Posted May 10, 20232 yr Who do you reckon will pull out or make a return for the 2024 contest? I can't think who would withdraw but maybe however unlikely Ireland now their dismal run stretches to just one final in nine contests. Monaco looks like they will return any year now once their new state owned television channel is established and EBU membership is sorted out. I think at least one of Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Montenegro will return.
May 10, 20232 yr Looking back at the quality that Bulgaria sent between 2016 and 2021 I still feel sad that they have chosen to withdraw.
May 10, 20232 yr I think North Macedonia will return, and perhaps Montenegro. I think Monaco might return too. I still hope Kazakhstan will debut in the next couple of years. Maybe if Erdogan is not the president anymore, Turkiye could return.
May 10, 20232 yr Author Maybe not for many years yet but with a Faroese representing Denmark this year, could this be a big step towards the Faroe Islands being an EBU member and debuting in Eurovision?
May 12, 20232 yr Yeah no one called this. One of the biggest outstanding ones. I wonder what they'd do, my initial thought is a similar strategy to San Marino but as unlike San Marino it's actually a real country (more people than Iceland) maybe there's plenty of Luxembourgish singers ready to go for it.
May 12, 20232 yr Interesting. Eurovision is so different to when they were last in... Small/micro-countries have a tendency to struggle (even Malta seem to underperform when they send great songs [poor Destiny ðŸ˜]). Interested to see how they do!
May 12, 20232 yr As for others, if the Turkish elections this weekend go well (as in, their second-rate Putin is deposed) they could be a surprise return. Possibly the next most likely even after N Mac and Montenegro who clearly want to return when they have the funds so will probably be in-out for the next few years. Flight risks following the semis... unlikely but I'll have some question marks over some of the Caucasus, not Armenia of course but the other two might consider getting out - I think I read that Latvia's still paid up otherwise I might call them too. The corruption around the Greek entry also has me slightly worried but still less than 5%.
May 12, 20232 yr Luka Kloser or Bolshiee for Luxembourg please!!! :w00t: :w00t:Â PF9bWV7xskw sP3ungxnE5M
May 12, 20232 yr Very happy that Luxembourg is back but I'm anxious to see how long it will be for. They don't strike me as a country which would persevere through a bad start so they will need to hit the ground running, which is going to be tough after a 30 year absence. The good news is that if they do want to throw money at it, they have all the money in the world to do that with, and they have a noticeable population advantage over reasonably successful countries like Iceland and Malta. Leaving aside their own chances, their return has fairly significant televote implications for numerous countries (most notably Portugal, who could do with the help). In terms of leavers I am definitely worried for Azerbaijan at this point unless Turkey make a comeback next year. No juries in the semis and Turkey, Russia and Belarus absent is going to force them to either raise the quality back up or give up.
May 12, 20232 yr ^^ I thought the same when I saw Luxembourg’s announcement - I feel like they will only be interested if they are securing Top 10 places, if they return next year and don’t qualify or finish 22nd I feel like they would disappear again, also the contest is a lot different from when they last took part.
May 17, 20232 yr Author Maybe not for many years yet but with a Faroese representing Denmark this year, could this be a big step towards the Faroe Islands being an EBU member and debuting in Eurovision?  I highly doubt Looks like it's actually happening!   https://eurovoix.com/2023/05/17/faroe-islan...ion-membership/
May 18, 20232 yr I'd put Faroe Islands in the same camp as 'will they or won't they but probably won't due to small broadcaster funds' as Liechtenstein, Monaco or Andorra. Except with added incentive to make the constituent parts of the UK clamour for their own entry too. Â So unlikely. Mainstream Eurovision has adhered fairly strictly to the UN definition of country due to the way EBU membership is set up. I really doubt they'd get full member status (unless they get in under the proviso that they can take part... as long as Denmark is NOT taking part), associate member is perhaps possible but that doesn't get you access to Eurovision unless you specifically get invited.
