In short, Taylor Swift debuted 17 years ago - but that first album era was seemingly restricted to the US and Canada. Her international breakthrough came with the release of Love Story and her second album Fearless, in 2009 (14 years ago).

Taylor Swift (Current age: 33 years, 5 months)

Debut single release: 'Tim McGraw' - 16 years and 11 months ago [19th June 2006] (Age at the time: 16 years, 6 months)

Debut album release: 'Taylor Swift' - 16 years and 7 months ago [24th October 2006] (Age at the time: 16 years, 10 months)

Her UK debuts:

First single to chart: 'Love Story' - 14 years and 3 months ago [22nd February 2009] (Age at the time: 19 years, 2 months)

First album to chart: 'Fearless' - 14 years and 2 months ago [15th March 2009] (Age at the time: 19 years, 3 months)

Kylie Minogue (Current age: She will be 55 in five days time)

Debut single release: 'Locomotion' - 35 years and 10 months ago [13th July 1987] (Age at the time: 19 years, 1 month)

Debut album release: 'Kylie' - 34 years and 10 months ago [4th July 1988] (Age at the time: 20 years, 1 month)

Her UK debuts:

First single to chart: 'I Should Be So Lucky' - 35 years and 4 months ago [10th January 1988] (Age at the time: 19 years, 7 months)

First album to chart: 'Kylie' - 34 years and 10 months ago [10th July 1988] (Age at the time: 20 years, 1 month)

It's anyone's guess what the charts and music consumption will be look like in 20+ years from now, and whether Taylor will still be able to score big #1s or Top 10 singles into her 50s - or if the threshold will be "maybe Top 40 is possible", just like it is for Kylie. I think it's excellent and exciting that Kylie is possibly able to get a new Top 40 single, 35 years into her career! Far from pathetic. :o

Hi my hun

Agree 100% with everything you said, I am nodding like a nodding dog, it is astonishing to me that Kylie is still managing number 1 albums with decent sales being 35/36 years into her career.

Why are you all comparing artists who debuted 20 years apart from each other? Is it not a bit of a moot point?

At their peaks Taylor has definitely had far more impact on a global scale than Kylie has, but that's largely down to how everything is so accessible now. This industry is ever changing and it's getting more and more reductive making these kinds of comparisons as there is simply no fair way to compare them on an equal scale.

It's just bizarre to me. Kylie being able to achieve another top 40 hit in her illustrious 35-year career (without needing a feature) is crazy good! The closest comparison you're going to get for Kylie (if you must) is how Cher managed to get a HUGE era with 'Believe' coming out nearly 35 years into her career. It's unprecedented and rare. But just celebrate the achievements without having the need to compare to someone else who is completely irrelevant to that other person? It makes no sense to me when the other person you're comparing to isn't even 35 years old, let alone have a career that long

Even with Cher you can't fairly compare coz Kylie was consistently successful up until this point - I don't know when Cher's last era was before the era that gave us 'Believe' - but like I said, it got easier for artists to maintain their careers and release albums than it was in the 90's when labels had a bigger influence.

Hi my hun

I agree with you as well. I am not sure why people are trying to compare Kylie with Taylor. You really cant compare someone who is still going strong and being successful 35 years into her career with someone who is not. It feels like some Taylor fans want to try and drag other female artists down when they can all live in the same world and all be successful. Not many artists manage a 35 year career, while still getting number 1 albums.

definitely Kylie being 20-ish in the mids is like the 100% opposite of pathetic.

I'm seeing that it's the other way around, hun x

People in this thread were only pointing out that Taylor debuted nearly 20 years ago (which is true - not for UK impact though, as Jay has perfectly explained) before some people were getting defensive and started bringing Kylie's age into it as some sort of bragging right.

Celebrate her getting a UK top 40 hit as a 54 year old because that SHOULD be celebrated in this day and age. But leave Taylor out of it and keep your little digs to yourself?

Cher had the 3rd biggest selling single of 1991, a number one in 1995 with Love Can Build A Bridge, a no.7 hit with One By One in 1996, and was one of the biggest selling female act of the 90s in the UK.

Hi my hun

Exactly, someone brought Taylor into the conversation when this had nothing to do with her. The conversation was about Kylie doing well... that is probably why people started to mention Kylies age and the difference between where they are at in their career.

Believe was a huge worldwide phenomenon, not just a UK hit. I don't think we cannot consider PP such a thing, yet at least.

I suppose it's just as well we're discussing it in context of the UK chart on a UK chart forum.

Remember to stream Padam Padam once, twice, ten times! Download it twice on iTunes! Also do the same with Loreen's Tattoo. Thank you for listening.

Hi my hun

I am streaming Padam Padam 10 times a day at least (I think that is the limit?) And watching you tube vids. I have bought my digitals as well. Hopefully more come out for us.

I’m seeing a lot of love for Padam Padam across my socials. I sent it to some of my friends who wouldn’t necessarily know Kylie was dropping new music and they approved as well. I think I prefer Say Something as a song on its own right but Padam Padam is definitely more of a “hit”.

I can see it being quite the hit for her it’s short and snappy and the music videos pretty strong too. She’s always maintained a strong and loyal fanbase here in the UK but I think DISCO really won her over with a newer audience as well keeping her core fanbase very happy so I’m not surprised at this doing so well.

I am too, and I've seen countless memes since it was released. But then given the people I do follow on my socials, I hadn't really read that much into it in terms of reaching out into the general public.

Looking at the post about Kylie on PJ

she did 1.4K sales yesterday, which is a lot all things considered

and is on 6.3K for the week already
