad sound issues probably most of all, a style of song that works in the chart, less so as a performance. But this does stand out from the other results because there was unquestionably a fanbase for it. There was highly positive fan reaction to this entry, it was in around about 9th-13th in most fan rankings, you could hear the noise for her in the arena and while there are songs that do bomb relative to those rankings, rarely as hard as this. Plus definitely lots of potential votes went to Israel or Norway just a few before her and both had much better performances on the night. but really I've had quite enough of people being nasty about it. It's not a good look to gloat. It also feels misogynistic, everyone loved James Newman even after he got 0 but Mae gets more than that, isn't even last on either metric and suddenly we get diatribes on how this was always overrated and deserved to fail.
May 14, 20232 yr Author And I will have to be positive about our next entry - we'll be in it to host again. 'Momentum' is a little bit of a fake concept when it comes to Eurovision, people aren't just gonna memory-hole our good result in 2022 by 2024. The heightened profile of it being in the UK and what looks like incoming chart success for a number of entries should keep the talent pool broad next time. keep the doom and gloom on hold until at least march thx
May 14, 20232 yr I feel like there was a more general issue with songs that go down a storm in the Euroclub not doing so well in the contest, like Austria and Poland to some extent as well as the UK. I think the lesson is that it needs to be a compelling performance and not just a bop in itself. As others have said, trying properly to do well doesn’t mean you’ll get it right every time.
May 14, 20232 yr I think you (the UK) need to do a proper national final next year. To be fair, we made some terrible choices when we did have a show for that, so not sure I trust us there either. It just didn’t translate well live in comparison to the other big pop songs on stage. It wasn’t bad, but just being ok isn’t enough. Really hope this becomes a hit still as that would keep other acts engaged with doing the show for next year. Last thing we need is go to go back to scraping the barrel for songs/acts.
May 14, 20232 yr Author Unfortunately national finals at this stage would not be entered by acts with the profile we want - even less wanted than failing at Eurovision is publicly trying and failing to go to Eurovision. Current contract is still working fine in terms of getting us artists worth a damn and should probably continue for another year or two I'd imagine.
May 14, 20232 yr Thankfully the press are being level headed and not the usual cry of let’s withdraw, it’s political etc., I think Mae has done wonders for the show by entering a song that is current, that radio stations took too immediately as it’s the type of music they play etc., - I really hope she can build a decent career off the back of it and we’re past ESC being a career kiss of death https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-65586989.amp
May 14, 20232 yr I think you (the UK) need to do a proper national final next year. Definitely not, the great British public chose acts such as Jemini, Michael Rice, Josh Dubovie etc., to represent us. Also we’d end up like the Irish National final - a few pub singers entering the contest as nobody of any caliber would be interested to compete and potentially lose.
May 14, 20232 yr Mae was spectacular in terms of her presence and all the stuff she did on TikTok. The BBC definitely did a bit of self sabotage with not giving her that oomph she needed with the instrumental during the live. But she tried hard and hasn’t been a sore loser like some of our previous entrants!
